EMBODYING A

PROUD LEGACY

Over the centuries, the Apies River has carved a natural cutting through the Magaliesberg Mountains just north of the Pretoria CBD, known as the “Poort”. To the north of the Poort, at the heart of this historic area the legendary and ancient “Wonderboom” champion wild fig tree proudly stands. Over the years a rainbow of cultures used this area as a natural junction to meet, trade and rest.

Family Farms

1939
2018

With a very special heritage of close association over five generations and a vision for a better future, the three farms that belonged to the Rossi and Sinovich families for more than 100 years have been joined together by these two Pretoria families into one exceptional, sustainable legacy project of scale, significance and impact for its city – Rainbow Junction.

The development of Rainbow Junction furthers major national, provincial and local economic objectives. It is a catalyst project in the City of Tshwane’s Zone of Choice and within the Gauteng Development Corridor. This new urban core is superbly aligned with the national policy of Transit Oriented Development in line with global best practice. It ticks all these boxes by leveraging its unique co-location with a major transport interchange along a PRASA Super Corridor and the City’s own A Re Yeng Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system - with links to the nearby Wonderboom National Airport and direct links to the CBD and the Pretoria Gautrain Station - to embrace holistic integration with these assets and developing accessible, thrivable environs.
Some 1.8 million people live in the mall’s catchment area north of the mountain, and this niche market is currently under-served by retail. With its direct access to these new markets and the Pretoria CBD, Rainbow Junction is the melting pot of the metro’s northern and southern economies.

Setting a new trend in Africa, the vision for Rainbow Junction is to establish a vibrant urban core that defines a new type of integrated urban living - a node that is abundant with opportunities to socialise, gather, work, relax and enjoy special events.

The development responds to market opportunities and the lack of integrated mixed-use, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhoods in the broader region. A range of public spaces with varying characteristics is designed to draw in people at all times of day, every day. Each area serves an assortment of social and recreational activities aligned with the needs of the surrounding residents. Restaurants and cafés will spill out into public squares and streets that put pedestrians first, encouraging vibrant, safe and enjoyable experiences. The design centres around the bustling Rainbow Boulevard, which traverses the precinct. High-street shops flank the route’s northern village node at street level, topped with offices and residential units, all encouraging a trendy integrated ‘mixed-use lifestyle’.

139- Hoofstuk4 Die Omgewing En Agtergrondsgeskiedenis

-139- HOOFSTUK4 DIE OMGEWING EN AGTERGRONDSGESKIEDENIS VAN NOORDELIKE GAUTENG "The boots of the archaeologist, feet of clay, often appear bogged down in the reality of the past. Would that foot simply pass by leaving an empty trace or would the boots be filled with the person of the archaeologist and with the meaning of the past?" (Ian Hodder, Reading the past 1995:xiv). 1.
