San Diego’s Sweetheart: Maureen Connolly Joey Seymour “I’ve got everything I want. Everything I’ve had, I got through tennis. It gave me a terribly exciting life. I met so many people in exalted positions. It opened so many doors and it’s still opening them. I’ve had a wonderful life. If I should leave tomorrow, I’ve had the experience of 20 people.”1 – Maureen Connolly Maureen Connolly was nationally recognized as a tennis star from San Diego in the 1950s. At age eleven, she was dubbed “Little Mo” by San Diego sports writer Nelson Fisher who claimed that her power forehand and backhand had the same firepower as the big guns of the USS Missouri, known as the “Big Mo.”2 The Associated Press named her Female Athlete of the Year for three consecutive years (1952, 1953, and 1954), an honor she achieved by developing a particularly aggressive style of play. After her career came to a crashing halt on July 20, 1954, when she was thrown from her horse, “Little Mo” continued to pack a great deal into her life. She frequently told people, “I’ve lived ten lives.” She was a tennis champion, newspaper reporter and author, wife, mother, restaurateur, sporting- goods spokeswoman, television and radio color commentator, philanthropist, and cancer victim, before dying at age thirty-four. The following article provides a retrospective look at the many lives of Maureen Sixteen year-old Maureen Connolly practices at a public tennis court in Connolly. History 1988 - 1997 1988 Final: Martina Navratilova (USA) - Chris Evert-Mill (USA) 6-2 6-3 Winner’s Prize: Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Prize Money: 250,000 US Dollar All the effort was in vain. At her farewell appearance, Chris Evert, who in the meantime had married skier Andy Mill, was again unable to pull off the coup by beating Martina Navratilova in the final and climbing into the driver’s seat of a Porsche. Like in the year before, the contest was decided by the collector of Porsches. The win this time however came a little more easily. In September the following year, Chris Evert’s career came to an end at the US Open. For nearly 20 years, the American from Florida had graced and shaped the tennis scene: 18 Grand Slam titles, a total of 157 tournament wins, 1304 match wins, almost ten million dollars in prize money all added up to an impressive career. She had also supplied the press with a fair share of gossip including an engagement to fellow tennis player Jimmy Conners, a marriage to the tennis professional John Lloyd and the rivalry with Martina Navratilova which ended in them becoming friends. They all made good stories for the headlines. Together with Andy Mill and her two children she stepped back from the limelight to enjoy a more private life. 1989 Final: Gabriela Sabatini (ARG) - Mary Joe Fernandez (USA) 7-6 6-4 Winner’s Prize: Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet Prize Money: 250,000 US Dollar The spectators longed to see the beautiful Argentine emerge as the winner - and the beautiful Argentine longed for a fiery-red Porsche 944 S2.

What are my plans for improving the program? ............................................................... 12 1 1. Introduction - What is the grand slam tennis program? The Grand Slam Tennis Program allows you to see how recent grand slam tennis champions would fair against champions from the past. You can choose from more than 90 former men's grand slam champions and more than 80 former Women's Champions. In addition, you can choose to play the tennis match at the Australian Open, U.S. Open, Wimbledon, or French Open. International tennis matches can also be played, with the option of choosing from many countries around the world. The program is perfect for simulating individual match ups or holding an entire tournament. This is not video graphic game. It is a statistical game based on each former tennis player’s historical success in playing major grand slam singles events. While some players have a higher probability of success, their performance in any particular tournament is still subject to the laws of random probability. For example, a player who has had major success in the French Open is likely to do well in the French Open, but could still lose to a player who has had less historical success in the French Open.
