Groundhog Day is on February 2nd and the idea behind it comes from an ancient Christian celebration known as Candlemas Day, which marked the midpoint be- tween the winter solstice and the spring equinox. On Candlemas Day, clergy would bless candles needed for winter and distribute them to the people. Superstition held that if the day was sunny and clear, people could expect a long, rough winter, but if the sky was cloudy, warm weather would soon arrive instead. The Germans then expanded on this tradition, introducing the hedgehog. They believed that if the sun appeared and the hedgehog saw his shad- ow, there would be six more weeks of bad weather, or a “Second Winter.” This tra- dition was later altered even further, by using groundhogs when the Germans came as settlers to Pennsylvania and noticed that groundhogs were more easily found. February truly is the month of love and Galentine’s Day which is celebrated on February 13 fits right in.Galentine festivities originated on the popular tv show . Actress- 's character Leslie Knope brought up the term Galentine's Day to celebrate her female friends on Feb. 13, otherwise known as Valentine's Day eve. We’re quick to shower our significant others with gifts and treats on February 14, but the day prior was de- signed to celebrate other equally important relationships in our lives: our girl- friends! Galentine’s Day is a time to bring together the all the lady friends in your life you love most. We celebrate President’s day on February 17th but the story of when Presi- dents' Day originated dates back to the year 1800. Following the death of George Washington in 1799, his February 22 birthday became a perennial day of remembrance. At the time, Washington was venerated as the most important figure in American history, and events like the 1832 centennial of his birth and the start of construction of the Washington Monument in 1848 were cause for national celebration. While Washington’s Birthday was an un- official observance for most of the 1800s, it was not until the late 1870s that it be- came a federal holiday. The proposed change was seen by many as a novel way to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers, and it was believed that ensuring holidays always fell on the same weekday would also reduce employee absenteeism in the workplace. Happy Birthday!!!!!
