Biodiversity of the Water Reservoirs in the Vicinity of Usje Marl Quarry S.Petkovski, (1); I.Mastoris, (2); N.B.Kormusoska, (3); (1) NGO BIOECO Skopje, Republic of Macedonia (2) TITAN Cement Company S.A., Athens, Greece (3) Cementarnica “Usje” A.D., Skopje, Republic of Macedonia [email protected] Abstract In line with the activities of WBCSD/CSI task force on biodiversity, Titan uses specific tools for screening Group quarries versus areas of high biodiversity value, like the EMERALD network of Macedonia. The water reservoirs (artificial lakes) inside the Usje Marl Quarry, in proximity with the Titan Cement Plant Usje (Skopje, Macedonia), were gradually ‘formed’ in the 1980’s, after excavating closed pits inside the mine plan area. Freshwater supply to these confined water bodies is due to precipitation and surface rainwater inflows. Plant and animal species have inhabited the area, including the lakes, by natural processes, except the fish stocking that was made by the sport fishermen employed with Usje. Currently, the area more or less resembles a natural wetland ecosystems. By initiative of Usje, and in line with Titan’s Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, an Investigation Study on Hydrology, Hydrogeology & Biodiversity was conducted. This paper is going to present findings and recommendations of the investigation related to biodiversity. Besides the check lists of recorded species, for certain taxonomic groups a “potential list of species” was prepared, as a tool for evaluation of the quality of habitats. Despite the inevitable environmental degradation, the degree to which the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and associated species have survived, even in a modified and reduced state, is surprising. -

Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

Type specimens from the collection of the polyneopteran insect orders (Dermaptera, Blattodea, Orthoptera, Phasmatodea) deposited in the Department of Entomology, National Museum, Prague are catalogued. We provide precise infor- mation about types of 100 taxa (5 species of Dermaptera, 3 species of Blattodea, 4 species of Phasmatodea, 55 species of Caelifera, and 33 species of Ensifera), including holotypes of 38 taxa. The year of publication of Calliptamus tenuicer- cis anatolicus MaĜan, 1952 and Calliptamus tenuicercis iracus MaĜan, 1952 are corrected. The authorship of the names traditionally ascribed to J. Obenberger is discussed in detail. Only the name Podisma alpinum carinthiacum Obenberger, 1926 is available since the publication by OBENBERGER (1926a). ‘Stenobothrus (Stauroderus) biguttulus ssp. bicolor Charp. 1825’ and ‘Stenobothrus (Stau- roderus) ssp. collinus Karny’ sensu OBENBERGER (1926a,b) refer to Gryllus bicolor Charpentier, 1825 and Stauroderus biguttulus var. collina Karny, 1907, respectively, which both have to be considered available already since their original descriptions by CHARPENTIER (1825) and KARNY (1907). Chobanov & Branislava Mihajlova Abstract During the revision of the Orthoptera collection of the Macedonian Museum of Natural History (Skopje) in 2004, four Mantodea and 102 Orthoptera species (al- together 1057 specimens) collected in the Republic of Macedonia were deter- mined. Furthermore, a revision of the literature about the Macedonian orthopte- ran fauna was executed and some own unpublished records were added. As a result of the present study, eight taxa are added and 27 taxa are subtracted from the list of the Macedonian fauna. Thus, the updated check list of the Orthoptera fauna of Macedonia comprises four species of Mantodea, 167 Orthoptera taxa and two additional subspecies. The study also revealed that two Orthoptera spe- cies must be eliminated from the list of the Serbian fauna. Zusammenfassung Im Zuge der Bearbeitung der Orthopterensammlung des Naturhistorischen Mu- seums von Mazedonien (Skopje), im Jahre 2004, konnten vier Mantiden- und 102 Orthopterenarten (zusammen 1057 Individuen), die in der Republik Mazedo- nien gesammelt wurden, untersucht werden. Zusätzlich wurde eine umfangreiche Literaturstudie über die mazedonische Orthopterenfauna durchgeführt, die weite- re Nachweise lieferte. Die vorliegende Studie ergab acht neue Taxa für Mazedo- nien, wohingegen 27 der für die mazedonische Fauna angegebenen Taxa nicht in Mazedonien vorkommen. Die aktuelle Checkliste der Orthopterenfauna Maze- doniens enthält somit vier Arten Gottesanbeterinnen, 167 Heuschreckenarten und zwei weitere Unterarten. -

