  • Berlinale 2008
Berlinale 2008 By Ron Holloway Spring 2008 Issue of KINEMA 58th BERLINALE 2008 Box Office Bonanza Will it ever end? During his seven years as Berlinale director, Dieter Kosslick’s festival tenure is annually boosted by success at the box office. Following the close of the 58th Berlin International Film Festival (7-17 February 2008), bonanza statistics were promptly released to the press. The 58th Berlinale recorded an overall audience of 430,000, of which some 230,000 purchased tickets, thus exceeding last year’s record by more than 6,000. The number of visiting film professionals (exhibitors, sales agents, industry representatives) increased to 20,000 from 125 countries, topping last year’s total of 19,155. The number of accredited journalists rose to 4,105. The sum of public screenings also rose to 1,256, compared with 934 screenings in 2007. Only the number of films participating in this year’s official programs dipped in comparison tolast year - down from 396 to 383 - but even this adjustment apparently made some Berlinale entries all the more attractive. The buzz at the Berlinale? Of particular interest were the ”EFM Industry Debates” held in the Marriott Hotel for three days in the middle of the festival. A hundred participants registered for the panel discussions on the challenges and opportunities of ”Digital Film Distribution” in the not too distant future. Another press headliner was a calculation on the ”monetary worth” of this year’s Berlinale, reckoned at circa €17.2m, or around US$ 26m. The sum includes the input by the German government (country, state, city), estimated at € 6.2m, or approximately US$ 9.3m.

  • The Representation of Islamic Teachings in Non-Islamic Film
e-Prosiding Persidangan Antarabangsa Sains Sosial dan Kemanusiaan 2018 PASAK3 2018 23-24 April 2018 . Kolej Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Selangor . eISBN: 978-967-2122-47-0 ISLAM AS A WAY OF LIFE: THE REPRESENTATION OF ISLAMIC TEACHINGS IN NON-ISLAMIC FILM Fauziah Hassan (Ph.D) Umi Khairiyah Syafiqah Mohd Sabli Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia ABSTRACT Islam provides specific guidelines for all people to follow in their daily lives as Islam guides in several aspects such as social, economics, politics, moral and spiritual. By saying that, it shows that Islam caters for all the fields of human existence. A study on the representation of Islam in the media is not new. Many remember that it starts with the historic event of September 11, 2001 in which Islam has been represented as negative in the eyes of others. Apart from that, Islam images have been represented through drama, films, newspapers and other media channels in which have also contributed to the new image of Islam and Muslims. Interestingly, this study would like to draw special attention on how far non-Islamic film applied/portrayed Islamic teachings in the film. Therefore, a film Bisik Pada Langit (BPL) has been used as a sample for this study. The storyline of BPL will be analysed through quantitative content analysis method. The frequency of representation of Islamic teachings will be examined through quantitative content analysis. The results showed that, the representation of Islamic teachings in BPL, has been explained through the depiction of performing prayers, reading Quran, covering aurah and kindness towards parents. Through this discovery, it proved that non-Islamic film has played a role as a medium to enlighten Islamic images and teachings for the benefit of the society.
