Mosaic a Difference for your community This year, UK volunteering charity CSV is challenging the nation to design a door number for your local community as part of Make a Difference Day on Saturday 30 October. Making a door number mosaic is a creative way to spend time with family and others to brighten up a neighbour’s window, or a local community or homeless shelter. It’s even an economic and environmentally friendly approach to recycle chipped china, broken ceramics and old tiles. CSV are offering a free “How to Make a Door Number Mosaic” guide which features a design pattern from the nation’s favourite designer, Andrea Maflin, to ensure a number mosaic stands out from the crowd. New independent research commissioned by CSV Make a Difference Day campaign reveals that up to half of British people want to spend more time with their family. This year’s campaign is helping to bring people together by encouraging them to give time. For more information visit www.csv.org.uk/difference.

Cybertill launches EpoS specifically for indie retailers Cybertill, one of the leading EPoS and multi- channel system providers, has released a point of sale solution specifically for independent retailers with only one store. Retail Store One enables retailers to access and manage their store from any location using Internet access, a real boon for independents as they will no longer be tied to the store before and after opening. It is estimated that retailers will be able to reduce stock holding by anything between 15% - 40%, freeing up valuable cash flow for the business. “Cybertill has specifically developed this system for single store retailers. As a business we have listened to what many independents have told us about their experience of EPoS systems. Two of the most common factors have been excessive costs and unsuitable software, which is too often designed for multiple retailers. Hence Cybertill has developed an EPoS system that focuses solely on what a single store retailer requires, and there are no superfluous features. What’s more, it is positioned at an affordable price. The whole system, including software, hardware, installation and training is available at £3,499.” said Cybertill’s Chairman, Ian Tomlinson. Retail Store One provides all the tools for independents to manage every aspect of their business, whether it is reducing stock holding, building a client data base at point of sale or raising purchase orders for stock replenishment.

The right recruit The type of temporary recruit you hire will depend on which aspects of the business you’re planning to include them in. If it’s an extra pair of hands on the shop floor you will need the most, you’ll be looking for someone who has customer service experience. This doesn’t necessarily have to be in retail – customer skills are transferable from other disciplines. If it’s the online side of things you think will create the most extra work, someone with a good knowledge of social media platforms would be ideal. If you do decide that you need extra staff

Should I use an recruitment agency, or hire someone myself? Using an agency can help take a lot of the pressure out of legal considerations. For example if you have hired someone through an agency and they were unreliable, it would be the agency who has to manage the temporary worker, and they would inform the person on your behalf that they are no longer required. This would also apply if you just decided you no longer needed the staff. Also, the agency would take responsibility for paying the temp workers National Insurance and holiday pay. The majority of agencies are very approachable and would be able to help with any enquires. When using an agency for temporary staff, remember it’s the agency who pays and naturally you are charged a nominal fee on top, but do not hesitate to negotiate with the agency as most are prepared for this. If after a set amount of time you decide to employ the person directly, you will be charged an introduction fee. Always ask for a copy of the Terms of Business as this will help clarify any underlying issues you may have. C

Why everyone needs a hougie

At some time we have all said “I’m no good at measuring.” The truth is we can all measure. What we can’t do is measure accurately. Hougie can. Hougie has 1/2 and whole centimeters on one side and 1/2 and whole inch’s on the other side. So if your project says score a line at 6cm just turn Hougie over to the cm side, push your card up against the butt edge and score down at the required measure. There’s no need to try and convert cm in to inch’s. They wont go, no matter how hard you try. Hougie measures accurately and right first time. With this knowledge comes confidence. With confidence comes speed. Productivity is also up and best of all. NO CRAFTERS FRUSTRATION

Sales will stay high in New Year MetaPack’s eCommerce 100 Tracker, which analyses despatch records from a cross-section of 100 retail customers, says that online retailers should expect sales not only to be high before Christmas, but after it too, as consumers try to shop before the VAT increase on January 4th. “We will see people going online from around midday on Christmas Day to avoid paying more tax,” says Patrick Wall, chief executive of MetaPack. The company found that last year, online sales rose 28% between September and October, and between October and November they rose another 42%. Between November and December, they rose again by 29%. Customers continued to shop for presents right up until Christmas Eve, and then began shopping straight after Christmas to take advantage of sales. 31% of MetaPack’s retailer customers were still dispatching products on Christmas Eve last year, despite the fact that delivery dates for the big day had already passed. December 29th, which was the first working day post-Christmas, was the fifth-highest on the season’s shopping days online, behind only the four preceding Mondays.
