Through these characters, I get the impression that the author is wrestling with his own reasons for writing about the blood feuds and expressing some of his conflicting feelings. But those stories were locked deep within them. It was spread mainly in the mountainous North of the country where foregners and their laws could not enter. Perhaps this is Kadare's point. Culture is a broad topic and, thanks to a process called enculturation, it is very difficult not to judge other cultures through reference to what is usual in your own culture. Sort order. The Charter of Paris for a New Europe also known as the Paris Charter was signed in by 34 participating nations — including every European country except Albania. Gjorg has just murdered a man as part o So like pretty much everyone else, I read this book as part of my reading around the world challenge for Albania. Searching the archives in the castle, Mark consults The Blood Book , a long record of the killings across the High Plateau. At first, I believed I was reading only a historical fiction novel about the culture of Albania that existed long ago in the past, and later, as I progressed deeper into the story of 'Broken April', I thought maybe it was also a symbolic folktale of Albania because of the novel's literary architecture. Focusing on Gjorg, caught in the relentless cycle of retaliatory killing, and newlyweds Bessian and Diana, who are exploring the Albanian High Plateau on their honeymoon, it reveals and 'explains' the blood feud system entrenched in the lives of the people. The person who died could be a total stranger who was a temporary guest of a villager, like a thirsty traveler stopping to ask for a drink of water, who then was attacked by an unknown robber after leaving the village. He thinks he's headed the wrong way, a mistake which could cost him everything with his life hanging in the balance. Reading this book, it's like the land that time forgot because you're never quite sure where you are in history. Instead, I learned that Kadare's story about the early 20th-century Albanian mountain and village people of the past is a real-life culture of people who still live outside of the legal governmental framework of Albania as if they were in the midst of the Middle Ages and not part of the 21st century. Two story threads which meet but in an unsatisfying way, a land where blood vendettas between families last for centuries, people are travelling by coach, but it doesn't seem like another century, just a palce where progress has forgotten to arrive. Mark Ukacierra , an uneducated steward at the castle of Orosh, patrols the library in the early morning. I struggled with the story, with a story line that was intriguing, but bloody. If there is a death in the family the marriage will continue. Two destinies intersect in Broken April. Kadare writes about the Albanian feudal set of laws, Kanun, it's hard to understand that this exists in a modern world. Kadare is the winner of the inaugural Man Booker International Prize Remote Albania still lives under its tenets in the present. Kadare became famous internationally when his novel, The General of the Dead Army, was published in France. After shooting his brother's killer, young Gjorg is entitled to thirty days' grace - not enough to see out the month of April. For a striking majority of Italians, contemporary Albania is a God-forsaken country, a place good for ruffians, pimps, prostitutes and hosting bogus universities where our dull politicians get their fake degrees. It makes the American west of the s seem very tame, the Levitical law lenient. Kadare wrote this novel in part to illuminate aspects of Albanian society that were still governed by the customary Code called the Kanun. That momentary vision of the hapless murderer provokes in her a violent act of revulsion and contrition. They live in fortresses and collect money in the names of people dying, only because they are the so called gate-keeper of the Kanun. The bridegroom, a writer, is fascinated by the blood feud culture, and sees it as material for future work, but his bride is understandably horrified. It is also a huge political question. Exhibitionism: Art in an Era of Intolerance. Paperback , New Edition , pages. No, never happened! Overview Two destinies intersect in Broken April. Anticipating paying the tax upon his arrival and returning back to his village the next day, he is surprised to discover several young men, all wearing the symbolic black armband of the gjaks ritual killers waiting to make their own payments. You know the saying: There's no time like the present I'd like to listen more of it. I read the ending twice and it just didn't happen. I found it very interesting that this rule allowed the fields to be fallow while the hunted men hide. I'm not oversaturating my But I failed to achieve that in this book solely because I can never connect with murdering a human or find any kind of humanity in a culture that has a whole set of law and regulations Kanun which encourages blood feuds and you can actually be excommunicated or killed if you do not take revenge. And although turning the other cheek seems equally absurd, I think there is more to it than that. As a reader who gets easily distracted, "Broken April" meant an unusual business to me: this book "Broken April" is a haunting story with an out of time charm. Javascript is not enabled in your browser. Sadly, they're all true. Of course, Kadare is trying to reveal something about Albanian culture, and blood feuds, ritual revenge, and the narrowness of this patriarchal society are all criticised by Kadare. There is a haunting atmosphere to Broken April , especially as we follow Gjorg around. Broken April Writer Two destinies intersect in Broken April. Voicing the stories of the excluded: Albanian families’ history and heritage making at the crossroads of new and old homes Eleni Vomvyla UCL Institute of Archaeology Thesis submitted for the award of Doctor in Philosophy in Cultural Heritage 2013 Declaration of originality I, Eleni Vomvyla confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signature 2 To the five Albanian families for opening their homes and sharing their stories with me. 3 Abstract My research explores the dialectical relationship between identity and the conceptualisation/creation of history and heritage in migration by studying a socially excluded group in Greece, that of Albanian families. Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.

