Poland’s contribution to world cinema has been immense. This class offers an examination of the chief currents of modern Polish film, including, but not limited to, the cinema of “the Polish School” of the 1950s and 60s, the works of experimental and avant- garde auteurs, satires and parodies of the late-socialist period, historical “great canvas” films, as well as more recent work that addresses the dramas, desires, and discontents of political transition and the realities of post-communist society. We will discuss the ways Polish filmmakers have represented Polish history, and how they have “read” history through their work. We will consider Polish cinema within the context of both Western European film and film production in the Soviet Bloc. A main focus will be on the oeuvre of Poland’s most recognized and prodigious filmmakers, including Wajda, Kieslowski, Ford, Polanski, Holland, Zanussi, and Hoffman, as well as on the work of “Wajda’s children” – the newest generation of filmmakers. It was a reprint of a 1923 article “The Polish Peasant” from the American Catholic Quarterly Review. This article was written by Mr. Clemons himself, and provides a brief biography of the great Polish writer, Władysław Stanisław Reymont. One might ask how this relates to Polish genealogy; but over the years, I have often seen researchers of Polish genealogy praise Reymont’s best-known work, Chłopi or The Peasants, as a wonderful story that gave them valuable insights into the lives of their ancestors. So I think many of our readers may find this information interesting. I should mention that different years of publication are often cited for Reymont’s works. -

I heard that ‘Hamlet’ was produced in Paris, but I am sure that I would not travel far to see a French ‘Hamlet.’ Germans can play Shakespeare because the spirit of the language is similar. Moreover, they possess the necessary weight and repose, and their translations of Shakespeare and other English plays are excellent (Modjeska 1910: 232). -

Elucidating the blurred lines of the national historical imagination. The narrative allure of Sienkiewicz’s With Fire and Sword in 1933–1934 Poland Estelle BUNOUT Postdoctoral researcher Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), Université du Luxembourg (LU) [email protected] Abstract The novel With Fire and Sword by Henry Sienkiewicz (1846–1916) is an example of the interweaving of fiction, historiography and national collective imagination. It was written at the end of the period of Polish partition (1882–1888) and deals with events that marked the history and the collective imaginations of Poles, Ukrainians and Jews: the history of the Khmel’nyts’kyy Uprising (1648–1657). The epic nature of these historical events already carried the seeds of a powerful and emotional narrative that lends itself to mythicization. However, the reading of this book in a later situation, the Second Polish Republic (1921–1939), led the Polish Sanacja government to withdraw it from the compulsory reading in Polish schools in 1932. This aspect of the Jędrzejewicz school reform sparked a lively debate in the Polish press, whereby historians, literature scholars and journalists discussed the function that this book should have in the patriotic education of young Polish citizens, against the backdrop of tensions between the state and the political opposition on the issue of minorities, namely the Ukrainian minority. This discussion discloses the central place that Sienkiewicz has been given in Polish culture. At the same time, it examines the position that Polish intellectuals attribute to the Ukrainian minority in the Polish state and culture. Studia Celtica Posnaniensia Vol 1 (1), 2016 doi: 10.1515/scp-2016-0002 STORIES FROM POLAND BY A WELSH SOLDIER– JOHN ELWYN JONES’S TRANSLATIONS MARTA KLONOWSKA Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań ABSTRACT The majority of translations from Polish into Welsh published so far are the works of John Elwyn Jones (1921-2008), who learned Polish in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. His translations include Storiâu Byr o’r Bwyleg, a collection of short stories by two of the classic authors of the Polish Positivist period, Bolesław Prus and Henryk Sienkiewicz. This paper analyses two stories from the collection, Ianco’r Cerddor “Janko Muzykant” and Y Wasgod “Kamizelka”, within a comparative functional model of translation criticism. The texts are analysed in the light of lexical-semantic, cultural and aesthetic codes. A great number of modifications to the source texts introduced in the Welsh translation places them on the border between free translations and adaptations. While some of the alterations are tokens of a specific translation strategy, others can be regarded as translation errors. Although the Welsh version retains the primary message of the original stories, much of their culture-specific dimension, historical context and artistic value is not conveyed in the translation. Translations between Polish and Welsh Cultural relations between Poland and Wales have never been particularly strong. This is reflected in a very small number of translations between the two languages. Even in the Romantic period, when the fashion for ‘Celtic’ culture inspired Polish literati to explore Irish or Scottish poetry, Wales remained on the periphery, outside the scope of interest (cf.
