Boar Hunting Weapons of the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance Doug Strong When one thinks of weapons for hunting, two similar devices leap to mind, the bow and the crossbow. While it is true that these were used extensively by hunters in the middle ages and the renaissance they were supplemented by other weapons which provided a greater challenge. What follows is an examination of the specialized tools used in boar hunting, from about 1350- 1650 CE. It is not my intention to discuss the elaborate system of snares, pits, nets, and missile weapons used by those who needed to hunt but rather the weapons used by those who wanted to hunt as a sport. Sport weapons allowed the hunters to be in close proximity to their prey when it was killed. They also allowed the hunters themselves to pit their own strength against the strength of a wild boar and even place their lives in thrilling danger at the prospect of being overwhelmed by these wild animals. Since the dawn of time mankind has engaged in hunting his prey. At first this was for survival but later it evolved into a sport. By the middle ages it had become a favorite pastime of the nobility. It was considered a fitting pastime for knights, lords, princes and kings (and later in this period, for ladies as well!) While these people did not need to provide the game for their tables by their own hand, they had the desire to participate in an exciting, violent, and even dangerous sport! For most hunters two weapons were favored for boar hunting; the spear and the sword. -

The novel is set in Ferrara in February, 1579, an Italian city at the height of its powers but deep in debt. Amid the aristocratic pomp and popular festivities surrounding the duke’s wedding to his third wife, the secret child of the city’s most celebrated singer goes missing. A street-smart debt collector and lovelorn bureaucrat are drawn into her increasingly desperate attempts to find her son, their efforts uncovering the brutal instruments of ostentation and domination that gave rise to what we now know as the Renaissance. In the critical component, I draw on the experience of writing The Angel of Ferrara and nonfiction works to explore the relationship between history and fiction. Beginning with a survey of the development of historical fiction since the inception of the genre’s modern form with the Walter Scott’s Waverley, I analyse the various paratextual interventions—prefaces, authors’ notes, acknowledgements—authors have used to explore and explain the use of factual research in their works. I draw on this to reflect in more detail at how research shaped the writing of the Angel of Ferrara and other recent historical novels, in particular Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall. -

D. Cornell University 2005 This dissertation examines the English and French late medieval hunting manuals, in particular Gaston Phébus’ Livre de chasse and Edward of Norwich’s Master of Game. It explores their relationships with various literary and nonliterary texts, as well as their roles in the late medieval imagination, aristocratic self-image, and social economy. The medieval aristocracy used hunting as a way to imitate the heroes of chivalric romance, whose main pastimes were courtly love, arms, and the chase. It argues that manuals were, despite appearances, works of popular and imagination-stimulating literature into which moral or practical instruction was incorporated, rather than purely didactic texts. The first three chapters compare the manuals’ content, style, authorial intent, and reader reception with those of the chivalric romances. Both genres are concerned with the interlaced adventures of superlative but generic characters. Furthermore, both genres are popular, insofar as they are written for profit and accessible to sophisticated and unsophisticated readers alike. The following four chapters examine the relationships between hunting, love, and military practices and ethics, as well as those between their respective didactic literatures. Hunters, dogs, and animals occupied a sort of interspecific social hierarchy, and the more noble individuals were expected to adhere to a code of behavior similar to the chivalric code. -

Wednesday Reflection: Rabbits Over the past few weeks I have been reflecting on visitors to the manse garden, including hedgehogs, butterflies, bats and fairies. Towards evening, we are blessed with an occasional visit from rabbits. Quietly, they sneak under the fence and stand motionless, poised in the middle of the lawn. The moment the spot me watching them they dart out of sight with immense speed. What might we say of rabbits in the Christian tradition? Dating from the Mediaeval period, many churches have rabbits carved into the stonework. Rabbits and hares were often depicted interchangeably. Three hares sharing ears between them artistically represent the Holy Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There is an excellent example of this in Paderborn Cathedral in Germany. In his painting Agony in the Garden, the Italian artist, Andrea Mantegna, portrays the suffering of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. The disciples lie asleep while Christ prays on an elevated rock. The imposing walls of the city of Jerusalem can be seen in the background. Under the night sky, three rabbits conspicuously sit on the path which meanders through the garden. A symbol of the Trinity, one of the rabbits makes its way to be with Jesus; this is the Second Person of the Trinity. Elsewhere in Christianity, rabbits are a symbol of sin. In Wimborne Minster in Dorset, there are two ornate stone corbels. In the first, a rabbit is in the mouth of a hound and, in the second, a rabbit is being hunted by a hawk. In both cases, these images represent Christ hunting sin. -

Bodies of Knowledge: The Presentation of Personified Figures in Engraved Allegorical Series Produced in the Netherlands, 1548-1600 Abstract During the second half of the sixteenth century, engraved series of allegorical subjects featuring personified figures flourished for several decades in the Low Countries before falling into disfavor. Designed by the Netherlandsâ?? leading artists and cut by professional engravers, such series were collected primarily by the urban intelligentsia, who appreciated the use of personification for the representation of immaterial concepts and for the transmission of knowledge, both in prints and in public spectacles. The pairing of embodied forms and serial format was particularly well suited to the portrayal of abstract themes with multiple components, such as the Four Elements, Four Seasons, Seven Planets, Five Senses, or Seven Virtues and Seven Vices. While many of the themes had existed prior to their adoption in Netherlandish graphics, their pictorial rendering had rarely been so pervasive or systematic. -

The Rochester Bestiary is an outstanding example of a manuscript with many pictures of dogs. It is almost unbelievable that, at the beginning of the 13th century, artists could create such a beautiful and accurate work. -

The vast forests of late-medieval England contained a variety of valuable resources; some were mundane, like timber and land, and some were of a more symbolic nature like deer and the right to hunt. Control and usage of these resources was to a great extent dictated by the unique legal codes of the forests which aimed to maintain the forests to the king’s benefit. But at the same time, forests, by their innate nature, were difficult to guard and thus invited misappropriation. This thorny conundrum caused a great deal of friction amongst the inhabitants of the forest (the primary users) and the royal foresters charged with overseeing resource usage in the forest. This general discord over access to resources will serve as the point of departure for the present study. In my analysis of resource use in the forest I shall attempt to analyze the interplay of power between the various actors in the forest, namely, the local inhabitants and the foresters. -

It examines how perceptions of an ideal hunting country, and what constituted an elite quarry, altered in tandem with alterations to the English lowland countryside. The relationship between the landscape and changes bought about by the upheaval of enclosure and agricultural development are discussed, in the context of the evolution in practice and geographical spread of foxhunting, at a national, regional and county-wide level. Several long-held beliefs are challenged. The social history of foxhunting and the increased participation of both ‘polite’ urban neophytes and prosperous tenant farmers during the two centuries is compared with the declining involvement of women. The impact of hunt clubs and the rise of subscription packs in the two study areas is contrasted. The influence of changes in the landscape on foxhunting is considered alongside the reciprocal impact of foxhunters manipulating the physical surroundings to enhance their sport. A detailed study of the history of hunting and its most iconic feature, the covert, in Norfolk and Shropshire highlights the importance of landowners control over the countryside.