HONOR CRIMES OF WOMEN IN ALBANIAN SOCIETY BOUNDARY DISCOURSES ON “VIOLENT” CULTURE AND TRADITIONS By Armela Xhaho Submitted to Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfillment for the degree of Master of Arts in Gender Studies Supervisor: Professor Andrea Krizsan Second Reader: Professor Eva Fodor CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2011 Abstract In this thesis, I explore perceptions of two generations of men on the phenomenon of honor crimes of women in Albanian society, by analyzing in particular discourses on cultural and regional boundaries in terms of factors that perpetuate crimes in the name of honor. I draw on the findings from 24 in depth interviews, respectively 17 interviews with two generations of men who have migrated from remote villages of northern and southern Albania into periphery areas of Tirana and 7 interviews with representatives of key institutional authorities working in the respective communities. The conclusions reached in this study based on the perceptions of two generations of men in Albania suggest that, the ongoing regional discourses on honor crimes of women in Albanian society are still articulated by the majority of informants in terms of “violent” and “backward” cultural traditions, by exonerating the perpetrators and blaming the northern culture for perpetuating such crimes. However, I argue that the narrow construction on cultural understanding of honor crimes of women fails to acknowledge the gendered aspect of violence against women as a universal problem of women’s human rights across different cultures. CEU eTD Collection i Acknowledgements First of all, I would like to acknowledge my supervisor Professor Andrea Krizsan for all her advices and helpful comments during the whole period of thesis writing.

  • THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE of RAZËM Figure II-0.1 – Razëm on the Map of Albania
PART II THE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE OF RAZËM Figure II-0.1 – Razëm on the map of Albania. CHAPTER II.0 General overview Villages Administrative Administrative Municipality Region Units Offices Vrith-Razëm Shkrel Koplik Malësi e Madhe Shkodër Razëm is a hamlet of the mountain village of Vrith, which is only 4 km away (Fig. II-0.1). After the administrative reform in 2015, Vrith became part of Malësi e Madhe, the northernmost of the Albanian municipalities and as such, a border place. This pe- culiar geographic location – mountainous isolation on the one hand, and the constant threat from neighbouring nations on the other – also resulted in the creation and de- velopment of specific social and cultural phenomena. Two examples worth mention- ing are the traditional rhapsodic chants based on the Eposi i Kreshnikëve1 (a cultural heritage of inestimable value) and the celebrated collection of customary laws gath- ered in the Kanun code2. Razëm lies within the Regional Natural Park of Shkrel (established as a protected area in 2014) and is considered the ‘gateway’ to the Western Albanian Alps. Together with the villages of Reç e Bogë, Razëm forms a triad of great interest from the point of view of tourism (Figs. II-0.2 and II-0.3). The Alpine area on which it stands is characterised by a vast network of trails and a series of high-altitude pastures (bjeshkë) with numerous mountain hut settlements 1 The chants of the oral tradition collected in the Epos narrate stories inspired by the wars against the enemies who came from beyond the Serbian border.

  • Feud Narratives: Contemporary Deployments of Kanun in Shala Valley, Northern Albania
Mentor Mustafa and Antonia Young: Feud narratives: contemporary deployments of kanun in Shala Valley, northern Albania Feud narratives: contemporary deployments of kanun in Shala Valley, northern Albania Mentor Mustafa Boston University, [email protected] and Antonia Young University of Bradford, [email protected]. ABSTRACT The Albanian blood feud (gjakmarrja) is here documented through survey data and oral narratives of feud incidents in order to assess how these conflicts are initiated, the chro- nological sequence of events that involve the victim, the perpetrator and corresponding kin-groups along with parties involved in the mediation of the feud and the intervention strategies that are practised, and how these are informed by multiple understandings of customary law. Within an honour-driven context, gjakmarrja is a way of redressing the loss of an individual’s or family’s honour (nder). In a context where individual actors and kin-groups accumulate a feud performance history, blood feud regulates the flow of public insults upon individuals’ and kin-groups’ moral and social worth in both private and public domains. Our data further suggest that diverse understandings of the traditional law locally known as kanun inform feud relations. Enactment and re-enactment proce- dures do not always culminate in settlement of feuds. Instead, various interpretations of customary law often serve as a justification of and sometimes a catalyst for more feuds. Operating alongside, and often in opposition to, state and transnational legal frameworks such as human rights legislation, customary law and its diverse local manifestations may facilitate rather than deter the intergenerational persistence of blood feud conflicts.

  • Kanun of Leke Dukagjini Customary Law of Northern Albania
European Scientific Journal October 2015 edition vol.11, No.28 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 KANUN OF LEKE DUKAGJINI CUSTOMARY LAW OF NORTHERN ALBANIA Arben Cara Lecturer in the Faculty of Political-Juridical Sciences, “Aleksander Moisiu” University of Durres, Republic of Albania Mimoza Margjeka Judge in the first instance of Durres’ Court, Republic of Albania Abstract The Kanun of Lek Dukagjini as the customary law of Northern Albania is the most unique aspect of this Albanian part of society. This Kanun sets up the rules, upon which the culture is based, focusing on the concepts of honor, like hospitality and besa, and the topmost of the society, is Family. This ancient legal code defines the Albanian character, even today. It prevented assimilation throughout history, and continues to do so. The Kanun of Leke Dukagjini is the most distinguishing feature of the Albanian culture. The preservation of customary law was one of the most important elements in helping the Albanian people to maintain their individuality under Ottoman domination. The Code of Lek Dukagjini is the body of “customary law" under which Albanians, particularly the northern clans, have conducted their lives. Not only did the Common Law provide enforceable legal mechanisms which ensured a relatively normal evolution of society and the normality of the economy, social and family relations, it also provided mechanisms for organizing local government and for the settlement of disputes. This therefore constitutes the main aim of this study. Keywords: Kanun, customary law, Albania north, self government, sacred values Introduction Albanian culture has been strong enough to resist assimilation by others even though Albania occupies a strategic location, historically and politically.
