Current CAFE and GHG rules require MY2016 light-duty vehicles to average 35 mpg and increase to 54.5 mpg by MY2025. The rules also mandate a Midterm Review by late 2017 to reevaluate MYs 2022¿2025. An NAS study is being issued which assesses technical feasibility and cost effectiveness to achieve the standards, consumer acceptance, impacts on safety, and the appropriateness of the regulatory process, itself. This panel will provide an overview of the NAS report, reactions from regulatory and automotive senior leadership, and debate concerning the best path forward to balance environmental, OEM and consumer needs. One solution to this conflict is innovation; the emergence of technology that meets the targets at a cost level bearable by consumers and the industry. This panel will reflect on various technology paths to 2025. Is disruption needed or is a smart combination of existing technologies able to meet the goal? What new technologies are emerging that could get us there? Are the costs of electrification falling fast enough to allow hybrids to become widespread? The participants in this panel will present and discuss these important topics. Moderators - Uwe Dieter Grebe, AVL LIST GmbH Panelists - Menahem Anderman, Advanced Automotive Batteries; Juergen J.
