Snorkelling on Lady Elliot Island, Southern Great Barrier Reef ‘Home of the Manta Ray’
Lady Elliot Island is a coral cay situated at the southern tip of Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef. Lady Elliot Island is located in a declared ‘Marine National Park Green Zone’ and is one of the most pristine and untouched sections of the Great Barrier Reef. It is one of the few islands where you can access the reef straight off the beach and be surrounded by over 1,200 different species fish and marine life including turtles, dolphins, manta rays, reef sharks and migrating humpback whales (in season).
Each guest will receive a complimentary glass bottom boat/guided snorkelling tour during their stay on Lady Elliot Island and our Dive Shop staff will assist with all of your snorkelling equipment requirements. Floatation devices and wetsuits are available for hire if needed. Daily snorkelling lessons are held in the Resort Pool free of charge for beginner snorkelers to ensure confidence in the water.
Snorkelling Sites Always take the time to discuss current conditions, tide times and designated snorkel entry/exit points with the Dive Shop before entering the water. The Lagoon, Fish Pool and Channel One are recommended for children and beginner snorkelers. Lady Elliot Island has developed a range of snorkelling trails so please talk to one of our friendly team members for a snorkel trail map.
The Lagoon is tide dependant so the best time to snorkel in this area is 2 hours prior to or after high tide. If you are looking for other activities, why not join a guided reef walk, visit the Reef Education Centre or talk to one of the Activities staff to see what activities are scheduled for the day.
Before you enter into the water: Be aware of your own physical limitations and swimming ability and do not try to exceed them. If you suffer from any of the following conditions please inform our Dive staff before entering the water:
