Setting: A beach on the coast of Maine.

Two people lay sprawled on the sand, the water gently lapping at their feet. A girl is one of the two, although she is mostly covered by a cream-colored section of a sail, a broken piece of mast crushing her right foot. The young man is lying slightly above her, a bloody gash maring his otherwise attractive face. He stirs, shifting slightly on top of the girl’s hand, the movement causing her to wake up. Her eyes flicker open, and she goes to sit up, then falls back down, wincing. She pushes the sail off her, revealing her right foot buried underneath the mast. As the young man stands up, he takes in the scene before him, obvious signs of confusion and surprise showing up on his face, quickly replaced by fear. When he speaks, no words come out, so he clears his throat and tries again.

“W-w-what happened?” He has a British accent. The girl leans up onto her elbows and looks at him. A slight bruise is forming on her left eyebrow. She ignores this question, going straight to her situation at hand.

“I don’t know, but is there any way you can help me? I can’t get up.”

“All right. Hold on.” He goes over to the mast, surveying the problem before opening his mouth again.

“Ok. When I lift the - er - log, um that is, if I can lift the log, I need you to pull your leg out from under it. Can you do that?”

She bites her lip. “I-I-I’ll try to.”

He crouches down, grabbing the mast with both hands, straining to pull it even an inch off of her. The log lifts up, just barely, and she struggles to wrench her leg out. But not before his grip slips. The mast falls back onto her foot, breaking it. She screams out in pain.

“I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry!” he cries. Reaching again for the mast, he says, “Let’s try again. We almost had it before. Come on, you can do this.” She nods, and the process repeats. Except this time, she manages to free her foot. He helpos her to sit up, and she can’t conceal the grimace of pain on her face.

Tears in her eyes, she gasps, “Thank you…” before passing out. *****

Her eyes flicker open again, but this time the bright lights of a hospital blind her instead of the sun. Seeing that she’s awake, a nurse bustles over.

“Hey sweetheart. How do you feel, hon?”

“I -” she licks her dry lips and then clears her throat. “I’m OK...where is he?” She doesn’t know his name, but the nurse knows who she is talking about.

“The young man who arrived with you is in the next bed. Would you like to talk to him?” The girl nods, and the nurse pulls back the curtain.

The girl looks over, and the British guy smiles back at her. “I want to thank you.” The words leave her mouth in a rush, but he interrupts.

“You already did,” he smiles again.

“I know...but you saved me.”

His grin fades. Now he looks guilty. “I killed your foot.”

She shakes her head. “Don’t focus on that.” Reaching out her hand, he reaches out his, and they can just barely grab hold.

“You...saved...me…” The girl smiles and grips his hand tighter, closing her eyes...as her heart monitor flatlines. And her breathing stills. Forever.
