American Revolution was established by the State Le stature in 1968.for the purpose of ensuring that ?n,approviate effort would bemade to create local interst in celebrating the 200th anniversary of thefounding of vr,, nation. The state commission lead to the creation of the CarrollCounty Bicentennial Commission. The first meeting of the committee, chaired by Mr. George A. Grier, Administrative Assistant to the CountyCommissioners, was held in Novembe? f9742. As a 'result ofthis initial meeting, Dr. Ralph John, President of Western Maryland College, was arged with organizing , a planning committee for localeducational units. In turn, Dr. George E. Thomas, Superintendent of Schoo's, appointed particularBoard of Education S staff members to serve on thg committee. The first meeting was held in February. 1973. In December 1973, the Carroll County Board ofEducation rdsolved that appropriate activities honoring the Bicentennialbe planned and *le carried out in the. CaTtoll County schools. Mr-. Donald P. Vetter, Supervisor of Social Studies, Temporary Co-Chairman, organized an ad, hoc committee to makerecommendations for the Bicentennial activities. The Ad Hoc Comhittee recommended, that the historical time span be designated as 1763 through 1783 and thatthe perioa' for observance AJI the schools be September 1975 through June1976. In February 1974. three Bicentennial Sub-Committees;elementary, middle, and high scllool, were appointed. Several planning sessions were heid involving teachers, community groups, schooladministrators and students. S wow 0 OR May 30, 'wmeetingoof fifteen high school- students was organized for the puroos,. of receiving student input. Bicentennial Committees also were created irJ each county school and fuhds were budgeted for a summer workshop designed to develop a K-1.1interdisAplinary guide for Bicentennial activities. .The Bicentennial Source rooks are the result"of the workshop which vook'place for two weeks beginning on July 15 1974. The purpose oi the document is to assist local school Bicentennial :committees in planning programs of celebr'ation for the 1975-76 fiscal year. The-Maryland Bicentennial Commission suggests that the celebration be organized with a three fold tbru;t: HERITAGE '76 Focuses on activities which recall our Nation's heritage and gives an historical un-spective to the Community., In the thirteerc'Driginal States,'the Heritage Program would relate more directly to.the events of the .     Vol. 2 No. 6 _____ ___________________________________ _ __ June 2005 National Historic Landmark Hopsewee Plantation, birthplace of signer of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Lynch, Jr. Hopsewee Plantation on the North Santee River is like a property on the North Santee River from Hopsewee to the Atlantic step into a still spot in history. The beautiful vista of golden river and Intracoastal Waterway, with seven tidal zone rice plantations in the green and gray of moss-hung trees give one pause and time for production. Hopsewee was built by the Lynch family between 1733 contemplation. and 1740. This beautiful site is the first high ground on the North Santee River upstream from its mouth. This site was chosen of all the Lynch property for the family home of Thomas Lynch, Sr. (1726- 1776). Hopsewee overlooks the beautiful North Santee River and its rice fields that were its primary source of income until the Civil War. Thomas Lynch, Sr. married Elizabeth Allston, of Brookgreen Plantation, another prominent Georgetown County family, and they had two daughters Sabina (b. 1747) and Esther (b. 1748) and one son, Thomas Lynch, Jr. (1749-1779). After Elizabeth Allston died (c. 1755), Mr. Lynch married Hannah Motte, and they had a daughter, Elizabeth (b. 1755). The senior Thomas Lynch was a distinguished public servant and one of the most important Santee River planters. As a prominent indigo planter, he was the first President of the Winyah Indigo Society founded in 1755. In 1751 he was the delegate elected Built between 1735-1740 Hopsewee is one of the oldest residences in South Carolina.

D.M.A., Musicology, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary diss.) Sterling E. Murray American studies is a comparatively little-researched region of historical musicology. As with any youthful area of study the often laborious and frustrating task oflaying a basic bibliographical and biographical foundation must be accomplished before more definitive studies can be achieved. Dr. Owen's dissertation contributes to this growing foundation and, thus, to a developing knowledge of our musical heritage. Dr. Owen organizes his study in a deductive manner, progressing from an investigation of the composer's life to his musical publications and culminat- ing in a stylistic study of the music. In the introductory remarks of Chapter I, Dr. Owen explains that "on October 22, 1886, an extensive fire in the central district of Farmington quite possibly destroyed certain priceless documents such as letters, diaries, singing society records, etc. Therefore, it has been necessary that this investigator base his historical research mainly on secondary sources-nine- teenth century histories, correspondence with historians and libraries, and recently published books" (p. 1). This is a supposition, which the author does not attempt to justify. It is also "quite possible" that there were no records of any importance relating to Supply Belcher destroyed in the Farmington fire. Lack of primary biographical source material is a handicap, but, in spite of this limitation, Dr.

