Twilight Activities

Youth Sports Night began in October 2010 and over the first 10 week period there were 191 attendances averaging 19 on a weekly basis. More recently, attendances have soared to over 40, with some youngsters travelling some distance to attend the sessions. 23 youngsters will have achieved an accredited outcome for football and 3 so far for an introduction to the gym. Accredited outcomes identify skills that the youngsters achieve from taking part in a specific activity.

From interviews undertaken during the sessions, Person ‘A’ who regularly attends the youth night stated he used to “hang around the streets, doing nothing good ….this programme has helped to change that”; Person ‘B’ agrees: “Yeah, just used to get into trouble…”. ‘A’ feels good about being on the programme: “[it’s] good…I like the fact that people give their time up to help us out”. Other participants’ comment: “I am now feeling better about myself ‘cos I’m not out causing trouble anymore.”; “[I feel] calmer; definitely calmed down a bit”

Youth Worker X said: “The feedback from young people is that they are really enjoying the five aside football; I believe that this has had a big impact on young people attending the project. I also feel that the impact of the gym sessions have had a good impact on young people, and learning the benefits of keeping a healthy lifestyle”

Healthier Communities

Lifestyle Programme ‘Health4Life’

‘Health4Life’ is a 12week lifestyle management programme, which aims to introduce and educate adult participants in a number of lifestyle management practices that will improve their overall health and well being, for example: increased physical activity; weight management, healthy diet; stress management and smoking cessation. The programmes ambition is to deliver 150 outcomes within the borough’s three leisure centre’s; Bushey, Potters Bar and Borehamwood within the 12 months. All participants will be enrolled onto the programme through a one to one consultation with a lifestyle consultant who analyses current lifestyles habits and identifies small goals with the individual. The programme uses the primary care evidencebased ProHealthClinical computer programme (1) to offer patients personal and practical lifestyle and weight guidance covering: healthy eating ideas, increasing activity, goalsetting, tracking changes and monitoring outcomes.

Throughout the programme participants are rewarded with incentives which include free use of the health suite, fitness classes, swimming, court hire and gym. In addition, participants will, upon completion of 8 weeks of intervention receive one month free Beaumonts Gym membership, providing the opportunity for free use of the centre and a wide range of classes and activities (worth £50 per month for each participant). At the end of this month a postproject evaluation will take place with the individual to assess the impact of the programme on their lifestyle. Sandy Evans, GP dietician and codeveloper of ProHealthClinical is pleased to be working with Hertsmere Leisure. Sandy points out that “Health4Life offers GP practices a very costeffective way to initiate healthier lifestyles for their patients wishing to lose weight. Most longterm studies show that individuals who become and remain more active maintain a greater weight loss .” The Health4Life project team have worked on promoting this programme in consultation with HNS and whilst self referrals are accepted, the programme hopes to impact on the GP practices by offering a programme of alternative medicine. The programme has had featured ads in the and Borehamwood newspapers as well as in GP practice newsletters,

‘Press Release’

Hertsmere Leisure works with NHS & Pro Health to tackle rising levels of obesity, whereby a lifestyle management programme is being offered free of charge to residents of Hertsmere who want to make a change to their lives. The programme, which is funded by Hertsmere Together, will be delivered by Hertsmere Leisure over the next year. Running over 12 weeks, each programme is designed to look at the individual’s lifestyle and identify where changes can be made. Participants will receive one to one sessions with an instructor, will be given the opportunity to try out a variety of activities at their local leisure Centre free of charge and everyone who completes the programme will be rewarded with 1 months’ FREE membership. The programme covers a range of lifestyle topics such as encouraging healthy eating, promoting physical activity, identifying habits, goal setting, motivation, overcoming obstacles and keeping on track.

Tom Smith, a Health and Fitness expert who is running the courses says, “We are very proud to have received this funding from Hertsmere Together which will enable us to run life changing courses for local residents over the next year. We will be offering four 12 week programmes in Borehamwood, Potters Bar and Bushey, helping to tackle obesity and other health related issues. These courses could be life changing for people that just don’t know where to start, or don’t have the courage to join a gym. This little ice breaker into better health and fitness offers those taking part lots of support and a gentle push in the right direction”.

Early indications are extremely encouraging providing evidence of the impact this programme is having within the local community. To date, 90 individuals have expressed their interest in joining the ‘Health4Life’ Programme since mid November. 15 patients were enrolled on the pilot programme in Bushey in partnership with Schopwick Surgery. From this programme 50% of participants have achieved weight loss with an average of 2.2 pounds with one individual losing 7.4% of his bodyweight. A further 25 individuals have expressed their desire to join the first programme in Borehamwood which was over subscribed. Whilst it is early days for these participants this programme has seen 100% improvement in weight loss of participants retained at 3 weeks with an average weight loss of 7.2 pounds. Waiting lists are now in place for all 3 areas.

13

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

Participants complete a lifestyle survey prior to starting the programme to identify current lifestyle habits; for those who have joined the programme the following applies.

