Journal of Archaeology and Ancient History. 2020, No. 28 pp 1–26. http://urn. kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-426054 Thi s is a study of 33 Late Roman and Early Byzantine solidi from the period 394-565 that are kept in the Stiernstedt Ancient Coin Collection. Th e solidi were acquired in the late nineteenth century by the co-founding president of the Swedish Numismatic Society, August Wilhelm Stiernstedt. After his death, the solidi along with 2,434 other coins were published as a coherent assembly, the Stiernstedt Ancient Coin Collection (Heilborn 1882). Th e entire collec- tion was acquired at a sale from the Bukowski auction house in Stockholm by the Swedish-Texan antebellum cattle baron and gilded age banker Swante Magnus Swenson the same year. Together with many other coins and various prehistoric objects acquired in Sweden, the Stiernstedt Ancient Coin Collec- tion was donated by Swenson in 1891 to the State of Texas under the name of the Swenson Collection. -

Det har sjungits i vårt land i generationer, och utomlands har vi gjort oss kända som en riktig körnation med stor bredd och hög kvalitet. Körer och ensembler sjunger i kyrkor och konserthus, på arbetsplatser och torg, i gallerior och på vårdinrättningar, i slott och koja... Man har uppskattat antalet svenskar som regelbundet sjunger i kör till en halv miljon människor. I Sveriges Körförbund finns blandade körer, damkörer och manskörer. Men de kan också delas in i ungdomskörer, vokalgrupper, kyrkokörer, kammarkörer, barbershopkörer, gospelkörer, sceniska körer och företagskörer – listan med nya körtyper växer ständigt! Sveriges Körförbunds historia går tillbaka till tiden kring förra sekelskiftet, då körsångare började organisera sig i regionala och rikstäckande organisationer. Manskörerna bildade redan 1909 Svenska Sångarförbundet och 1925 bildades Sveriges Körförbund av de blandade körerna. 1997 gick de båda förbunden samman. Bland förbundets främsta syften är att hävda körsångens musikaliska, kulturella och sociala betydelse. Ett unikt skivutgivningssamarbete har år 2009 inletts mellan Sveriges Körförbund och skivbolaget Naxos. Syftet med samarbetet är att dokumentera vårt svenska körliv i all dess bredd och mångfald och göra det tillgängligt för en större publik såväl i Sverige som utomlands. Under en tioårsperiod planeras en rad inspelningar som skall visa på de skiftande genrer och körtyper som finns representerade bland medlemmarna i Sveriges Körförbund. Serien – Swedish Choral Society – kommer att bestå av femtio körskivor. -

This is a study of continuity and change in middle-class conceptions of ideal manhood. My theoretical cues are the notions of the male as an unproblematised and genderless norm, masculinity as homosocial, and George L. Mosse’s use of countertypes. Notions of passions, youth, and character were important throughout the century. If young men could learn to master the dangerous passions especially in the precarious period of youth, they would develop character. If men instead gave in to the passions, they would fall and become countertypes. Meanwhile, young men lived according to another notion, that young men should have their fling. The meaning of manhood also changed over time. In the decades around 1800, manhood meant to lead a life which would be beneficial to society as a whole. Another ideal, that of the man of the world, was founded on urbane manners as a tactic to further one’s career. By mid-century, the ideal of the self-made man came to the fore. The homosocial world of business was now seen as a good way to mould manly characters. In the last decades of the century, moralists criticized the sexual double standard and male sexuality. -

SWEDEN BY VICTOR NILSSON HISTORY OF SWEDEN CHAPTER I Sweden in Prehistoric and Early Historic Times—Archæological Finds and Classical Testimony The Swedes, although the oldest and most unmixed race in Europe, realized very late the necessity of writing chronicles or reviews of historic events. Thus the names of heroes and kings of the remotest past are helplessly forgotten, and lost also the history of its earliest religion and institutions. But Mother Earth has carefully preserved most of what has been deposited in her bosom, and has repaid diligent research with trustworthy and irrefutable accounts of the age and various degrees of civilization of the race which inhabited Sweden in prehistoric times. Thus it has been proved that Sweden, like most other countries, has had a Stone Age, a Bronze Age, and an Iron Age. But there is absolutely no evidence to prove the now antiquated theories of various immigrations into Sweden by different races on different stages of civilization. On the contrary, the graves from the remotest times, through all successive periods, prove by the form of the skulls of those buried in them that Sweden has, through all ages, been inhabited by the same dolichocephalic, or long-headed, race which constitutes the overwhelming majority of her people to-day. Sweden, physically considered, is not of as high antiquity as some countries of Europe. Yet it has been inhabited during the last four thousand years, at least. In the quaternary period the Scandinavian peninsula was a centre of a glacial movement which spread its disastrous influences over Western Russia, Northern Germany and Holland. -

The Literary Journalism of Moa Martinson (1890–1964)
The Literary Journalism of Moa Martinson (1890–1964) Anna Hoyles Submission for the degree of PhD January 2021 School of English and Journalism College of Arts University of Lincoln Abstract This thesis brings to the fore the little-known journalism of the Swedish novelist Moa Martinson (1890–1964). Using a sample of 253 articles, spanning the years 1922–1960, it explores Martinson’s use of her class-based knowledge to expound her political and social ideas through her journalism. The articles, mainly published in syndicalist, anarchist, socialist and feminist newspapers, are analysed using close reading. Placing Martinson within her social and historical contexts, this study argues that Martinson’s work is literary journalism, a field where women, working-class writers (Roberts, 2012) and the Scandinavian countries (Tulloch and Keeble, 2012) are all underrepresented. In doing so, it highlights her narrative and descriptive skills, and in particular her distinctive journalistic voice. The thesis draws attention to two key aspects where the study of Martinson’s work may contribute to the theory of literary journalism. Firstly, in her deployment of the oral tradition she shows the potential for literary journalism to incorporate many of orality’s techniques as authenticating and reader-engagement approaches. Secondly, she exhibits an unusual, but powerful, attitude to literary journalism’s strategy of immersion. She writes from a world in which she has been submerged since birth: in doing so, personal experience becomes a form of immersion and her primary source of authority. In her hands, life events become a rhetorical tool to provide authority for her both as a writer and as a political activist. -

One of the three first of our living English poets has thrown the whole weight of his poetry into the revival, vvith characteristic energy, and his Sigurd the Volsung serves well to typify what it was that first drew us to the fresh ground oftered by the North to the imagination. It was, I suppose, with a certain romantic sense of the past represented by the heroic figure of Sigurd, that most of us first turned to the poetry of Norway and its fellow countries. But our interest is clearly leading us a long way when it brings us from Sigurd the Volsung to the modern Dr. Stockmann, of Ibsen’s En Folke- fiende, and to other such types of the contemporary Norseman.
