Report 212 - Rose-Wiles 213 - Stevens – included in Walsh Gallery Report 222 - Wissel 223 2 | P a g e Dean of University Libraries Annual Report FY: 2015 - 2016 Executive Summary The Libraries … instantiate the University’s academic ambitions and this [Strategic] Plan articulates the role we … play in the … social, moral-ethical, and democratic goods that are embodied in Seton Hall’s Mission and Strategic Plan (Preamble) Goal 4) Create and maintain a physical environment that fosters learning and research and encourages use and interaction. This has been another year of significant progress: The Libraries are in the midst of a full inventory and de-duplication of the Circulating collection and a full shift of the Circulating collection into that space to allow for necessary growth (currently at 90+% capacity) - to be completed early fall. Print periodicals have been fully de-duplicated (relying on stable publishers e.g. JSTOR, Oxford, etc.), reorganized and compacted, creating 1.5+ mi. of crucial collections space. Significant database cleanup is being accomplished in the process, making resources findable and usable for students and researchers both in the physical arrangement of our collections and in the records tracking our digital materials. We make this contribution to a collective effort also for our partner universities nationally and internationally so that Seton Hall users get high-quality service in return. We are relied upon for unique items that are our most valuable contributions: this is how research is supported now, and it is why we’ve been working systematically on the quality of our spaces, the organization of our collections, and the quality of our bibliographic information. They are all tied together in supporting Seton Hall’s academic ambitions. Library faculty members received a Fulbright award and the NJLA/ACRL College and Research Libraries annual research award. The Libraries’ Technology Strategic Plan was initiated and completed this year in consultation with IT. Full implementation is underway including approval for hiring a professional technologist position. In conjunction, the Digitization of Collections Policy was developed and a digitization grant to New Jersey Council on the 3 | P a g e Humanities on Vatican II-era Social Justice Materials in the Archdiocese of Newark archives will be submitted this summer. The Libraries’ first programmatic set of Student Learning Outcomes for Instruction, along with a rubric was developed. It is being implemented this summer and fall. The Libraries have transferred the Seton Hall University Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology into our Special Collections. The processes to clean, preserve, catalog and make it available to researchers on the web and for study, teaching, and scholarship is well underway. The Library Strategic Plan Objectives Round 3: to May 2017 has seen significant progress (see Status of Goals and Objectives section). Working with the University registrar, the Libraries enforced department/college standards for format, copyright, approval documentation and timelines for doctoral dissertations for the first time. The Libraries and its services are used: Library faculty taught 6,588 students in 323 Instruction sessions; Seton Hall University Libraries borrowed (for SHU users) and loaned (for the scholarly community) about 18,000 items through Interlibrary loan services combined; gate count was about 600,00 visits while use of print materials was about 45,000 items (in-house was 13% of the total); the Library again remained open during serious winter weather; and group study room use again rose to just below 14,000 uses, with the program of 8 hour access to them during the 24/7 Finals made permanent. There were a number of personnel developments this year: Professor R. Stern retired in May 2016 after 33 years of service to Seton Hall University Libraries; Mr. Len Iannaccone resigned his position as Records Management Clerk in March 2016, and Ms. Marilyn Shemaly-Turner resigned her Weekend Circulation Clerk position in September of 2015. Recognizing that there are a number of amateur historians who can make significant contributions to the field of local Catholic history, the Commission is pleased to offer a guide to assist them in doing just that. Getting started in a local history project is a challenge unto itself, and very different from the history projects that researchers may have done in school. This book was written based on input from the members of both the New Jersey Catholic Historical Commission and the Diocese of Metuchen Historical Records Commission. The goal was to gather in one place all the advice, guidance, and collective experience of the 200-plus combined years of academic service of the members of these commissions. The book’s unofficial subtitle, Everything We Wish We Knew Before Starting Our First Catholic His- tory Project, is a most apt one as we tried to embody in one short volume all the infor- mation, thoughts, insights, suggestions, and knowledge that would have helped us dur- ing our first time performing research in this field. His experience, writings and understanding of the Catholic faith since his encounter of St. Thérèse of Lisieux open a way for Chinese to connect the faith with Chinese culture. With his East-West knowledge, his literature presents in the Chinese classics an elegant manner. Many books were translated, including the psalms and the New Testament, which are surprisingly outstanding in terms of presenting Christianity in a true Chinese manner. FOLE Y 探究天主教與東正教新約聖經譯本中 成語的使用 堀井 [ABSTRACT] This study provides a detailed survey of the use of four‐character set phrases (primarily those stereotyped phrases known as chéngyǔ) in Catholic and Orthodox New Testament versions in Chinese. A study of this kind has never been attempted before. Ten biblical translations, both wenli and Mandarin, are included in the survey, including the recently re‐discovered Casanatense manuscript of Basset’s translation, as well as Poirot’s version—the first translation of the Bible ever written in Mandarin. The study yields several significant findings regarding the general use of four‐character set phrases in Chinese biblical translation, including their function in discourse and their modification in four different Catholic versions to better suit the biblical context. In addition, the study also identifies stylistic considerations as the primary motivation for utilizing four‐character set phrases in the Studium Biblicum Franciscanum’s version. Comparative observations relevant to the four‐character set phrases from other - 45 - 《天主教研究學報》〈聖經的中文翻譯〉 第二期 2011 年 biblical versions, notably Protestant versions such as the Delegates’ Version and the Union Version, as well as several more recent versions in Mandarin, are also included in the study. In età matura racconta di essere stato, all’età di otto anni, per la prima volta consapevole della presenza di Dio in sé, esperienza che condizionò in seguito ogni scelta della sua vita. Conclusi gli studi al Collège Saint- Joseph di Poitiers, all’età di diciotto anni Raguin entra nel noviziato dei gesuiti a Laval e dopo dodici anni, nel 1942, è ordinato sacerdote. Durante i suoi studi di teologia a Fourvière (Lione) e a Parigi, è influenzato dal pensiero di Henri de Lubac, Jean Daniélou, madre Maria dell’Assunzione, Édouard Duperray, Jules Monchanin, Jules Lebreton, tutte personalità del mondo cattolico che a quell’epoca dimostravano notevoli aperture teologiche e si interessavano anche ad altre tradizioni religiose.

SYNOPSIS This thesis attempts to trace and place in context the developing interpretation of Confucius and Confucianism propounded by the Jesuit missionaries in China during the period of the old mission, from its incep­ tion c. 158O to its collapse after the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773* The Jesuit interpretation of Confucianism was rooted in the Jesuit missionary experience throughout the world, but, more immediately, arose as a response to the peculiar problems experienced by Jesuits in the Par East from the time of Francis Xavier on. Xavier and his successors were confronted by the same pressures of language and culture that had marked and to some extent frustrated earlier intrusions of foreign religions into China- Buddhism, the Nestorian Christians of the T'ang, Judaism and Islam, as well as the Franciscan missionaries of the 13th, and 14th* centuries.