No part of this article may be reproduced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without permission in writing from the author, Doug Massey. 1 Two Fires “I am going to set this house on fire”, the tall man said as the firewood he was carrying crashed down on the floorboards.1 “Boys, you have just fifteen minutes to plunder my premises; after that I give them to the flames”.2 What sounds like one instance of arson, is, in fact, two very separate occurrences: The first happened in the Minisink area of Orange County New York, and the second in Upper Canada, hundreds of kilometres away and some thirty-six years later. It gets stranger. Both arsonists were destroying their own property. And both were members of the Westbrook family. Father and son! On April 20, 1779, Anthony Westbrook set fire to the fortified house of Major Johannes Decker Jr., which housed his confiscated property. Branded a “traitor to his country” by both neighbours and kin in the area, Anthony now returned for revenge with the much- feared Joseph Brant. If Anthony Westbrook could not enjoy his furniture, then the hated rebels would certainly not either. On January 31/Feb. 1, 1814, son Andrew, equally a traitor in British eyes because he had taken up the American cause in the War of 1812, razed his own house, mill, barns and storage buildings in Delaware Township, Middlesex County.

  • Supply Reed and His Four Mormon Children
    1 PREFACE After writing the family story of my mother’s grandparents, Alvin and Mary Sophia Crockett, with whom Delia spent her last years,1 I have felt a little guilty for slighting my 3rd great grandmother who has the wonderful name of Delia Deliverance Byam Reed Curtis. I was nearing the end of that project when Delia entered the story, and I was simply too tired to sort out her complicated life, which contains a pandora’s box of husbands and stepchildren, so she only got a paragraph beginning with this: “Another book like this one could be written on Sophia’s family, so it is with regret that I can only give this brief sketch.” I can do better. Warming up to the idea of writing another book, I realized that my slight to her husband, Tillison Reed, was even greater—he did not even get a paragraph. I turned to his personal page in Family Search to learn more and found that 66 of the 73 memories attached to him had been mis-filed, belonging instead to Delia’s second (or possibly third, as I’ll discuss in this book) husband, Nahum Curtis, another injustice to Tillison, and one I could possibly rectify. I can do much better. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find many additional primary sources for either of them, but much can be learned from the context of American and Latter-day Saint history and the stories of their family and contemporaries, spiced with a little theorizing and some logical deductions. I was surprised to learn that three of Tillison’s siblings had associated with Mormons, evidently discovering the Church independently and at different times, and I believe that combining their stories adds another dimension to Tillison and Delia’s lives.

McCaul Esq. a Justice of the Peace of said County and also a Justice of the County Court thereof Jane Wilson of said County aged about eighty five years, who having been duly sworn according to law, declares upon oath, as follows in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of 7 June 1838 & other Acts of Congress providing for the widows of Revolutionary Soldiers, to wit. That she is the daughter of William McDowell who was with Col. Thos Sumpter [sic, Thomas Sumter] at the Hanging Rock Battle, who was also at the Battle of Kings Mountain in October 1780. She believes from the tradition of her family that she was born on the 2d day of Sept 1766 in York District Province of South Carolina. She was married on the (blank) day of February (the second or third Thursday of said month) in the year 1783 or 1784 by the Revd James McRee to Robert Wilson Junior the son of Robert Wilson of Steele Creek, Mecklenburgh [sic, Mecklenburg County], North Carolina. She was married at her own fathers house in Mecklenburg he having removed to Mecklenburg in 1783. She has no family or Church or Court record by which to prove her marriage. Williams BA, Lipscomb University, 2005 MM, University of Cincinnati, 2010 Committee chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD Abstract Since 1991 music of the First New England School has become readily accessible through critical editions. The compilers of these volumes edited the music, traced the compositional styles and methods of these composers, and documented their biographies. However, no one has explored how composers of this era edited scripture and sacred poetry for anthems and how these editorial acts might reflect the politics of the Colonial and Federal Periods. Anthems afforded composers more creative liberty than strophic genres such as plain tunes and fuging tunes. Because anthems are long, through-composed works, composers had wide latitude regarding the text they set; most drew from Biblical scripture, sacred poetry, or a combination of the two. This study traces the texts that First New England composers chose and how composers edited them for anthems. In some cases, composers employed straightforward, unedited sections of scripture, but in most cases, they or their collaborators edited scripture and drew on diverse literary sources. This study addresses such issues as musical setting, geographical locale, and politics. Included are where composers lived, what their personal religious practices may have been, and how involved they were in politics and civic activities.