• Attendees were active more regularly and there was a significant increase in the % of them that felt being active was important • The % of attendees not feeling in control of their body weight reduced from 86% to 50%; and • The % of attendees who didn’t feel in control of their lives decreased from 43% to 17%

Lifestyle Programme, ‘Health4Life’ Focus Group

Facilitated on 24th February 2011 by Mike Hill Attend by Jim / Peter / Liz / Richard

1. What are your main reasons for taking part?

Liz – after 6 years I have finally got a place in the London marathon, so I wanted to get back on track to do it. I have high B/P am fatigued, now middle aged and I saw the ad in the paper so made contact to help me.

Peter – I was referred from my GP. I now have asthma and I was in hospital in 2010 with a chest infection and the Dr suggested that exercise would help me. 17

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

Richard – I am diabetic and was referred by my GP. I wanted to do something; I wasn’t exercising, was losing fitness and thought it was the best thing to get motivated. I was competing in tenpin bowling since I was 7 years old but stopped as I got older and got married. I have done my programme at the Venue which was really good.

Jim – I have a sedentary job as a service engineer and have been on B/P tablets for about 15 years, have put on weight and slowed down. I had no interest in anything, was exhausted and I went to the GP who referred me. I had angina 3 years ago but that’s all ok now and it was when I struggled to complete a round of golf that I always played that I knew I had to do something.

2. How did you feel when you started the programme?

Liz – It gave me a focus and was nice having that time to devote to me in my busy life. I am very enthusiastic and really enjoy coming.

Jim – I was pleased the GP suggested this as I wouldn’t do it on my own. The structured environment helps me to stick to it as I know I have to see Tom.

Richard – The same, I wasn’t doing anything, was becoming a couch potato. This has now pushed me to want to do it, I want to go every day, want to get fit. I would love to be able to do a half marathon, now I have a goal to achieve. I am overweight now and want to get fitter and leaner and healthier.

Peter – I cannot fault Tom for his enthusiasm as this really rubs off, but with the activity vouchers we need to be given more, one isn’t enough to help us get more active.

3. How do you find the fortnightly sessions with Tom?

Peter – Fine it’s just the activity vouchers

4. Why are they so important?

Peter – It’s the help with getting started and if we can’t access because we only have 1 voucher.

18

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

Liz – It’s a big commitment and you normally have to sign up for a period of time, with my busy lifestyle it is hard to do but having tried it I really enjoyed it, the vouchers were the carrot to get in

5. What about doing activity outside?

When we started the weather was really bad outside. If we could have 2 vouchers per week it would be a start and when we see Tom we would feel like we have made progress to show him and he would see the difference.

I thoroughly enjoyed the induction, more vouchers available would help but I did come in to swim which was fine.

6. Did Tom’s session give you all you needed?

Liz – Tom is very enthusiastic, maybe half an hour with Tom isn’t enough, perhaps 45 minutes would be better.

Peter – Tom has great ambitions, has great ideas that he has thought through and explains with detail.

7. Have you achieved anything from the programme so far?

Richard – More positive outlook, determined to do it, very positive attitude now, am inspired to do it. When I get home from work I cannot be bothered but the Centre is ideal in the winter months with the gym and pool in a comfortable environment.

Liz – the streets are not safe, I was running outside in the evening but then it got dark and I didn’t feel safe. I feel invigorated and generally better.

Richard Have swum and walked but not been to the Centre much, I find it easier to go for a walk that get my stuff ready and go to the gym.

8. How determined are you to make life changes for the future?

Jim – get so fed up with feeling bad and having no energy, my grandsons asked if I would go and play football with them and I don’t.

19

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

Richard – I would continue as I don’t want to be a couch potato, I wasn’t when I was young and so don’t want to be now. I want to change my life and get fitter. I want to be around for a long time for my daughter and to do activities with her to help her achieve and want her to be proud of how I look.

Peter – Health reasons. If I lose the weight it can help so this is my focus.

Liz – I am determined to carry on, I have really enjoyed it, it has been a real boost and I wanted to do something for me.

Back into Sport

Free Swimming During the period of December 2009 – November 2010 a total of 10,569 senior free swims and 8,304 junior free swims have been recorded. These swims have been attended by 520 unique registered senior residents and 1492 unique registered junior residents

Targeted Activity Vouchers

The Trust also offers targeted provision of physical activity programmes to reduce health inequalities in partnership with the Children’s Centre. Physical activity vouchers and Hert Cards are issued free of charge for targeted families identified by the Children’s Centre as a broader package of care in response to families needs. They are also looking to target rising levels of obesity by promoting access to leisure facilities.

One particular family identified by the Children’s Centre staff provides the following scenario; “the grandma cares for the two children as the mum is in care with mental health issues. As access to facilities is an issue for the grandma the activity vouchers are assisting with this.”

The Children’s Centre is also issuing some families with a Hert Card to access activities at the Leisure Centre’s at a subsidised rate.

A total of 30 vouchers have so far been issued in Borehamwood, Bushey and Potters Bar since January 2011.

The impact will mainly be measured by case studies, but some reaction from clients has already been received:

“My son R …. seems a lot more confident and less shy and it has really benefited him. He loves coming and we look forward to attending a lot more sessions. Thank you for this opportunity” (Rory is 2½ and has apert syndrome which is a genetic disorder causing deformity to his head and face)

“I loved having the opportunity to swim with my child! I will definitely take her swimming more often!”

