I also extend my thanks to my outside readers for their comments and critiques of this project throughout its development. v ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS KARL KRAUS AND THE JEWISH QUESTION: ASSIMILATION, LANGUAGE, AND PERSECUTION IN VIENNA, 1874-1936 by Chad Russell Fulwider Florida International University, 2000 Miami, Florida Professor Mitchell Hart, Major Professor This study examines the Viennese satirist Karl Kraus and his responses to the "Jewish Question" and anti- Semitism. Through a comprehensive analysis of his major works, this project reveals Kraus's underlying views on Jewish identity and his ideas for resolving the "Jewish Question." Kraus attacked acculturated German-speaking Jews for "failing" to assimilate into society. In his mind, the bourgeois Jewish intellectuals had retreated into a "transparent ghetto" of aesthetic values, literary expression, and capitalist-materialism, represented by the "Jewish" press. For Kraus, anti-Semitism persisted because the Jews maintained their status as "Jews," and therefore could not assimilate into Viennese society. "Lord, forgive them, for they know what they do!" 2 The Viennese satirist Karl Kraus once declared that according to the 1911 census, "Vienna had 2,030,834 inhabitants, that is 2,030,833 souls and myself."3 This bold statement demonstrates Kraus's self-imposed detachment from Viennese society. Convinced of his own uniqueness and unwilling to be labeled or categorized, Kraus launched his own personal campaign to attack all that he perceived to be wrong in Viennese society. Kraus's campaign involved attacking acculturated, westernized German-speaking Jews through his particular brand of bitter and piercing satire. From Die Fackel, 315-316, January 26, 1911, 13. 1 climate of Vienna. Kraus believed that "corrupt" and "liberal" Jews were dragging Austrian and German culture into a precipitous state of decline. To measure this decline, Kraus brought the yardstick of language to bear against his opponents. By quoting directly from his counterparts and then explaining their underlying paradoxes or hypocrisies, Kraus sought to revolutionize language - and by extension, to rescue the Austria he loved - by teaching the Viennese population to read with careful scrutiny. Though ultimately doomed to failure, Kraus devoted his life to a one-man crusade to revive the "life- less" body of the German language.4 Born in Jiein, Bohemia in 1874, the young Kraus and his family moved in 1877 to Vienna. He lived there until his death in 1936. Kraus's father, a devout Jew, was the owner of a prosperous paper manufacturing company that provided a comfortable way of life for his family. Kraus entered the University of Vienna in 1892, where he studied law, philosophy, and German literature. He left, however, in 1898 before completing a degree. Kraus, Half-Truths and One and a Half Truths, 101. 2 university, Kraus wrote book reviews and satirical sketches, some of which were published in periodicals and newspapers in both Germany and Austria.5 Kraus's first major satirical work was Die demolirte Literatur, which appeared origianlly in the Wiener Rundschau and subsequently as a pamphlet in 1896. The piece, which lampooned the "Jung Wien" circle of intellectuals and authors in Vienna, marked Kraus as a distinguished social critic. Three years later, Kraus founded Die Fackel (The Torch), a satirical journal that he published from 1899 to 1936. Although Kraus originally accepted submissions from other authors, from 1911 onward he wrote and published Die Fackel single-handedly. Kraus once commented, "I no longer have collaborators. I used to be envious of them. They repelled those readers whom I want to lose myself. "6 Again, this demonstrates Kraus's sense of isolation from the Viennese public and his mission Kraus published articles in Die Gesellschaft (Leipzig), Magazin fir Literatur (Berlin), Neue literarische B1ltter (Bremen), and the Viennese Liebelei, Die Wage, Wiener Literatur-Zeitung, Wiener Rundschau, and Die Neue Freie Presse. Out of the 30,000 pages of Die Fackel, Kraus is responsible for writing just over 25,000. 3 to attack those elements he saw as detrimental. We were in school together, of course—we both did our Masters in Yiddish. I think you texted me something that was like, ‘Hey Jess, the Winchevsky Centre has a few boxes of Yiddish books that they don’t know what to do with, do you wanna help me go through them,” and I was thinking, okay, y’know, what kind of books are we talking here, but I don’t think anyone really knew…We just sort of showed up, and found that massive closet of all the books.” The Morris Winchevsky Centre is a white brick building from the 1950s. Jess Pollock: “I think—they had the name written in Yiddish on the front right? It was quite fitting for what we were doing, really.” It’s on Cranbrooke Avenue, near the intersection of Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue in midtown Toronto. Around the corner, there’s a small synagogue that doubles as a beys midresh, a house of Jewish study. On another corner, a yeshiva for boys, and not far away, one for girls. It’s one of the most densely Orthodox Jewish neighbourhoods in Toronto today, the heart of a thriving Haredi community. So it’s somewhat of an odd place to find the headquarters of an ardently secular leftist Jewish organization. But once, before the Haredim settled there, the Winchevsky Centre was just one of several secular Jewish institutions in the area, each housed in mid-century modern buildings that were new when they were built, contracted specially for these organizations.

