Trends in intraspecifi c variation among certain aspects of pronotal and tarsal morphology within the family Naucoridae are reviewed, and linked to previously fl awed taxonomic decisions regarding species separation or generic assignments within this group, particularly in the subfamily Laccocorinae. In par- ticular, we review evidence that the shape of the posterolateral pronotal angles is linked to differing degrees of fore- and hindwing development across the family as a whole, and that members of the subfamily Laccocorinae exhibit intersexual variation in both fore tarsal segmentation and the number of claws on the foreleg. Misinterpretation of such character state variation has been utilized as an invalid basis for separation of putatively distinct species by many authors over the past 50 years. Based on this analysis, we propose the following taxonomic changes (valid names listed fi rst): Laccocoris staudingeri Montandon, 1897 = Laccocoris maai La Rivers, 1970, syn. nov. = Laccocoris lipogonia La Rivers, 1970, syn. nov.; Interocoris La Rivers, 1974, stat. nov. (currently subgenus of Heleocoris Stål, 1876) is raised to full generic status to contain Interocoris mexicanus (Usinger, 1935), comb. nov. (formerly held under Heleocoris (Interocoris) mexicanus Usin- ger, 1935); the following Neotropical species are transferred from Heleocoris to Ctenipocoris Montandon, 1897: Ctenipocoris brasiliensis (De Carlo, 1968), comb. -

ABSTRACT The state of taxonomy of the Mexican fauna of the family Naucoridae is summarized and is fairly complete as a result of recent research. Currently, 71 species from six genera and four subfamilies have been recorded from the country. Species richness is distributed in the subfamilies Cryphocricinae: Ambrysus Stål (53), Cataractocoris Usinger (3), Cryphocricos Signoret (2); Laccocorinae: Interocoris La Rivers (1); Limnocorinae: Limnocoris Stål (10); and Naucorinae: Pelocoris Stål (2). Recent works have focused on the fauna of the genus Ambrysus. Additionally, studies are required for the genera Cryphocricos and Pelocoris, while a taxonomic revision of the genus Limnocoris is close to completion. A key to the subfamilies and genera of Naucoridae from Mexico is provided. Key words: distribution, aquatic insects, Hemiptera, North America. Riqueza genérica y distribución de Elmidae (Insecta: Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) en el departamento del Valle del Cauca, Colombia Generic richness and distribution of Elmidae (Insecta: Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) in the Valle del Cauca Department of Colombia Marcela González-Córdoba, María del Carmen Zúñiga y Verónica Manzo Resumen Elmidae es una familia de coleópteros acuáticos frecuentes en corrientes de aguas limpias y de amplia utilización en estudios de bioindicación ambiental. Este trabajo se planteó con el fin de reconocer la riqueza de los ég neros de Elmidae en el departamento del Valle del Cauca y recopilar la información de distribución a partir de datos de colecciones biológicas. Se revisaron 3305 individuos (larvas y adultos), depositados principalmente en el Museo de Entomología de la Universidad del Valle que corresponden a colectas entre 1991 y 2014 y representan 116 localidades, 19 municipios y 63 corrientes hídricas, pertenecientes a las cuencas de los ríos Anchicayá, Cauca, Dagua y San Juan y las regiones naturales Andina y Pacífica. Se documentaron 16 ég neros: 11 de Elminae (Austrolimnius, Cylloepus, Heterelmis, Huleechius, Macrelmis, Microcylloepus, Neoelmis, Notelmis, Onychelmis, Xenelmis y Stenhelmoides, este último sin datos de colecciones locales) y cinco de Larainae (Disersus, Hexanchorus, Phanocerus, Pharceonus y Pseudodisersus), que se distribuyeron entre 110 y 2440 m s.n.m., pero con mayor riqueza genérica entre 1000 y 2000 m s.n.m. Heterelmis y Macrelmis fueron los géneros de mayor distribución y el río Guabas tuvo la mayor representatividad genérica. Se amplía el área de distribución para el Valle del Cauca de Austrolimnius, Huleechius, Notelmis y Xenelmis. Palabras clave. Insectos acuáticos. -

ABSTRACT. A taxonomic key for the genera of Elmidae (Coleoptera, Byrrhoidea) occurring in Goiás State, Brazil, including new records and distributional notes. Despite their great diversity and high abundance in Neotropical aquatic environments, the fauna of Elmidae remains practically unknown in some areas and even entire biomes in this region. In this work we bring, for the first time, faunistic data for the Elmidae of central Brazil. The aim of this work was to inventory the Elmidae fauna in central, southwestern and southeastern Goiás State, Brazil and to produce a taxonomic key, at genus level, for adults from the studied region. The taxonomic key presented herein offers means for the identification of all the 13 genera known to occur in Goiás, 11 of them being new records for the State. Moreover, the number of named species registered for Goiás increased from one to nine. KEYWORDS. Cerrado biome; Insecta; Neotropics; Riffle beetles. -

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA). -

A key to identify the known mature larvae of the South American genera of the family Elmidae is provided. The key includes seven genera presently assigned to the subfamily Larainae and 15 genera assigned to the subfamily Elminae. New distributional data for all genera and a checklist of described larvae are also included. The mature larva of Macrelmis saltensis Manzo is described and illustrated for the first time, and compared to other known larvae of the granigera species-group. Distributional notes for M. saltensis increase its known range to the north, this being the first citation of the species for Bolivia. Macrelmis isis (Hinton) is also cited for the first time for Bolivia. Keywords: Elmidae, larvae, identification key, Macrelmis, South America. Introduction useful references exist. Using abundance of common taxa and taxon richness of each sampled site, we examined the temporal variation of arthropods and related these changes with 12 environmental variables. Seasonal patterns of benthic arthropods were confirmed by uni- and multivariate techniques. Benthic abundance and taxon richness peaked on autumn-winter months, and declined abruptly on the month of peak discharge (summer season). Distinct taxonomic groups were dominant in each season influenced by discharge and seven chemical variables. Assemblage resistance to disturbance by spates was low. Rapid recovery of benthic arthropods after floods reflected high resilience of the system.