“The free voucher was a great incentive to go to the Venue. I now know more about what they offer.”

24

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

“Soft Play at the Venue is amazing! My child loved it! And so did I!”

“I never realised just how much the Venue has to offer. Since attending my free session I have been using their café and Soft Play almost every week! Thank you Children’s Centre for introducing us!”

Post Natal Programme

The programme has been running for a total of 12 weeks from November 2009 to January 2011 with a total of 21 mums registered and 75 attendances and average of 8 each week

One mum has commented on the benefits of attending the session; “The class helps boost my mood when I’ve felt a bit low, having an instructor experienced with postnatal mums gives me the confidence to push myself. It is a great social workout for the mums which has brought me back to the fitness centre, I hadn’t been for a few years.”

Livewire Hertsmere Leisure has received a total of £10,000 in funding from Jan 2010 to December 2010 to offer subsidised activities. A total of 10 activities were available during the autumn of 2010 with an attendance of 279 aged 814 over 10 week period. Survey:

• The % of attendees doing an hour of activity 5 days a week increased by just over 30% • 58% of attendees said they definitely felt more confident about themselves after completing the course, while 53% said definitely had more energy • 61% said they were very likely to continue being active after the completion of the programme • Pre and post surveys:

Equality of Access

FREE Swimming Session

The Trust currently offers free organised swimming for people with disabilities and their families. Barracuda have been using the swimming pool at the Furzefield Centre for over 20 years and Otters have been using the swimming pool at The Venue for over 10 years.

Free Activities for Young People

Hertsmere Leisure continues to work in partnership with extended schools to help children and young people aged 5 to 17 increase accessibility of services and activities in the Borough. Since the scheme began in June 2009 the Hertsmere Leisure has helped over 50 families take advantage of the facilities across the borough to the value of £4,300.

The extended schools coordinator for Potters Bar has reported on one particular individual.

"J, a pupil at Owens, received funding to attend the Day Camp at the Furzefield centre (£71) and our High School Musical 3 theatre workshop (£15), both at half term, in order to improve her confidence and self esteem. She said that she had such an amazing time at the day camp and the high school musical day. She has made lots of new friends and the counselors there were fantastic and all the staff made her feel extremely welcome. She expressed that it felt good that she had ‘her own time’ and mum was very supportive. So all in all a huge success."

Hert/Leisure Card Promotion

Hert Cards are being issued free of charge for targeted families identified by the Children’s Centre as part of a broader package of care. A total of 8 Hert Cards have been issued to families living in Borehamwood

Hertsmere Borough Council, in partnership with Hertsmere Leisure Trust, has offered residents the opportunity to get 50% off when purchasing or renewing their Hertsmere Leisure Card. Residents who already have a Leisure Card can also benefit from the discount by extending their Leisure Card by 12 months. During the first month of the promotion (September), Hertsmere Leisure saw a 21% increase with 31% for adult 31

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

leisure cards compared with the same period last year. During October, sales were increased by 38% compared with the same period last year, with 45% of leisure card sales for adults and 34% for families. The funding ran out in November which is evident by a decrease in sales in this month compared with last year.

Hertsmere Leisure Training Academy

Pen Portraits

Paul, 35, from , wanted to further his career in the leisure industry, but he found it difficult to get back into writing essays and completing assignments after having finished university so many years before. He also found it difficult to try to find the time to complete the assignments, whilst balancing my work and family commitments. Since completing the course he has gained promotion to Centre manager

“Because this was a professional qualification it is more recognised than my degree in the industry I currently work in, and so should help me to progress further within my chosen field. I am grateful for being supported by Hertsmere Leisure, to achieve a qualification that will help me to achieve my future goals.”

Sarah,25, from Hertfordshire, joined HL back in 2002 as a Trainee Leisure Assistant at Bushey Grove, then moved on to The Venue as a Full Time Leisure Assistant, then on to a Senior LA, and is now a Duty Manager thanks to the Training Academy.

Sarah joined HL because she always wanted to work within Leisure, and having joined and seeing that she could one day work her way up spurred her on to stay.

“I am glad I am still working for HL and hope to for many years to come as I enjoy working for the company and think the company helps a lot of people in the community. Hertsmere Leisure are a great company to work for and I hope to keep on working for them for many years to come.”

Sharon is 30 years old, and lives in . She started at William Penn in 2002 as a leisure assistant and then became a senior leisure assistant and cover duty manager in 2007. In May 2009 I was promoted to Administration manager.

“I have always had a desire to succeed and they have given the opportunity to this by offering me numerous training courses and extra training to help me for fill my job role. I have found that my managers have been encouraging and very supportive to help me achieve my full 37

Hertsmere Culture Impact Study: Appendix 2 March 2011

potential by recommending training courses to help me with my job role and also to further myself. The NVQ assessor was very supportive as well as my managers in helping me to complete the course.”

Sharon now feels more confident in her job role and feels with continued support and training courses she will still able to progress in her job and move up the ladder into more demanding job roles.
