To ask other readers questions about Yeah! Refresh and try again. Most troubling, though, is Stanley's sometimes patronizing attitude towards women and people of colour. AM mainstream radio stations of the day ignored the vacant channels on the newer FM band. The shelves of libraries are well stocked with chunky hardbacks about the legends of rock, the story of the blues and the significance of jazz, but pop - the very stuff that turned most of us onto music in the first place - is seriously under represented.

As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG’s and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band.

    “Between the Creeks” Gwen Pettit This is a compilation of weekly newspaper columns on local history written by Gwen Pettit during 1986-1992 for the Allen Leader and the Allen American in Allen, Texas. Most of these articles were initially written and published, then run again later with changes and additions made. I compiled these articles from the Allen American on microfilm at the Allen Public Library and from the Allen Leader newspapers provided by Mike Williams. Then, I typed them into the computer and indexed them in 2006-07. Lois Curtis and then Rick Mann, Managing Editor of the Allen American gave permission for them to be reprinted on April 30, 2007, [email protected]. Please, contact me to obtain a free copy on a CD. I have given a copy of this to the Allen Public Library, the Harrington Library in Plano, the McKinney Library, the Allen Independent School District and the Lovejoy School District.     For Hodges, music's 'all about love' By Bob Mehr Thursday, July 21, 2011 Charles Hodges has seen the light twice in his life. The first time was as a 13-year-old boy, performing at his eighth-grade graduation. "The teacher asked me if I would play 'What I'd Say' by Ray Charles. I did and got such huge cheers, a standing ovation. All I could see was the (stage) lights, but I could hear the applause and the whistles," says Hodges. "Right then I said, 'This is what I want to do. I want to be a musician.'" Some 40 years later, Charles Hodges saw the light again; this time it was God sending out a signal to change his ways. Hodges would do just that, giving up his secular music career and becoming an ordained minister. In between those two life-altering events, Hodges was responsible for some of the most vital and familiar sounds in all of American music. As the keyboardist for Memphis' Hi Records house band, his signature organ work colored the great hits of O.V. Wright, Al Green, Ann Peebles and Syl Johnson. This past week Hodges released his second solo CD, God He's Able, a collection of soulful spiritual and worship songs. For the 64-year-old Hodges, the record is just another marker in a long musical journey and personal journey. The sixth of 12 children, Hodges was raised in what were then the farm lands of post- World War II Germantown. "It was just a two-lane highway out there," recalls Hodges.

Er war auch einmal mit dem Band-Projekt Golden Smog zu hören und es gibt neue Bands von ihm genannt Loose Fur und Tweedy. Das zuerst kurz als Fakten. Von TINA KAROLINA STAUNER Das neue Album von Jeff Tweedy ›Together At Last‹ ist wie ein Überbleibsel aus einer Zeit, in der die Freude Americana, Alternative Country und Neofolk zu hören manchmal fast ungetrübt war. Kein Mainstream laberte irgendeinen Klimbim dazwischen und neben Befindlichkeits- und Beziehungstexten war Sozial- und Gesellschaftskritik in Lyrics ein Zeichen für Anspruch und Niveau. Die Chicagoer Independent-Band Wilco hatte sich mit den ersten Alben in den 1990er Jahren mit Leib und Seele in den Spirit einer ganzen Independent-Generation gespielt. Entstanden aus Uncle Tupelo war Wilco immer wichtig im Diskurs. Bezogen auf traditionelles Wissen über Country und Folk hatte die Band einen ureigenen Sound und integrierte manchmal auch neue und elektronische Klänge in den Kontext. Mittlerweile scheint Jeff Tweedy teils zynisch bis zum geht-nicht-mehr und nach ›Star Wars‹ und ›Schmilco‹ mit Cover-Artwork wie ein Cartoon kam ein ›Together At Last‹. Vergangenheit ist das Woody Guthrie Project, das er mit Nora Guthrie und Billy Bragg vor Jahren veröffentlichte.
