I hardly suppose I know anybody who wouldn't rather be a success than a failure; Just as I suppose every piece of crabgrass in the garden would much rather be an azalea. And in celestial circles all the run-of-the-mill angels would rather be archangels or at least cherubim and seraphim, And in the legal world all the little process-servers hope to grow up into great l)ig bailiffim and sheriffim. Indeed, everybody wants to be a wow. But not everybody knows exactly how. Some people think they will eventually wear diamonds instead of rhinestones Only by everlastingly keeping their noses to their grhinestones. And other people think they will be able to put in more time at Palm Beach and the Ritz. By not paying too much attention to attendance at the office but rather in being brilliant by starts and fits. Some people after a full day's work sit up all night getting a college education by correspondence, While others seem to think they'll get just as far by devoting their evenings to the study of the difference in temperament between brunettance and blondance. Some stake their all on luck, And others put their faith in their ability to pass the buck. In short, the world is filled with people trying to achieve success. And half of them think they'll get it by saying No and half of them by saying Yes, And if all the ones who say No said Yes, and vice versa, such is the fate of humanity that ninety-nine per cent of them still wouldn't be any better off than they were before, Which perhaps is just as well because if everybody was a success nobody could be con temptuous of anybody else and everybody would start in all over again trying to be a bigger success than everybody else so they would have somebody to be contemptuous of and so on forevermore. Because when people start hitching their wagons to a star, That's the way they are.

Men view the sun in many a distant land His face still westward in the sky; Though we should go as far we'll love West High, West High, West High. And 'til the sun forgets his ancient goal And seeks a new path through the sky, Our loyal hearts beat for you, West High, West High, West High.

September 7, 1960 is a day we won't forget— For the thrill of becoming 12 A's lingers with I We had our own special lunchroom where nc And we talked with much excitement while v We had already chosen our i And they had plans to help us have a real swell time that fall. Our class picnic the summer before had started things off right. We all had a wonderful time and we were all full of delight. We needed funds like all classes do, you know, So we had our class movie at the drive-in-show. Our senior mixer, "Hoot'n Holler Hoedown," was one of our biggest times. We had all kinds of dancing including a boys' hula line! n Our senior banguet was another gay affair— Our class advisors, Mr. Darrow and Miss Brown were there. The prophecy, read in a most original way. Made every class member feel very happy and gay. During this evening each moment was guite dear. For the time of parting was drawing very near. Our senior prom. "Wonderland By Night," Was of course to us seniors a very big highlight. Baccalaureate at Westgate Methodist will be remembered through the years. For while we sat there as a group, our eyes filled with tears. It was January twenty-fourth, nineteen hundred and sixty-one— Yes, that long-awaited graduation day had finally come. As we look back on our high school days, our hearts are filled with cheer; And we shall never be without memories of our SENIOR YEAR. Sandra Amore—Equestrian Club 1, G.A.A. 1-2. The 1960-61 basketball squad had a fair season even though four (and sometimes five) sophomores were on the starting five. With only four non- letter-winners back from last year's squad, Coach Fred Heischman's crew caused other teams a lot of trouble. The Cowboys closed the regular season with a 6-12 record overall and 5-7 record in the City League. One of the highlights of the season was the Cowboys upset of Central on January 13 by a score of 72-69. Returning members of last year's team were John Crum, Terry Barnett, Bill Detwiler and Dwight Newman. They finished the season just missing 100 points in beating M-F, 99-66. No tournament data was available at press time. With four sophomores and a junior in the starting line-up, prospects for a fine team next year are very good.

Following the West vs. Eastmoor basketball game February 17, 1961, was the 1961 Basketball Homecoming Dance, "February Follies." The highlight of the dance was the crowning of the King, Gary Weigand and Queen, Debby Draper. The court for queen consisted of Anne Halley, Sharon Delon, Carol Rinehart, and Linda Fuller. The court for king in cluded Terry Barnett, John Crum, Bill Bell, Dwight Newman. This dance is only one of the many activities sponsored by the Journalism Department.

Bill Doughty, Larry McQuerrey, Danny Snyder took first places at the Franklin Hts. Holiday Tournament. Bill also won the best wrestler award for the Tournament. Bill and Danny also won first places in a Pleasantview Tournament. West won third place as a team in the Franklin Hts. Tournament against ten teams. Four mat men made it through the sectional meet to the district. Larry McQuer rey was the only boy to go to the State meet in the last three years of wrestling at West.

