Diane Mizerka, who coached the Lady Reds from 1968-80, was one of the pioneers of women’s athletics at Carthage. She came to Carthage in 1965 when women’s programs were barely in existence, and in the early years, coached nine sports. Mizerka later settled into coaching volleyball, basketball and softball. She compiled a 116-74 record in 13 seasons as wom- en’s basketball coach. Her .611 winning percentage is the highest of all Carthage women’s basketball coaches, and she remains the only coach in the program to win more than 100 games. In volleyball, she was 190-204-24 in eight seasons, and in softball, she compiled a 57-39 mark in 12 season. Mizerka left the coaching ranks in 1982 to become Carthage’s first and only director of women’s athletics. She retired from that position in June 1985 and was inducted into the Carthage Athletic Hall of Fame later that year.

From 1971 to 1982, the Lady Reds played in the Wisconsin Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WWIAC). The 15-school league was divided into two divisions, one for schools with enrollments greater than 3,000 students and the other for schools under 3,000 students. Carthage played in the WWIAC Small-School, South Division, along with Car- roll College, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Small-School North Division was composed of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, the University of Wisconsin-Stout and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The Large-School Division consisted of Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside and St. Norbert College joined the conference in the late 1970s. Each division had a post-season tournament, with the four winners advancing to Midwest Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) regional championship. Carthage made a regional appearance in the 1979-80 season.

From 1983 to 1986, Carthage women’s athletics were affiliated with the Chicago Metro Conference, along with Carroll University (Wis.), Elmhurst College, George Williams College, , and Wheaton College (Ill.). The short-lived league was dissolved prior to the 1986-87 season when the CCIW established championships for women’s athletics.
