  • Anti-Makeup: Learning a Bi-Level Adversarial Network for Makeup
Anti-Makeup: Learning A Bi-Level Adversarial Network for Makeup-Invariant Face Verification Yi Li, Lingxiao Song, Xiang Wu, Ran He∗, and Tieniu Tan National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, CASIA Center for Research on Intelligent Perception and Computing, CASIA Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology, CAS University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China [email protected], flingxiao.song, rhe, [email protected], [email protected] Abstract Makeup is widely used to improve facial attractiveness and is well accepted by the public. However, different makeup styles will result in significant facial appearance changes. It remains a challenging problem to match makeup and non-makeup face images. This paper proposes a learning from generation approach for makeup-invariant face verification by introduc- ing a bi-level adversarial network (BLAN). To alleviate the negative effects from makeup, we first generate non-makeup images from makeup ones, and then use the synthesized non- makeup images for further verification. Two adversarial net- works in BLAN are integrated in an end-to-end deep net- work, with the one on pixel level for reconstructing appeal- ing facial images and the other on feature level for preserv- ing identity information. These two networks jointly reduce Figure 1: Samples of facial images with (the first and the the sensing gap between makeup and non-makeup images. third columns) and without (the second and the fourth Moreover, we make the generator well constrained by incor- columns) the application of cosmetics. • 2 the Seven Deadly Sins</Em>
Early Theatre 10.1 (2007) ROBERT HORNBACK The Reasons of Misrule Revisited: Evangelical Appropriations of Carnival in Tudor Revels Undoubtedly the most arresting Tudor likeness in the National Portrait Gallery, London, is William Scrots’s anamorphosis (NPG1299). As if mod- eled after a funhouse mirror reflection, this colorful oil on panel painting depicts within a stretched oblong, framed within a thin horizontal rectangle, the profile of a child with red hair and a head far wider than it is tall; measur- ing 63 inches x 16 ¾ inches, the portrait itself is, the Gallery website reports, its ‘squattest’ (‘nearly 4 times wider than it is high’). Its short-lived sitter’s nose juts out, Pinocchio-like, under a low bump of overhanging brow, as the chin recedes cartoonishly under a marked overbite. The subject thus seems to prefigure the whimsical grotesques of Inigo Jones’s antimasques decades later rather than to depict, as it does, the heir apparent of Henry VIII. Such is underrated Flemish master Scrots’s tour de force portrait of a nine-year-old Prince Edward in 1546, a year before his accession. As the NPG website ex- plains, ‘[Edward] is shown in distorted perspective (anamorphosis) …. When viewed from the right,’ however, ie, from a small cut-out in that side of the frame, he can be ‘seen in correct perspective’.1 I want to suggest that this de- lightful anamorphic image, coupled with the Gallery’s dry commentary, pro- vides an ironic but apt metaphor for the critical tradition addressing Edward’s reign and its theatrical spectacle: only when viewed from a one-sided point of view – in hindsight, from the anachronistic vantage point of an Anglo-Amer- ican tradition inflected by subsequent protestantism – can the boy king, his often riotous court spectacle, and mid-Tudor evangelicals in general be made to resemble a ‘correct’ portrait of the protestant sobriety, indeed the dour puritanism, of later generations.

  • The Reformation of the Generations: Age, Ancestry and Memory in England 1500-1700
The Reformation of the Generations: Age, Ancestry and Memory in England 1500-1700 Folger Shakespeare Library Spring Semester Seminar 2016 Alexandra Walsham (University of Cambridge): [email protected] The origins, impact and repercussions of the English Reformation have been the subject of lively debate. Although it is now widely recognised as a protracted process that extended over many decades and generations, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the links between the life cycle and religious change. Did age and ancestry matter during the English Reformation? To what extent did bonds of blood and kinship catalyse and complicate its path? And how did remembrance of these events evolve with the passage of the time and the succession of the generations? This seminar will investigate the connections between the histories of the family, the perception of the past, and England’s plural and fractious Reformations. It invites participants from a range of disciplinary backgrounds to explore how the religious revolutions and movements of the period shaped, and were shaped by, the horizontal relationships that early modern people formed with their sibilings, relatives and peers, as well as the vertical ones that tied them to their dead ancestors and future heirs. It will also consider the role of the Reformation in reconfiguring conceptions of memory, history and time itself. Schedule: The seminar will convene on Fridays 1-4.30pm, for 10 weeks from 5 February to 29 April 2016, excluding 18 March, 1 April and 15 April. In keeping with Folger tradition, there will be a tea break from 3.00 to 3.30pm.