The West High Cross Country team, under the coaching of Rufus Glass, placing fourth in the city and sixth in the district. Some of the happier times were had by the team when they beat: Eastmoor, Marion Franklin, Springfield, and Gahanna Lincoln. Not so happy times were had when they lost to Worthington, Upper Arlington, North, Marion Harding, Mansfield and close ones to East and Central. In the City Meet at Raymond Memorial Golf Course, West placed fourth, with O'del' Walters and Dennis Thompson winning qold medals. In the District West placed sixth, with Walters taking a silver medal, Thomp son a gold one. The West High Reserve Cowboys under Dwight Black were playing better than .500 ball at press time. The reserves worked every night after school in hopes that they might next year make the varsity team. The main purpose of the reserves is to supply the varsity with well trained men in fundamentals. This season marked Coach Black's third year of coach ing at West and the Reserves best in recent years.

These six exuberant young ladies led fans throughout the football and basketball seasons in cheering our Cowboys on to victory and even kept us yelling in 'darker hours. Through original pep rallies this energetic crew promoted spirit and good sportsmanship. 61

We are mighty proud of these Cowboy enthusiasts who were always there with their "Hi, ho, let's go!" They were chosen from the spring tryouts and were judged on personality, gestures, voice, and ap pearance. Etodkum

The years 1960-61 marked the continuance of the Occident as the best school newspaper in Central Ohio. Under the leadership of its editor, Pat Cotter, the Occident tried to have "something for everyone." Even though the number of pages had lo be reduced, the staff attempted to make the best out of what they had. The Occident staff, through the Journalism Department, assumes editorial responsibility for the paper, school stories in the Record, and some news releases in the Citizen-Journal and Dispatch. In these ways, the staff has tried to keep you students informed of the hap penings at your school. Members of the staff this year have entered many journalistic competitions in various fields. Pat Cotter brought home a gold trophy for first place and a second place in another category. Penny Hudson, Penny Rice, and Dick Williamson took seconds; John Edwards and Jim Roberts, thirds; and Judy Vargo. honorable mention.

Meeting qualifications for the National Honor Society is no easy task. Membership is based on the scholastic rating during the four years of high school, a 3.5 average must be maintained. However, the scholastic rating of a student is not the only re quirement for membership. Leadership, character and 14 service points are also required. Being a member of the National Honor Society is the highest honor a graduating senior at West High School can achieve, and credit should be given to the students pictured here who have proven worthy of membership. West High Student Court is composed of one sen ior chief justice, a senior justice, two junior jus tices, a sophomore justice, two bailiffs, two court attorneys, and one court clerk. These judicial of ficers are nominated by the presidents of the two senior classes, the presidents of Hi-Y and Y-Teens and student council presidents. Student Court procedure is much like that of our civil courts. The defendant is permitted to use his own witnesses and may appoint anyone to defend him or may defend himself. Not all Student Court in action cases are lost; there are verdicts of "Innocent." Cases that are considered too controversial for Student Court are sent tc the office.

The snappy West High Marching Band has made a very colorful showing at all the football games, proving it takes hard work and practice to do good. Besides marching at the games they also played a concert and participated in the pa rade at the Circleville Pumpkin show in October. This year the band carried on what is hoped to become a tradition—a homecoming parade which they started last year. There were 54 members of the band march ing this year and also six majorettes in the band. The band was under the direction of Mr. John Dale.

The West High School majorettes practice many hours during the summer vacation so that they will be ready to lead the band in the fine performances when the football season commences. Ability, show manship in marching, strut ting, fundamental twirls and baton routines are re quired in order to be a majorette. They also must maintain a "C" average in all subjects. No one will ever forget the fine shows they have given us. I -

The West High Orchestra has been busy par ticipating in many events this past year. Among these were several assemblies and the winter and spring concerts given by the instrumental department. Also a Christmas party, sponsored by the Band and Orchestra Parents, was given for all instrumental pupils as well as several Parents meetings being planned for the pupils with such speakers as Ziggy Coyle, Chuck Selbey, and Evan Whallon, director of the Columbus Sym phony Orchestra.
