I marts 1945 havde 8th Air Force luftherredømmet over Tyskland og var i stand til at bombe alle mål, som de ønskede at angribe. Med nye navigationssystemer var det endog muligt at bombe hovedparten af målene, selv om målområdet var dækket af skyer. At de allierede havde luftherredømmet betød dog ikke, at Luftwaffe ikke var i stand til udgøre en trussel mod bombeformationerne. Allierede jagerfly og tyskernes brændstofforsyninger gjorde dog truslen meget mindre end de tidligere år og tabsprocenten var så absolut i de allieredes farvør. (Fold3) 8th Army Air Force 2. marts 1945 Også amerikanske 8th Air Force opererede over Tyskland den 2. marts - endda i meget stort antal. Luftwaffe havde et forholdsvis klart billede af situationen i luften over Tyskland og vurderede, at 8th Air Force foretog en stor indflyvning med omkring 1.250 bombefly med jagereskorte for at bombe industri- og transportmål i det centrale Tyskland. Dertil kom så en engelsk indflyvning til Köln og tomotorede bombeflys angreb på mål i Rhinområdet. Luftwaffeführungsstab Ic vurderede 8th Air Force indflyvningen således: Westen Viermot Kampfverbände Den Kampfverbänden voraus Wetteraufklärer in die Zielräume. Ab 07.15 Versammlungsbeginn von etwa 1250 Kampfflugzeugen aller 3 amerikanischer Bomberdiv. Ab 08.12 Beginn der Ausflüge in der Reihenfolge: 3. BD etwa 450 Flugzeuge 1. BD etwa 400 Flugzeuge 2. BD etwa 400 Flugzeuge Verbände der 3. BD fliegen aus dem Absprungraum mit O-Kurs über Zuider See 09.00 in das Reichsgebiet zwischen Meppen und Lingen ein. Weiterflug über N Osnabrück - Hannover bis i.d.R. Stendal - Brandenburg. Hier Eindrehen auf SO-Kurs und Weiterflug über Jüterbog - Elsterwerde i.d.R. Dresden zum Angriff auf Dresden durch Masse der Verbände - etwa 350 Flugzeuge - von 10.28 - 10.45 aus 7400 - 7800 m. Teilverbände verbleiben i.R. W Dresden und greifen Hydrierwerk Schwarzheide von 10.35 - 10.41 und auf dem Rückflug Hydrierwerk Böhlen von 10.49 - 10.54 aus 7500 m an. Ab 10.35 Rückflüge aus dem Grossraum Dresden in breiter Front mit W-Kurs. Verbände der 2. BD folgen in kurzer zeitlicher Staffelung dem Bomberstrom der 3. BD bis i.d.R. Stendal und drehen hier auf S-Kurs zum Angriff auf Magdeburg von 10.30 - 10.50 aus 7000 - 8000 m. Ein schwacher Teilverband stösst mit SO-Kurs aus dem Raum Magdeburg bis i.d.R. N Torgau vor zum Angriff auf Sprengstoffwerk Annaburg um 10.45. Ab 10.35 Beginn der Rückflüge aus dem Raum Magdeburg in breiter Front mit W-Kurs. Verbände der 1. BD fliegen aus dem Absprungraum mit SO-Kurs über Scheldemündung - Brüssel bis i.d.R. Luxemburg. Hier Eindrehen auf O-Kurs und Einflug in das Reichsgebiet um 09.00 i.R. Trier. Weiterflug mit O-Kurs über Wiesbaden - N Schweinfurt - Coburg - Plauen i.d.R. Chemnitz zum Angriff auf Chemnitz mit der Masse der Verbände - etwa 250 Flugzeuge - von 10.25 - 10.44 aus 7000 - 7600 m. Restverbände fliegen mit NO-Kurs bis i.d.R. Dresden weiter und vereinigen sich mit den Angriffsgruppen der 3. BD zum Angriff auf Dresden. Ab 10.30 Rückflüge aus den Angriffsräumen in breiter Front mit W-Kurs. Jagdschutz durch insgesamt 750 Flugzeuge unmittelbar bei und vor den Kampfverbänden. 13.50 letzter Ausflug Reichsgebiet. 8th Air Force beskrev vejret for den 2. marts 1945 således: There was a cold front running east-west across southern Europe which became a stationary front in the Bay of Biscay. the stationery front curved into the north and became a warm front. The British Isles and the Continent were mainly dominated by a high. Thee was variable 5-9/10 and occasionally 10/10 cumulus and stratocumulus, base 1-2.000 ft, tops 5- 10.000 ft with scattered showers inland, but drizzle along the coast. To the south in the frontal zone, the cloud became layered to 12-14.000 ft. Visibilities were generally 4-6 miles but were reduced to 2- 3 miles in precipitation. Base weather conditions at take-off - there was variable 3-7/10 stratocumulus, base 2-3.000 ft, top 5- 7.000 ft over the eastern bases but nil cloud over the western bases. Visibilities were 4-6 miles. On return there was 6-9/10 cumulus and stratocumulus, base 2-3.000 ft, tops 7-10.000 ft with isolated tops to 10-12.000 ft in scattered rain and snow showers. Visibilities were 5-6 miles. 8th Air Force afsendte 321 B-24 og 905 B-17 fra alle tre Air Divisions mod syntetiske olieanlæg ved Bohlen, Magdeburg og Ruhland, olieraffinaderi ved Rositz, tankanlæg ved Magdeburg samt flyvepladsen ved Lönnewitz. Dertil kom så 723 jagere, der skulle flyve eskorte for bombeflyene samt 124 fly på andre missioner. Initiativen und Einzelpersonen, die mit den Betroffenen der NSU-Mord- und Anschlagserie solidarisch verbunden sind, entwickelten die Idee eines Tribunals, das diese Leerstelle besetzt. Der NSU-Komplex wird dabei als Kristallisationspunkt von strukturellem Rassismus gedacht. Das Tribunal ist ein Ort der gesellschaftlichen Anklage von Rassismus. Die Berichte der Betroffenen und Angehörigen stehen im Mittelpunkt. Ihre Geschichte gilt es zu hören und zu verstehen. Angeklagt werden die Akteur*innen des NSU-Komplexes und anderer rassistischer Gewalttaten mitsamt ihrer institutionellen Einbettung. Beklagt werden die Opfer rassistischer Gewalt und das entstandene Leid. Eingeklagt wird das Prinzip einer offenen, durch Migration entstandenen Gesellschaft der Vielen. Das Tribunal ist partizipatorisch angelegt: Anklagen, Forderungen und ein Manifest der Zukunft entstehen im kollektiven Zusammenwirken der Teilnehmenden.

F/L Smith was the Deputy Controller for this sortie and therefore the crew would have been one of the most experienced in the Squadron at that time.
