Non esistono altre parole per definire Life. L’evento televisivo dell’Estate 2010, una stagione generalmente vuota di contenuti e di novità, è la messa in onda - su Retequattro, in prima visione assoluta italiana, dal prossimo 14 luglio 2010, ogni mercoledì, in prime time - della serie naturalistica più incredibile mai realizzata dalla Natural History Unit di Bbc, il più importante dipartimento del mondo di riprese televisive dedicato alla natura e agli animali. Retequattro e il suo direttore Giuseppe Feyles, con la programmazione di Life intendono così proseguire e rafforzare il proprio impegno nella divulgazione di cultura, cura dell’ambiente e tutela del territorio. Si tratta di 10 episodi (in Italia, trasmessi 2 per serata), interamente girati in Hd, con un budget di oltre 12 milioni di Euro, cifra mai utilizzata per una serie documentaristica. Nella versione originale (in onda su Bbc One tra ottobre e dicembre 2009), la serie era introdotta da Sir David Attenborough, mentre negli Stati Uniti (Discovery, marzo/maggio 2010) era narrata da Oprah Winfrey. Al centro del racconto di Life, come non sono mai stati visti prima d’ora, animali e piante e la loro lotta per la sopravvivenza, per un totale di 130 storie, di cui ben 54 mai rese con un tale dettaglio sino ad oggi. Enorme lo sforzo produttivo: più di 3mila giorni di riprese; 4 gli anni di lavoro necessari per portare a termine il progetto; 7 i continenti visitati, contemplando tutti gli habitat, dislocati in aree perlopiù selvagge e remote. Infine, per il commento musicale, il pluri-candidato agli Oscar George Fenton. All’avanguardia, le risorse tecnologiche adottate. Super telecamere ad alta velocità, capaci di registrare sino ad 8mila fotogrammi al secondo, hanno reso visibile l’invisibile, congelando istanti sino ad ora impercettibili ad occhio nudo. Sono sbalorditive le sequenze delle azioni di animali e piante, catturate dal team di Life: lucertole che camminano sull’acqua; addirittura inedita la lingua saettante del camaleonte che cattura un insetto; ansiogena la caduta di una piccola rana, salva per miracolo dopo essersi aggrappata in extremis alla fogliolina di un albero. Tra le tante accortezze tecniche utilizzate, uno stabilizzatore giroscopico per le riprese e, nelle sequenze aeree, l’uso di una mongolfiera per non compromettere l’ambiente circostante (ad esempio per riprendere il volo notturno di migliaia di pipistrelli o quello di un enorme sciame di farfalle). Per l’Italia, la voce ed il volto di Life è quello della giornalista Tessa Gelisio, conduttrice di PianetaMare, da sempre personalmente impegnata nella tutela dell’ambiente e degli animali, fondatrice e attuale presidente dell’associazione ambientalista forPlanet, che raccoglie fondi per patrocinare progetti di recupero e preservazione di habitat a rischio. Life è appena stata nominata a 6 Emmy Awards, come Outstanding Nonfiction Series, Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Picture Editing for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Sound Editing for Nonfiction Programming (Single or Multi-Camera), Outstanding Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming, Outstanding Writing for Nonfiction Programming. We have the technical means for it.” - Michel Foucault, “The Masked Philosopher”1 The first episode of Planet Earth II (BBC Nature 2016),2 the celebrated follow up to the 2006 nature documentary series, opens on the striking, emerald green island of Escudo, home to the three- toed pigmy sloth. David Attenborough’s narration introduces the character and stages the major drama of the sequence: “he needs a mate.” The sloth appears to doze lazily in the lush greenery, clinging to a mossy tree branch, when a high-pitched cry sounds off screen: “that’s an enticing call from a female. Somewhere out there.” Through a spectacular series of shots, we see the sloth swing between branches, swim across a crystal-clear stretch of turquoise water, and finally arrive at a cluster of trees. A medium shot captures the sloth treading water as he looks up, followed by a point of view shot that gazes up at the tree tops where another sloth appears perched in the branches: “could this be her?” He climbs up the tree, making his way toward the mystery female, culminating in dramatic close up of the sloth whose gaze is directed upward, off screen [Figure 1]. “But she’s not the one,” Attenborough reveals, with the programme’s cut to the female sloth who looks down at the male and swings her arm to reveal a baby clinging to her furry chest.

    Networks of Nature: Stories of Natural History Film-Making from the BBC Gail Davies Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Submitted 1997 Awarded 1998 University College London Gail Davies Phd: Networks of nature Abstract In May 1953 the first natural history television programme was broadcast from Bristol by naturalist Peter Scott and radio producer Desmond Hawkins. By 1997 the BBC's Natural History Unit has established a global reputation for wildlife films, providing a keystone of the BBC's public service broadcasting charter, playing an important strategic role in television scheduling and occupying a prominent position in a competitive world film market. The BBC's blue-chip natural history programmes regularly bring images of wildlife from all over the globe to British audiences of over 10 million. This thesis traces the changing aesthetics, ethics and economics of natural history film-making at the BBC over this period. It uses archive material, interviews and participant observation to look at how shifting relationships between broadcasting values, scientific and film-making practices are negotiated by individuals within the Unit. Engaging with vocabularies from geography, media studies and science studies, the research contextualises these popular representations of nature within a history of post-war British attitudes to nature and explores the importance of technology, animals and conceptions of the public sphere as additional actors influencing the relationships between nature and culture. This history charts the construction of the actor networks of the Natural History Unit by film- makers and broadcasters as they seek to incorporate and exclude certain practices, technologies and discourses of nature.
