Deno Rd. facebook.com/ Airway Heights, WA 99224 instagram.com/ ahparksandrec ah_parksandrec (509) 244-4845 LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Whoa, what a summer it has been! The Recreation Center has officially been open for four months now and the summer season was an amazing show of community support for the new facility. We especially want to thank our members for their patience as we continue to work out the kinks that come along with such an amazing multi-use building. Every day the center is open it is full of community members of all ages enjoying everything that the facility has to offer. Whether it’s a lively game of pick-up basketball, seniors participating in our SAIL exercise program, families enjoying the lazy river, or just socializing in the community lobby, there is no doubt that the facility is in full use. The initial feedback we are receiving from our members has been very positive. People are enjoying the facility. People who take a tour are pleased with the layout and variety of equipment that we have to offer and often initiate a membership at the conclusion of their tour. Community members finally have a place close to home that supports a healthy lifestyle and promotes community. It has been rewarding watching our community members coming together and socializing with each other which is strengthening the fabric of our community. As we move into the fall months, we are excited about the packed schedule of programs, events, and activities that our Parks & Recreation Staff have put together. Planning fall activities for the whole family couldn’t be more fun, and the Airway Heights community can look forward to opportunities to get active, try something new, and celebrate annual traditions. We look forward to seeing new and familiar faces in our many upcoming programs and events. Thank you, and we hope to see you out enjoying a season full of fun here in Airway Heights. J.C. Kennedy Parks & Recreation Director

COMMUNITY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT POLICE CHIEF LEE BENNETT This December, Police Chief Lee Bennett will retire after proudly serving in law enforcement for 39 years, the last 16 here in the City of Airway Heights. Chief Bennett came to Airway Heights in March of 2003 focused on improving safety and quality of life in a growing city, as well as building a dedicated professional police force that could meet the needs of the residents and business community. Chief Bennett has worked tirelessly to gain the trust and respect of citizens, the City Council, staff, and local businesses with a special emphasis on protecting children and vulnerable adults. Chief Bennett has long supported Parks & Recreation, and been one of the biggest advocates for the department. During his tenure with the City he also served as Interim City Manager in 2007 and 2008 and has also served as Deputy City Manager in the absence of the City Manager. During his time as Interim City Manager, Chief Bennett recognized a disconnect in parks maintenance and recreation programming operating as separate services in two different city departments and advocated for the merging maintenance duties under one department to better serve the citizens by forming a true Parks & Recreation Department. It was his foresight and vision for what this department could bring to our residents, and his unwavering support, that has guided this department and City to where we are at today. instagram.com/ Thank You Chief Bennett for your service to our community. ah_parksandrec GENERAL INFO & POLICIES

So be sure to bring your clean green OO Rake and mulch yard and garden debris down to Sunset Park, 924 S Lawson St, on Saturday October 19th. Parks & Rec Staff will be onsite OO Give the lawn one last mow (not too short) to assist residents with the proper disposal of approved items OO Aerate from 9:00am to 2:00pm. OO Fertilize the lawn ACCEPTING: OO Divide and cut back perennials Branches and limbs less than 2 inches in diameter, leaves, pinecones, pine needles, grass clippings, thatch, OO Protect cold-sensitive plants and garden vegetation. OO Plant bulbs, shrubs, and fall annuals

NOT ACCEPTING: OO Prune trees and shrubs Dirt, sod, rocks, untrimmed tree branches & limbs, plastic (Trim rogue branches, and uplift trees to 8ft above the sidewalk and street.) bags, & general household garbage. OO Clean out the gutters *PROOF OF RESIDENCY REQUIRED* OO Clear the deck and store or cover patio Water bill with photo ID. furniture and grill OO Clean and store tools

Here’s why fall is an ideal time to prune trees:

DISEASE MANAGEMENT • Fresh cuts during dormant season are less likely to attract disease-carrying insects and spread bacteria and fungi WEATHER PREP • Removing weak or damaged limbs leave the tree stronger for severe winter weather. IMPROVED HEALING • Winter pruning causes less stress on trees and allows for robust new growth in the spring. PRECISION PRUNING • Leafless structures are easier to see, providing a good way to determine healthy branch structure. MORE EFFICIENT • Access is often easier and potentially less damaging to delicate landscaping plantings. OPENS SUNLIGHT • Pruning is beneficial to grass and plants because it opens sunlight through the canopy.
