35 Countries | 15 Questions Benvenuti a Bosco Albergati! freedomfreedom forfor thethe terracesterraces 20142014 35 COUNTRIES | 15 QUESTIONS BENVENUTI A BOSCO ALBERGATI! Twelve months passed by and we are all together again on European Football Fans Congress. The 7th congress takes place in Bosco Albergati, Italy – at the Mondiali Antirazzisti (world’s biggest anti-racist football festival). This project has started originally as a part of an exhibition in Hamburg, in 2006. It’s still an exhibition – every year as a part of European Football Fans Congress - but it’s also published as a reader. As the time runs by it’s also deep and big research organised and developed by football fans. And it’s still growing! For this year we would like to warmly welcome Australia as a new member in our project. As usually, we addressed 35 supporters all over the world. And as the result we submitted to you presentation of all of those 35 countries, which 27 of them were newly updated for this year. Rest updates will follow in online version of the reader in a few weeks. “Freedom of the terraces” is a project of ProFans in association with FSE. ProFans is a nationwide supporters’ organisation in Germany, dedicated in the fight of supporter’s rights. Actually, ProFans and FSE just provide an organisational framework, but work is done by many other people around Europe, resp. around the World. We have to say that you did a fantastic work this year again. So, thank you very much, for answering our questions, connecting people or just being supportive! The result is magnificent! In case of any question or if you miss a country or you would like to add something, don’t hesitate to contact us via e-mail: [email protected] And now: Enjoy! “perplexity is the beginning of knowledge…” Kahlil Gibran A Tear and A Smile (1950) STYLIN’! SAMBA JOY VERSUS STRUCTURAL PRECISION THE SOCCER CASE STUDIES OF BRAZIL AND GERMANY Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Susan P. Morgan Professor Sarah Fields _______________________________ Adviser College of Education Graduate Program Copyright by Susan P. Milby 2006 ABSTRACT Soccer playing style has not been addressed in detail in the academic literature, as playing style has often been dismissed as the aesthetic element of the game. Brief mention of playing style is considered when discussing national identity and gender. Through a literature research methodology and detailed study of game situations, this dissertation addresses a definitive definition of playing style and details the cultural elements that influence it. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.
