Maine Geological Survey Introduction Modern geophysical equipment allows geologists to investigate previously unmapped environments, including ocean and lake floors. Recent geophysical research studied the types, composition, areal extent, and thickness of sediments on the bottom of Sebago Lake in southwestern Maine. Geologists used side- scan sonar and seismic reflection profiling to map the bottom of the lake. Approximately 58 percent of the lake bottom was imaged with side-scan sonar and over 60 miles of seismic reflection profiles were collected. Maine Geological Survey Physiographic setting Sebago Lake, although second in surface area to Moosehead Lake, is Maine's deepest lake. With a water depth of 316 feet, its deepest part is 49 feet below sea level! Sebago Lake is located in southwestern Maine 20 miles northwest of Portland and 50 miles southeast of the White Mountains. It lies along the transition between the Central Highlands and the Coastal Lowlands physiographic regions of New England (Figure 1). 'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors. -

After over a decade of growth and increasing entanglement among printers as their networks evolved from commercial lifelines to the pathways of political protest, the fissures of the war dispersed printers geographically and cut them off from their peers. Maintaining commercial success became increasingly complicated as demand for printed matter dropped, except for government printing, and supply shortages crippled communications networks and hampered printers’ ability to produce and distribute anything that came off their presses. Yet even in their diminished state, printers and their networks remained central not only to keeping open lines of communication among governments, armies, and civilians, but also in shaping public opinion about the central ideological issues of the war, the outcomes of battles, and the meaning of events affecting the war in North America and throughout the Atlantic world. What happened to printers and their networks is of vital importance for understanding the Revolution. The texts that historians rely on, from Common Sense and The Crisis to rural newspapers, almanacs, and even diaries and correspondence, were shaped by the commercial and political forces that printers navigated as they produced printed matter that defined the scope of debate and the nature of the discussion about the war. -

CENTRAL GLOUCESTER Central Gloucester is roughly bounded by the Inner Harbor, the Annisquam River, and Route 128. This commercial and civic center of the City of Gloucester, located west of the inner harbor, is the nucleus of the Central Gloucester neighborhood and the City. The central business district runs along Main and Rogers Streets and is characterized by two- to four-story masonry structures. Immediately to the west is the civic center, which is composed of the City’s public buildings, by far the largest group of substantial buildings in Gloucester. The greatest concentration of industrial buildings is also found in Central Gloucester, located along the waterfront, near the commercial areas, and along Maplewood Avenue. Central Gloucester is extremely densely developed compared to the rest of Gloucester. Residential buildings are typically single-family and multi-family structures of wood-frame construction. A fishing colony established by the Dorchester Company at Stage Fort lasted only from 1623- 1626. It was not until the late 1630s that Cape Ann attracted a large enough number of permanent settlers to warrant incorporation as a town in 1642 under the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The name of the new town may have come from the recent birth of a new Duke of Gloucester. -

D.M.A., Musicology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary diss.) Sterling E. Murray American studies is a comparatively little-researched region of historical musicology. As with any youthful area of study the often laborious and frustrating task oflaying a basic bibliographical and biographical foundation must be accomplished before more definitive studies can be achieved. Dr. Owen's dissertation contributes to this growing foundation and, thus, to a developing knowledge of our musical heritage. Dr. Owen organizes his study in a deductive manner, progressing from an investigation of the composer's life to his musical publications and culminat- ing in a stylistic study of the music. In the introductory remarks of Chapter I, Dr. Owen explains that "on October 22, 1886, an extensive fire in the central district of Farmington quite possibly destroyed certain priceless documents such as letters, diaries, singing society records, etc. Therefore, it has been necessary that this investigator base his historical research mainly on secondary sources-nine- teenth century histories, correspondence with historians and libraries, and recently published books" (p. 1). This is a supposition, which the author does not attempt to justify. It is also "quite possible" that there were no records of any importance relating to Supply Belcher destroyed in the Farmington fire. Lack of primary biographical source material is a handicap, but, in spite of this limitation, Dr. -
