Ellesmere Light Expedition Report
Ellesmere Light Expedition Report The aim of Ellesmere Light was to make a lightweight north-south hiking traverse of Ellesmere Island. In the months leading up to the expedition my team mate Clive Rubens and I refined the plan in order to attempt the journey unsupported i.e. without food caches en route. This change was mainly brought on by worries that we would not reliably and economically be able to put in one of our caches; namely at Vendom Fiord. The upside of trying for an unsupported traverse is that it is much more satisfying to just head out with two months of food and supplies and be totally immersed in the wilderness; rather than having the deadlines of trying to reach a cache. The downside it that you have to move all your stuff at once! Now obviously one cannot carry 55 or 60 days of food in a backpack, so we planned to start with sledding over the sea ice, then put wheels on the sled and finally to cache the sled and hike. See overview map on page 5. After three days in Resolute Bay, hub of high arctic logistics, we were keen to be away. Our pilot was pretty confident that he could fly north of Eureka and land at a strip beside Otto Fiord. This sounded good, since it would get us closer to the Arctic Ocean. At Eureka the melt was well underway; all the snow had gone and there was already a shore lead of water between the land and the sea ice. -

Mr. Ekblaw, who was placed in charge of the 1916 expeditin, will present a separate report. The results of the expedition, naturally, depended upon the loca tion of its headquarters. The enforced selection of Etah, North Green- land, seriously handicapped the work of the expedition from start to finish, while the. expenses of the party were more than doubled. The. first accident, the grounding of the Diana upon the coast of Labrador, was a regrettable adventure. The consequent delay, due to unloading, chartering, and reloading, resulted in such a late arrival at Etah that our plans were disarranged. It curtailed in many ways the eageimess of the men to reach their objective point at the head of Flagler Bay, te proposed site of the winter quarters. The leader and his party being but passengers upon a chartered ship was another handicap, since the captain emphatically declared that he would not steam across Smith Sound. There was but one decision to be made, namely: to land upon the North Greenland shore within striking distance of Cape Sabine. -

An ice-contact delta at the fiord head contains two tills separated by deltaic foreset beds dated 23.3 ka BP. -
Lower Ordovician Trilobites from the Baumann Fiord Formation, Ellesmere Island, Arctic Canada
1523 Lower Ordovician trilobites from the Baumann Fiord Formation, Ellesmere Island, Arctic Canada Jonathan M. Adrain and Stephen R. Westrop Abstract: Sections through member B of the Baumann Fiord Formation on the Bache Peninsula, Ellesmere Island, Arctic Canada, contain a range of lithofacies indicating deposition in shallow subtidal settings above storm wave base. Macrofossils are generally rare, but low-diversity trilobite-dominated faunas occur in a section near Sanddöla Creek. The only other fossils common in the collections are poorly preserved gastropods. All of the trilobite species are ap- parently new, and four are formally named: Licnocephala sanddoelaensis, “Peltabellia” baumannensis, Bolbocephalus ellesmerensis, and Ceratopeltis bachensis. The species Ceratopeltis forteyi is introduced for material previously de- scribed from North Greenland. Rare additional species of Licnocephala and Jeffersonia are reported in open nomencla- ture. The trilobites occur in three stratigraphically and lithologically distinct associations, with species diversity ranging from two to four. Closest comparisons of the trilobite species all indicate that member B should be assigned to the Tulean Stage of the Ibexian Series. Rananasus Cullison, 1944, is placed in synonymy of Bolbocephalus Whitfield, 1890. Résumé : Des coupes dans le membre B de la formation de Baumann Fiord, dans la péninsule Bache de l’île d’Ellesmere, dans l’Arctique canadien, présentent divers lithofaciès qui témoignent de milieux de dépôt infralittoraux peu profonds situés au-dessus de la zone d’action des vagues de tempête. Les macrofossiles y sont généralement rares, mais des assemblages fauniques de faible diversité dominés par des trilobites sont présents dans une coupe exposée à proximité du ruisseau Sanddöla. -

Compendium of Research Undertaken in Nunavut 2004 Nunavut Research Institute 1 Foreword The Nunavut Research Institute was created in 1995 when the Science Institute of the NWT was divided into eastern and western operations. In the Eastern Arctic, the re-named institute was amalgamated with Nunavut Arctic College. The Nunavut Research Institute focuses on supporting scientific research and technology development across a broad spectrum of issues and concerns. The Institute’s interpretation of research is broad – incorporating Inuit Qaujimanituqangit, social sciences, and natural sciences. The following mission statement guides the activities and services provided by the Institute: The mission of the Nunavut Research Institute is to provide leadership in developing, facilitating and promoting Inuit Qaujimanituqangit, science, research and technology as a resource for the well being of people in Nunavut. Institute services are guided by the core values of Nunavut Arctic College - strong communities, cultural appropriateness, partnerships, quality, access, responsiveness and life-long learning.
