An approach to automatic hoverfly species discrimination based on detection and extraction of vein junctions in wing venation patterns of insects is presented in the paper. The dataset used in our experiments consists of high resolution microscopic wing images of several hoverfly species collected over a relatively long period of time at different geographic locations. Junctions are detected using the combination of the well known HOG (histograms of oriented gradients) and the robust version of recently proposed CLBP (complete local binary pattern). These features are used to train an SVM classifier to detect junctions in wing images.

This study presents the first comprehensive inventory of species composition and diversity of insects of the Reserve. Insects were surveyed between September 2011 and June 2012 to capture the end of the rainy season, the dry season and the peak of the wet season. Samples were taken from two sites within the Reserve, Dagomba and Oku using various sampling techniques including pitfall traps, malaise traps and sweep nets. Insect com- munities were characterized in terms of, 1) species richness estimators, 2) species richness, 3) Shannon-Weiner Index of Diversity, 4) Pielou’s evenness and 5) Bray-Curtis similarity.

BIOCHEMICAL FEATURES OF SOME INSECTS SPECIES POTENTIAL PREYS OF PREDATORS NADIA YAHIA1 & BELKACEM BAZIZ, SALAHEDDINE DOUMANDJI2 1Agronomic National Upper School El-Harrach, Algiers, Algeria 2Ornithology Laboratory, Agronomic National Upper School EL-Harrach, Algeria ABSTRACT Mower- net is the technical sampling used on the ground relating to study arthropoda in experimental plots, and in gardens of Agronomic National School El Harrach. Insects category dominates with 1.120 individuals (97.1%) and 55% species (94.7%).Orthoptera are highly mentioned with a number of 856 individuals (74.2%). Gastropoda, Crustacea and Myriapoda, together correspond hardly to 2.9% according to total of captured individuals. Three techniques of biochemical analyses are used in laboratory with the aim to determine nutritive values and so energetic contribution of some insects species considered as potential preys of different predators. Used methods in the present work are the Kjeldhal method for dose ot total nitrogen, Soxhlet method for total lipids and Bertrand method relating to sugars. This analysis shows that proteins rates found in different species vary between 3.5 and 28.4%. For sugars rates found, the weaker is 3.4% while the stronger is 25.5%. For lipids, the recorded contents are about 9.8 and 33.3%. The total energetic contribution brought by the three biochemical components which are, proteins,lipids,and total sugars is estimated at 4.56 Kcal by female of Aiolopus thalassinus until 13.77 Kcal by male of Aiolopus strepens.

However, only a small proportion of alcoholics develop chronic pancreatitis. Genetic polymorphism may affect pancreatitis risk. Aim To determine the factors required to classify a chronic pancreatic population and identify genetic variations that may explain why only some alcoholics develop chronic pancreatitis. Methods The most appropriate method of diagnosing CP was assessed using a systematic review. Genetics of different populations of alcohol-related chronic pancreatitics (ACP) were explored using four different techniques: genome-wide association study (GWAS); custom arrays; PCR of variable nucleotide tandem repeats (VNTR) and next generation sequencing (NGS) of selected genes. Results EUS and sMR were identified as giving the overall best sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing CP. GWAS revealed two associations with CP (identified and replicated) at PRSS1-PRSS2_rs10273639 (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.68-0.79) and X-linked CLDN2_rs12688220 (OR 1.39, 1.28-1.49) and the association was more pronounced in the ACP group (OR 0.56, 0.48-0.64)and OR 2.11, 1.84-2.42). The previously identified VNTR in CEL was shown to have a lower frequency of the normal repeat in ACP than alcoholic liver disease (ALD; OR 0.61, 0.41-0.93).

Leertouwer KEY WORDS Coliadinae, Pierinae, scattering, pterins Entomologische Berichten 67 (5): 158-164 The colour of butterflies is determined by the optical properties of their wing scales. The main scale structures, ridges and crossribs, scatter incident light. The scales of pierid butterflies have usually numerous pigmented beads, which absorb light at short wavelengths and enhance light scattering at long wavelengths. Males of many species of the pierid subfamily Coliadinae have ultraviolet-iridescent wings, because the scale ridges are structured into a multilayer reflector. The iridescence is combined with a yellow or orange-brown colouration, causing the common name of the subfamily, the yellows or sulfurs. In the subfamily Pierinae, iridescent wing tips are encountered in the males of most species of the Colotis-group and some species of the tribe Anthocharidini. The wing tips contain pigments absorbing short-wavelength light, resulting in yellow, orange or red colours. Iridescent wings are not found among the Pierini. The different wing colours can be understood from combinations of wavelength-dependent scattering, absorption and iridescence, which are characteristic for the species and sex.