The indispensable source of information on Harden is the magazine he edited from 1892 until 1922. The one hundred and eighteen volumes of the Zukunft contain the bulk of his essays, commentaries, and trial records, as well as many private letters to and from him. The Zukunft was the inspiration or the source for Harden's principal pamphlets and books, namely Kampfge­ nosse Sudermann (Berlin, 1903); KopJe (4 vols., Berlin, 1911-1924); Krieg und Friede (2 vols., Berlin, 1918); and Von Versailles nach Versailles (Hellerau, 1927). On the other hand, however, I wonder if a turning point in world history, upon careful consideration, is not really the moment for everyone to look inward. Thomas Mann, Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man1 Abstract: This article revisits the world-views of Stefan Zweig and Klaus Mann by analyzing the diverse ways in which they shaped their literary careers as autobiographers. Particular focus is given to the crises they experienced while composing their respective autobiographical narratives, both published in 1942. Our re-evaluation of their complex discussions on literature and art reveals two distinctive approaches to the relationship between aesthetics and politics, as well as two alternative concepts of authorial autonomy within society. Simulta- neously, we argue that in spite of their different approaches to political involve- ment, both authors shared a basic understanding of art as an enclave of huma- nistic existence at a time of oppressive political circumstances. However, their attitudes toward the autonomy of the artist under fascism differed greatly. This is demonstrated mainly through their contrasting portrayals of Richard Strauss, who appears in both autobiographies as an emblematic genius composer. Shattering Fragility: Illness, Suicide, and Refusal in Fin-De-Siècle Viennese Literature Abstract How fragile is the femme fragile and what does it mean to shatter her fragility? Can there be resistance or even strength in fragility, which would make it, in turn, capable of shattering? I propose that the fragility embodied by young women in fin-de-siècle Vienna harbored an intentionality that signaled refusal. A confluence of factors, including psychoanalysis and hysteria, created spaces for the fragile to find a voice. These bourgeois women occupied a liminal zone between increased access to opportunities, both educational and political, and traditional gender expectations in the home. Although in the late nineteenth century the femme fragile arose as a literary and artistic type who embodied a wan, ethereal beauty marked by delicacy and a passivity that made her more object than authoritative subject, there were signs that illness and suicide could be effectively employed to reject societal mores.

Taking her acceptance speech for the 2004 Nobel Prize for Literature as a starting point, my essay explores Jelinek's unique approach to her native language, which carries both the burden of historic guilt and the challenge of a distinguished, if tortured literary legacy. Furthermore, I examine the performative force of her language. Jelinek's "Dramas" do not unfold in action and dialogue, rather, they are embedded in the grammar itself.

(Hanco) Jürgens Abstract Every year the Rathenau Stiftung awards the Walther Rathenau-Preis to international politicians to spread Rathenau’s ideas of ‘democratic values, international understanding and tolerance’. This incorrect perception of Rathenau as a democrat and a liberal is likely to have originated from the historiography. Many historians have described Rathenau as ‘contradictory’, claiming that there was a clear and problematic distinction between Rathenau’s intellectual theories and ideas and his political and business career. Upon closer inspection, however, this interpretation of Rathenau’s persona seems to be fundamentally incorrect. This thesis reassesses Walther Rathenau’s legacy profoundly by defending the central argument: Walther Rathenau’s life and motivations can first and foremost be explained by his cultural pessimism and Prussian nationalism. The first part of the thesis discusses Rathenau’s intellectual ideas through an in-depth analysis of his intellectual work and the historiography on his work. Motivated by racial theory, Rathenau dreamed of a technocratic utopian German empire led by a carefully selected Prussian elite. He did not believe in the ‘power of a common Europe’, but in the power of a common German Europe. The second part of the thesis explicates how Rathenau’s career is not contradictory to, but actually very consistent with, his cultural pessimism and Prussian nationalism. Firstly, Rathenau saw the First World War as a chance to transform the economy and to make his Volksstaat a reality.