München, download unter www.zobodat.at Atalanta (August 2003) 34(1/2): 153-165, colour plates Xl-XIVa, Wurzburg, ISSN 0171-0079 Some butterfly observations in the Karaganda Oblast of Kazakstan (Lepidoptera, Rhopalocera) by Bent Kjeldgaard Larsen received 3.111.2003 Abstract: Unlike the Ural Mountains, the Altai, and the Tien Shan, the steppe region of Cen tral Asia has been poorly investigated with respect to butterflies - distribution maps of the re gion's species (1994) show only a handful occurring within a 300 km radius of Karaganda in Central Kazakstan. It is therefore not surprising that approaching 100 additional species were discovered in the Karaganda Oblast during collecting in 1997, 2001 and 2002. During two days of collecting west of the Balkash Lake in May 1997, nine species were identified. On the steppes in the Kazakh Highland, 30 to 130 km south of Karaganda, about 50 butterflies were identified in 2001 and 2002, while in the Karkaralinsk forest, 200 km east of Karaganda, about 70 were encountered. Many of these insects are also to be found in western Europe and almost all of those noted at Karkaralinsk and on the steppes occur in South-Western Siberia. Observations revealed Zegris eupheme to be penetrating the area from the west and Chazara heydenreichi from the south. However, on the western side of Balkash Lake the picture ap peared to change. Many of the butterflies found here in 1997 - Parnassius apollonius, Zegris pyrothoe, Polyommatus miris, Plebeius christophi and Lyela myops - mainly came from the south, these belonging to the semi-desert and steppe fauna of Southern Kazakstan. -

Fennica 12: 72–77. We report observations on the larval gregarious behaviour, host plant use and parasitoids of six species of melitaeine butterfly in the Russian Republic of Buryatia. We observed post-diapause larvae in two habitats, steppe and taiga forest region. Five species were found in the steppe region: Euphydryas aurinia davidi, Melitaea cinxia, M. latonigena, M. didymoides and M. phoebe. Three species (M. cinxia, M. latonigena and M. didymoides) fed on the same host plant, Veronica incana (Plantaginaceae). Euphydryas aurinia larvae were found on Scabiosa comosa (Dipsacaceae) and M. phoebe larvae on Stemmacantha uniflora (Asteraceae). Three species were found in the taiga region (M. cinxia, M. latonigena and M. centralasiae), of which the first two fed on Veronica incana. Five species of hymenopteran parasitoids and three species of dipteran parasitoids were reared from the butterfly larvae of five species. Bulletin 14 of the European Dry Grassland Group Introduction The spring has come at last. Soon, all European naturalists will be very busy with their fieldwork. Before this happens, however, we invite you to read this Bulletin issue, which presents several interesting contributions and news on the numerous EDGG activities. The number of EDGG members exceeded 800 last month. Soon, the key EDGG events will take place - the EDGG research expedition to Sicily (Italy) and the European Dry Grassland Meeting in Prespa (Greece). You can find the most topical information about their preparation on the following pages. You can learn about the development of four prepared special issues focussing on grasslands. You can also learn which grasslands belong to the biodiversity hotspots at small scales. Besides that, you can find here information on the upcoming meetings and events, three book reviews and numerous smaller announcements from our members. Maybe you will notice that in this issue we have used some new graphical elements. We hope you like the changes! To make this and the future Bulletins more user-friendly, we have also adopted some structural changes and developed a fixed sequence of sections. The longer contributions (reports and research articles) in the central part of the Bulletin will have the structure of normal scientific papers so that they could easily be printed, posted and shared as separate items. Lepidoptera of a Raised Bog and Adjacent Forest in Lithuania

Studies on nocturnal Lepidoptera were carried out on the Laukėnai raised bog and the adjacent wet forest in 2001. Species composition and abundance were evaluated and compared. The species richness was much higher in the forest than at the bog. The core of each lepidopteran community was composed of 22 species with an abundance of higher than 1.0% of the total catch. Tyrpho- philous Hypenodes humidalis (22.0% of all individuals) and Nola aerugula (13.0%) were the dominant species in the raised bog community, while tyrphoneutral Pelosia muscerda (13.6%) and Eilema griseola (8.3%) were the most abundant species at the forest site. Five tyrphobiotic and nine tyrphophilous species made up 43.4% of the total catch on the bog, and three and seven species, respectively, at the forest site, where they made up 9.2% of all individuals. 59% of lepidopteran species recorded on the bog and 36% at the forest site were represented by less than five individuals. The species compositions of these communities showed a weak similarity. Habitat preferences of the tyrphobiontic and tyrphophilous species and dispersal of some of the species between the habi- tats are discussed. INTRODUCTION (1996).
