He had participated in the Boston Tea Party in 1774, and, expecting British retaliation, he helped to organize a group of local patriots to keep watch on British forces in the area. His “Midnight Ride” on the night of April 18, which he recounts in this document, is one of the most famous episodes in American History. General Thomas Gage Reports on the Battles of Lexington and Concord in an Excerpt of a Letter to the Earl of Dartmouth on April 22nd, 1775: http://www.teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=865 Thomas Gage (1719-1787) was commander-in-chief of all British forces in North America from 1763 to 1775. When martial law was declared in Boston in 1774, after the Boston Tea Party, Gage also became governor of Massachusetts, and in that capacity he ordered the arrest of prominent patriot leaders like Samuel Adams and John Hancock. To avoid capture both men fled to Lexington, and on the night of April 18 Gage ordered 700 British regulars to march to the town. Question Answer What do we know about the author of this account? Lord Percy reports on the retreat to General Gage on April 20th, 1775: http://www.teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=866 Lord Hugh Percy (1742-1817) was a powerful English nobleman (he was the Duke of Northumberland, in northern England) who had served as an officer in the British army since 1759. In 1775 he held the rank of Brigadier General, and on April 18 General Thomas Gage, the overall British commander in North America, ordered him to lead a detachment of troops in support of Major John Pitcairn’s advance toward Lexington. Major John Pitcairn reports on the Battles of Lexington and Concord to General Gage on April 26th, 1775: http://www.teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=867 John Pitcairn (1722-1775) was a Major in the British Royal Marines, and was stationed in Boston when that city was placed under martial law after the 1774 Boston Tea Party. On April 18 General Thomas Gage, the commander-in-chief if British forces in North America, assigned him to lead an advance party of British troops in their march on Lexington. Less than two months after writing this account Pitcairn was killed in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and was buried beneath the Old North Church in Boston, where his body remains interred today. John Dickinson to Arthur Lee: April 29th, 1775: http://www.teachingamericanhistory.org/library/index.asp?document=869 John Dickinson (1732-1808) was a wealthy landowner from Maryland who became prominent in politics in the colony of Pennsylvania. He became one of the first Pennsylvania leaders to denounce British tax policies in North America, and in 1774 he was elected to the First Continental Congress. Although an advocate of resistance against what he considered British tyranny, Dickinson was skeptical of outright independence, and continued to hope for some sort of reconciliation with Great Britain. Note: In the first line of this letter the author uses the term “immedicabile vulnus.” This is a Latin term which roughly translates to “hopelessness.” Question Answer What do we know about the author of this account? Whereupon Colonel Washington, standing in his place, spoke as follows: "Mr. President, "Tho' I am truly sensible of the high Honour done me, in this Appointment, yet I feel great distress, from a consciousness that my abilities and military experience may not be equal to the extensive and important Trust: However, as the Congress desire it, I will enter upon the momentous duty, and exert every power I possess in their service, and for support of the glorious cause. I beg they will accept my most cordial thanks for this distinguished testimony of their approbation. It is probable that no one doubts the conspicuous part played by Virginia along certain important lines of activity. In government she took a leading part in the American Revolution, and was the capital of the Southern Confederacy. In politics, she was the headquarters for many years of the great Jeffersonian party, and though a slave State, she was for years the strongest exponent of the democratic principle. In war her population has shown a reniarkable mili- tary spirit and the names of Washington, Scott, Tay- lor, Lee, Johnston, and Jackson easily stand pre- eminent among American generals. And in colo- nization not only were her presidents foremost in the extension of the national domain, but the South and West teem with the millions who are descendants of the early Virginia pioneers. Her association with Science and scientific men is not so well recognized. There is a reason for this. Science—practical science—especially loves the crowded centers, where its activity may receive adequate reward, and rural occupations and a scattered population are not sup- posed to be conducive to scientific pursuits. Now, Virginia has been a land of counties and not of cities and towns. Nevertheless, her records are not a sealed book.     The Hidden Battles of the American Revolution Russ Getchell 2002 I: Introduction A superficial understanding of the Revolutionary War may lead to believe that it was struggle in which the purpose of the colonists was to rid themselves of the cruelty and tyranny associated with the British colonial regime. This is simply not true, or at the very least, it is not the whole truth. For the most part, the inhabitants of the colonies took pride in calling themselves Englishmen, and under the so-called tyrannical regime, enjoyed rights and privileges to a degree that would be considered exceptional in other parts of the 18th century world. The problem that some colonists had with British monarchial rule is that it obligated its subjects to live in a society that adhered to British political understandings, one of them being the need for leaders to demonstrate classical virtue. Originating in the writings of Plato and Aristotle, classical virtue had justified the class system in Europe for centuries. However, as time passed, it became apparent that the ideologies of the Old World were not compatible with the conditions of the New World. One principle that some members of colonial society chafed under was the apparent contradiction between self-interest and republicanism. The proponents of classical virtue put forth the belief that only an individual who was able to rise above all interests could ascend to the moral level at which one could make decisions for the good of the community. Decisions made by a man with interests, especially in the market, would be marred by his own proclivities overriding those of the population whom he was entrusted to represent.

