  • The Soldier's Death
The Soldier’s Death 133 The Soldier’s Death: From Valmy to Verdun Ian Germani Introduction In 1975, André Corvisier published an article in the Revue Historique entitled simply “The Death of the Soldier since the End of the Middle Ages.”1 Corvisier acknowledged both the immensity of the topic and the need for an interdisciplinary approach to its study. The claims he made for his own contribution were modest: he had done no more than to establish an inventory of questions, accompanied by a few reflections. The article was more important than these claims suggest. Its insistence upon the need to situate military death in relation to the broader experience of death in western civilization made it an exemplar of what historians were just beginning to refer to as “the New Military History.” Furthermore, in its tripartite consideration of the soldier’s death – covering, broadly speaking, soldiers’ own attitudes toward death, the relationship between military death and mortality in general as well as cultural representations of the soldier’s death – the article identified and mapped out for further study several important dimensions of the topic. In particular, as cultural history has become increasingly important, Corvisier’s attention to military culture as well as to the representations of the soldier’s death in literature and art seems particularly advanced. Evidently, many other historians have since taken up Corvisier’s challenge to consider in greater depth cultural representations of the soldier’s death. The First World War, as a conflict marked by unprecedented military mortality, has inspired a number of important histories that address this theme.

AS WELL AS A LITTLE BIT OF HOPE. A VERY GREAT NOVEL.” LE PROGRÈS DE LYON L A T A B L E R O N D E rd LA TABLE RONDE January 3 , 2017 256 pages In 2015 or so, an unexplained and still covered up phenomenon spreads among the society and throws the government into a panic. For lack of any better word, it has been called the “Eclipse”. Thousands of people – from Minister to nurse, from housewife to big boss – suddenly decide to leave everything behind, to drop it, to give up, to disappear. While France and Europe are sinking into chaos, torn between terrorism and social rebellion, Guillaume Trimbert, a weary middle-aged writer at the end of the road, is likely to be one of the candidates to the “Eclipse”. It is at least the opinion of Agnès Delvaux, a young woman working as a secret service captain. But is that the only reason why she is spying on him, ready to interfere with his private life and intimacy, thus disobeying orders from her superiors? Seventeen years later, in a remote place of the southern region of Gers, where a new civilization is born – the “Softness” –, Agnès observes her daughter Ada and, meanwhile, remembers her past with Trimbert – that man who changed her life precisely when the world was on the verge of disruption.

  • M. Maurice DRUON Hommage À Maurice GENEVOIX

D. Cornell University 2010 "After the End of the World" is a study of the poetics of experimental writing, focusing on the work of W. E. B. Du Bois, Nathaniel Mackey, Suzan-Lori Parks and Kamau Brathwaite. By thinking form as a locus of political and conceptual contestation and transformation, I seek methods for conceiving politics in literature apart from its references or the identities of authors and characters. Writing in different genres, and with different political investments, each of these authors offers resources for re-imagining community as a project, for thinking the constitution of the self and political subject, and for conceiving politics and literary studies globally. Using a broad conception of literary experimentation as writing that departs from conventional forms and conventional thinking, I emphasize time of reading, among other times. Arguing that conceptions of time tend to be at the heart of political concerns throughout the sites of the African diaspora, this project challenges those notions of black writing that rest on the binary or oppression/resistance.
