"She was famous during her life almost as much for her ethereal beauty and personality as for her melodious, sensuous poetry." <b>Family and Childhood</b> Elinor Wylie was born Elinor Morton Hoyt in Somerville, New Jersey, into a socially prominent family. Her grandfather, Henry M. Hoyt, was a governor of Pennsylvania. Her aunt was Helen Hoyt, a minor poet. Her parents were Henry Martyn Hoyt, Jr., who would be United States Solicitor General from 1903 to 1909; and Anne Morton McMichael (born July 31, 1861 in Pa.). Their other children were: Henry Martyn Hoyt (May 8, 1887 in Pa. – 1920 in New York City) who married Alice Gordon Parker (1885–1951) Constance A. Hoyt (May 20, 1889 in Pa. – 1923 in Bavaria, Germany) who married Ferdinand von Stumm-Halberg on March 30, 1910 in Washington, D.C. Morton McMichael Hoyt (born April 4, 1899 in Washington, D.C.), three times married and divorced Eugenia Bankhead, known as "Sister" and sister of Tallulah Bankhead Nancy McMichael Hoyt (born October 1, 1902 in Washington, D.C) romance novelist who wrote Elinor Wylie: The Portrait of an Unknown Woman (1935). She married Edward Davison Curtis; they divorced in 1932. Elinor was educated at Miss Baldwin's School (1893–97), Mrs. Flint's School (1897–1901), and finally Holton-Arms School (1901–04). -

2020 Brunner Award Recipient ELANA ABRAMS ACLU Summer Internship Elana Abrams is currently a junior at Bronx Science and is dedicated to creating a more inclusive and accepting environment, whether that be in school or in her larger community. She is immersed in social activism and enjoys taking part in and facilitating dialogue. She is involved in a diverse array of activities in which she has taken on leadership roles. Elana is a part of Bronx Science’s student government, senate, national honors society, and speech and debate team and is the president of her youth group. She is an Anti-Defamation League certified peer trainer and a founding member of Bronx Science’s equity team. She was also a member of the National Organization for Women. She is creative and her desire to create has led to her passion for painting, playing the guitar, and writing. Elana is unafraid to speak her mind and enjoys discussing politics with people who have opposing views. This, coupled with her desire to create a more equitable society, has led to her involvement in politics, specifically through the ACLU National Advocacy Institute. Through her involvement with the ACLU, she hopes to learn more about the inner workings of professional social activists, politicians, and lawyers as well as create meaningful relationships with people who share her goals and aspirations. In the long term, Elana wants to have a role in politics through the fourth branch of government, as believed to be by Thomas Jefferson: the media. Elana will be attending ACLU’s Summer Intensive virtually, where she will work with lawyers, lobbyists and activists to gain real-world experience in social justice. -

Call Me Queer: Queer theory and the Soundtrack of Call Me by Your Name Zora van Harten 4246551 dr. Floris Schuiling bachelor thesis MU3V14004 Musicology University of Utrecht Word count: 5559 Introduction In a culture that classifies the world through binary categories, entities that fall in between those 1 categories are often subjected to fear and anxiety. It is therefore no surprise that two subjects as fluid, undefinable and abstract as music and queer identities both have been occupying 2 controversial positions within Western history. Remarkably, both these subjects are central to the critically acclaimed film Call Me by Your Name. The film, directed by Italian director Luca Guadagnino, is part of his so-called “desire” film trilogy, together with earlier films Il Sono L’Amore (2009) and A Bigger Splash (2015). It tells the story of a summer romance between a seventeen year old boy called Elio, and Oliver, a twenty-eight year old scholar who is invited to work on his doctoral thesis while staying in Elio’s parents’ summer house in Italy. Its narrative features a nuanced and fluid, and therefore queer conception of desire and sexuality; the characters stay out of defined categories through the ambiguous meaning of the film’s dialogue and their sexual identities. In this film, music takes on a remarkable position. Elio uses music to express the multiple outlets regarding his desire for Oliver. Moreover, the songs, and piano works of the soundtrack are often combined with the relatively loud presence of sounds such as the movement of water, crickets or the wind rushing through the trees which could point towards a more affective experience of sound for the audience. -

Courtesy ofthe Berg Collection, New York Public l ibrary 28 Elinor Wylie's Mount Desert Island Retreat Car/Little The Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (1 792-1822) once voiced a desire to withdraw from the world with two yo ung girls, four or five years old, whom he would watch over as if he were their fa ther. In some sequestered spot, he would direct their education and observe the "impress ions of the world . upon the mind when it has been ve iled from human prejudice." 1 It was Elinor Wylie (1885-1 928), accl aimed writer and an authori ty on Shelley's life and writings, who conducted the poet's unusual social experiment in a short story published in the September 1927 issue of Harper 's Bazaar.2 The "seques tered spot" she chose fo r the poet and his pupils? Bar Island in the mouth of Somes H arbor. Wylie's fa nciful tale, titled ''A Birthday Cake for Lionel," opens this way: "It was the fo urth of August in the year 1832, and upon the ro und piney islet whi ch li es at the head of Somes' So und two little girls were engaged in icing a birthday cake."3 Artemis and Jezebel are making the cake fo r fo rty-year-old Li onel Anon, aka Percy Bysshe Shelley, who is away that day "fi shing the deep waters pas t Little C ranberry"-a long row even for the most hale of Romantic poets. -

Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12. -

In an era defined by its novel feats of poetic ambition, modernist sentimental poetry seems inexplicably to regress to the familiar forms and feelings of the nineteenth century. Alongside the modernist proliferation of “new” poetic forms, modernist sentimental poetry has thus been seen as decidedly “old”: an atavistic remnant of an earlier time and place, out of sync with high modernism’s progressive aesthetic vision. This is a foundational rift, which continues to divide the field of poetic modernism. Poets like T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and H.D. are routinely credited with formal theories of poetic innovation. In stark contrast, the so-called “sentimental” poets who comprise this study, figures such as Edna St. Vincent Millay, Sara Teasdale, Genevieve Taggard, and Louise Bogan, have been categorized as conventional lyric poets.