    [1231] ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION HISTORICAL BACKGROUND While the Declaration of Independence was under consideration in the Continental Congress, and before it was finally agreed upon, meas- ures were taken for the establishment of a constitutional form of govern- ment; and on the 11th of June, 1776, it was ‘‘Resolved, That a committee be appointed to prepare and digest the form of a confederation to be entered into between these Colonies’’; which committee was appointed the next day, June 12, and consisted of a member from each Colony, namely: Mr. Bartlett, Mr. S. Adams, Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Sherman, Mr. R. R. Livingston, Mr. Dickinson, Mr. McKean, Mr. Stone, Mr. Nelson, Mr. Hewes, Mr. E. Rutledge, and Mr. Gwinnett. On the 12th of July, 1776, the committee reported a draft of the Articles of Confederation, which was printed for the use of the members under the strictest injunc- tions of secrecy. This report underwent a thorough discussion in Congress, from time to time, until the 15th of November, 1777; on which day, ‘‘Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union’’ were finally agreed to in form, and they were directed to be proposed to the legislatures of all the United States, and if approved by them, they were advised to authorize their delegates to ratify the same in the Congress of the United States; and in that event they were to become conclusive. On the 17th of Novem- ber, 1777, the Congress agreed upon the form of a circular letter to accompany the Articles of Confederation, which concluded with a rec- ommendation to each of the several legislatures ‘‘to invest its delegates with competent powers, ultimately, and in the name and behalf of the State, to subscribe articles of confederation and perpetual union of the United States, and to attend Congress for that purpose on or before the 10th day of March next.’’ This letter was signed by the President of Congress and sent, with a copy of the articles, to each State legisla- ture.

    1 The Forty Niner May 2015 Volume 15, Issue 1 Original Charter 1924 May 2015 • Reactivated 1994 The President’s Message Gold Country Chapter Compatriots, It has been a long time since a newsletter has gone out, and I By Greg Hill would like to thank Compatriot Ron Barker for his dedication to Chapter President our chapter in ensuring it circulates. I ask that you support him in his efforts. If you can write or provide content for the newsletter, please do contribute. The newsletter is both a burden of labor and an invaluable tool for the health of the Chapter. This year, our Chapter was well represented at the CASSAR Spring Meeting in Irvine. I attended the meeting along with Compatriots Ross, Bigbee, Gilliard, Barker and Brooking. Our chapter received numerous awards including the Best Chapter plaque in our cate- gory. We witnessed the installation of our new State President, Kent Gregory, as well as our very own Ron Barker as the new State Executive Vice President. I hope you will join me in wishing them success and supporting them in their new roles. We have many important events coming, as we endeavor to build the chapter membership. The Community Awards meeting in May is nearly upon us. We are working to invite not only our Chapter, Table of Contents but also neighboring Chapters in the Mother Lode and Sacramen- to areas. We also are inviting our own former Compatriots who President’s Message 1&3 may have drifted away over the past few years, letting their dues Officers, Calendar 2 lapse.
