Description Ardovie is a beautiful, small country house which was originally built for Robert Speid and Christian Grierson in 1759 in celebration of their marriage and is dated on the skews with their initials. The wings, joined to the main house by curved passages were added in the late 18th and early 19th century to form the current layout. Ardovie has only ever been owned by three families and it is believed that it has never actually been offered openly for sale before now. The house benefited from an Historic Scotland grant in the 1980’s to restore the fabric of the building and the current owner created the kitchen in the former library and the bedrooms on the second floor. A classic house of its age and style and an absolute Georgian gem. There is a large utility room and on the opposite side of the courtyard is a separate office. There are two good cellars beneath the main house one of which is fitted with wine bins and there is a separate, full height, basement below the kitchen providing useful extra storage, where there is evidence an old still. A delightful pond has been created with an island and a small wooden jetty for boating and fishing and is passed on the drive on the way up to the house. To the south of the house and beyond a useful paddock enclosure with a stone ‘folly’, is the old walled garden built in 1818. The south facing site is spectacular with an ornamental pond and burn at the bottom and a small potting shed in the upper corner. Originally the wall extended up the other side of the banking with a bridge over the burn. Beyond, the woodlands spread out either side of a pretty ‘den’ providing wonderful topography for a very entertaining pheasant shoot which is currently being run by a syndicate on an annual basis.