CONSULTING ROOM CHAT A History of Sexton Blake The legendary Baker Street detective, Sexton Blake, made his first appearance in an inelegant and nondescript short story, ‘The Missing Millionaire’ by Harry Blyth (under the pen-name Hal Meredeth) in the boys’ story paper The Halfpenny Marvel on 20 December 1893. Blake went on to appear in a handful of equally unimpressive stories by Meredeth, and those inauspicious beginnings might have been enough to kill the character at birth, had he not moved, under the title of “Sexton Blake, Detective”, to 2 the newly launched Union Jack story paper in mid -1894. Blessed with a new set of writers, and with Blake’s world expanded to take in his Baker Street base, his customised ‘plane and car, and his new assistant Tinker, the character became the star of the paper, remaining so even after Union Jack became Detective Weekly in 1933.

  • The Ethic, Phenomenology and Diagnostic of Post-War French Psychiatry
The Ethic, Phenomenology and Diagnostic of post-war French Psychiatry Thesis submitted to the University of London for the award of Doctor of Philosophy By, David Reggio Goldsmiths College, Department ofHistory, University of London November 2005 1 Abstract of Thesis The thesis seeks to examine the ethical, phenomenological and diagnostic renewal of psychiatry in post-war France. The particular focus of study will be to bring to light (1) the emergence of a psychiatric movement that was to become known as Institutional Psychotherapy in 1952, (2) the inauguration of a particular post-war clinical sentiment of sympathy, (3) and the more specific developments of the psychopathology of schizophrenia undertaken by Dr. Franyois Tosquelles and Dr. Jean Oury. The thesis is composed of three chapters: The first chapter of the thesis, presents a bi-focal analysis of a philanthropic politic characterising two significant moments of medical reform, where psychiatry finds its Hippocratic and Apostolic definition as a vocation addressing the imperial need of man. The first moment, is that of Philippe Pinel in a Post Revolutionary France, who urged for more specialised spaces employing the non-violent treatment of the insane. The second, is the German Occupation of France, where the psychiatrist's personage in the questionably 'free' Vichy South is one that is dramatic and resistant. This historical study is conducted in order to bring to light the methodological shift within the history of European psychiatry: what was the art of medicine and alienation for Pinel of the Paris Pitie Salpetriere, is extended and redefmed as the art ofsympathy and dis-alienation for those of the clinical fraternity of Saint-Alban.

  • Notes on Contributors / Remembering Roy Porter
Notes on Contributors / Remembering Roy Porter Not only was Roy Porter a brilliant scholar and a dedicated colleague, he was also a remarkable, generous and idiosyncratic individual – in fact, he was exactly the kind of person about whom Roy himself loved to write. We were all lucky that our lives were enriched by his presence. In this section, conventionally reserved for descriptions of ourselves, many of us have also added favourite memories of Roy, or moments when his influence shaped our ideas and careers. Roberta Bivins is Wellcome Lecturer in the History of Medicine at Cardiff University. The topic of her most recent book,Alternative Medicine? A Global Approach (2007), was suggested to her by Roy Porter many years ago. She is now studying the reciprocal impact of immigration and medical research/healthcare delivery in the US and UK since the Second World War. ‘As a nervous PhD student, I came to Roy via the most tenuous of connections: my American supervisor happened to know Roy’s wife. It is typical of his generosity that Roy invited me to London sight unseen, simply as a favour to his wife’s acquaintance. Dutifully, he scheduled regular lunches with me to check on my progress. Alongside the sandwiches and the inspiration, Roy offered me, in his inimitable way, a much- needed sense of belonging. One lunchtime, he dropped into his chair, grinned, and reported: “My mother has a question for you: did the royals use acupuncture?” I was surprised – but the idea that Roy’s mum knew all about my dissertation suddenly made me feel right at home in London.
