Settrington Village Welcome & Information Pack – 2020 Settrington Village Welcome & Information Pack – 2020 This is the latest update of the original Information Folder which the Parish Council endorsed in April 2012 under the Neighbourhood Watch ‘banner’. It has since been adopted by the Parish Council. It is hoped that both new and existing residents will find the contents to be a useful reference. If you feel that in producing this Pack we have overlooked the inclusion of something which would be of useful general interest, we would welcome your feedback. Every organisation in the parish has, we hope, been invited to include its information sheet. It consists of 9 members who are elected every four years. It is responsible for such matters as village street lighting, grass-cutting and Settrington Beck, and for liaison with other statutory bodies such as Ryedale District Council, NYCC Highways, etc. Ryedale District Council consults the Parish Council with regard to planning, etc. matters, however the latter can only advise; decisions rest with the District Council. Meetings of the Council are held regularly; anyone may attend them. The Agenda and Minutes are posted on the Parish Council Notice Board and on the village website; the annual accounts, which show how the local precept is utilised, are available for scrutiny after having been audited. Settrington Neighbourhood Watch John Harrison is the central coordinator and the Harrison Hire & Sales (HHS) office is the coordination centre, where residents can call or ring (Tel: 01944 768441) if they have something to report, or ask for information on anything concerning the village. Information received from the police about happenings in the area, is posted on the Parish Council Notice Board, situated next to the School. To report anything suspicious to the Police, Telephone 101 and ask for the Community Support Officer, PCSO 5654 Katie Woodhouse. NW Coordinators will deliver Parish Council Welcome/ Information Packs to new residents, and window or Postbox stickers as required. It is hoped that this will enable newcomers to know more about what is happening in the village. If you are lonely, please contact your local coordinator, who will help and keep in touch with you. Both indoor and outdoor events can be catered for, with ample parking, open recreation space with sports pitches and a small playground. For hire within the hall (either individually, or as the whole building), there is the large main room and a smaller committee room and kitchen, both of which have been recently refurbished. The kitchen is equipped with a large 5 ring electric range cooker, small fridge, cutlery and crockery. Tables and chairs are also available separately to hire for your own use at home. If you are interested in booking the hall, please contact Pauline Durant (Treasurer) to confirm availability and costs on 01944 768284 If you would like to see around the Village Hall or are interested in joining the Committee, please contact Rosemary Mitchell (Chair) on 01944 768407. See elsewhere in this folder for contact details: Mothers and Toddlers Settrington and District Village Group Pilates Tennis Bowls Cricket Scouts 8 6 - Settrington Village Design Statement This document started life at the turn of the century as a 'Parish Plan', setting out to answer as a village community three simple questions: 1. Where have we come from? 2. Where are we now? 3. Where are we going? To examine the issues presented by items 2 and 3, five community working groups were established to review, record and make recommendations on: a) Landscape, ecology, trees, etc. b) Roads, footpaths, verges, ditches, boundary walls, fences. etc. c) Road signs & names, addresses, overhead cables, streetlights, etc. d) Recreation, sports and play areas e) Building appraisal and guidelines, future developments, etc. The contents of the current document, which was formally adopted by Ryedale District Council in September 2013 and is published on the village website, are largely the fruits of the working of those groups. However, whilst this document retains the basic 'three questions' objective, in order to achieve the purpose of a Village Design Statement (VDS), its emphasis shifted somewhat towards the purpose of the third question, 'Where are we going?'.

    EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE HEARTH TAX ASSESSMENT MICHAELMAS 1672 by David and Susan Neave 1. INTRODUCTION This volume comprises the hearth tax returns for the historic East Riding of Yorkshire and the town and county of Hull.1 The East Riding, the smallest of the three Yorkshire ridings, covers some 750,000 acres (303,750 hectares). It is almost totally bounded by water with the Humber estuary to the south, the North Sea to the east, and the river Ouse to the west and south and river Derwent to the north. The boundary, around 200 miles in length, is only land- based for seven miles between York and Stamford Bridge and eight miles between Binnington Carr and North Cliff, Filey (Map 1).2 Hull, more correctly Kingston-upon-Hull, stands at the confluence of the river Hull and the Humber estuary. The riding divides into four main natural regions, the Yorkshire Wolds, Holderness, the Vale of York, and the Vale of Pickering (Map 2). The Yorkshire Wolds, a great crescent of chalk stretching from the Humber to the coast at Flamborough Head, is the most distinctive relief feature of the region. Essentially a high tableland of gently rolling downs dissected by numerous steep-sided dry valleys it reaches a maximum height of around 808 feet (246 metres) above sea-level near Garrowby Hill. At the coast the chalk cliffs rise up to 400 feet (120 metres). Along the western edge of the Wolds are the Jurassic Hills, a narrow band of limestone that broadens out to the north to form an area of distinctive scenery to the south of Malton.

    1 Cause Papers in the Diocesan Courts of the Archbishopric of York, 1300–1858 Editing and Standardisation in the Cause Papers Database The Cause Papers project provided an on-line searchable catalogue of more than 13,000 cause papers relating to cases heard between 1300 and 1858 in the Church Courts of the diocese of York, the original records for which are held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York. The project aimed to pioneer a new standard of excellence in data accuracy and standardization. Cataloguing such a large and varied number of records posed numerous challenges in these areas, including the problem of how to incorporate spelling and language variations of surname and place names. The following document provides information on the methods used by the project team in compiling, editing and standardizing the data. Possible Origins Of Layouts. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF BUILDING This is a building constructed using local stone with a welsh slate roof covering. It has a main two-storey range, a single storey platform range, a two-storey wing attached to the main range and a service yard. It has a polite Italianate façade on the road and railway faces, which are the public faces, finished using high quality stonework. The less public faces are finished using a coarser grained stone. SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS This building is typical of the wayside stations built during the railway mania of the middle and late 19th Century. Castle Howard Station House is different from the other wayside stations in the way it was finished. This is believed to have been an effort to impress the Earl of Carlisle who used the station as his railhead; the land on which the station stands was originally purchased from the Castle Howard Estate.
