Relay For Life 2015 By Crista DeAngelis ‘15 and Gianna Bellomo ‘15 Staff Writers Do you like knowing that you’ve helped made a difference? Well, Relay for Life is the event for you! This event allows the MRHS surrounding community to come together to help fight the awful disease we know as cancer. Relay for Life is a fundraising event held here at MRHS and many other places to help raise money to fight against cancer. According to relayforlife.org, “Each person who shares the Relay for Life experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or rob anyone of another birthday”. Relay for Life consists of separate teams who raise money through various fundraisers to support the fight against cancer. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. It is an all night event where people partake in activities and walk around the track all through the night. Also at the event there is a survivors lap, luminaria ceremony, and a fight back ceremony. Hailee Kissane has participated in this event for the past two years, supporting her best friend Hannah Duffy who passed away after battling brain cancer in September 2013. Hailee said “Relay for Life is a great experience for all my friends to get together for a great cause!” MRHS organizer Ms. DelloRusso said that this year’s theme will be Disney! She said the goal for this year is to increase the registered participants by 19%, to have about 23% more teams to register and to raise money about 10% more than last year. • Loving, Black Teenage Instagram Celebrity Converts to Islam. Here's
A shape-shifting, pepperoni- loving, black teenage Instagram celebrity converts to Islam. Here’s what happens. THE STORY Summer is a 17-year old carefree black girl, whose world is turned upside down when her mother, a popular meteorologist named Jade Jennings, abruptly converts to Islam and becomes a different person, prompting Summer to reevaluate her identity. When her mother coerces her into converting, Summer rebels. But, while Summer initially resists Islam, she eventually becomes drawn to its teachings, particularly around the "Jinn," supernatural beings who occupy a parallel world and have free will, like humans. Summer soon realizes that the religion is more complex than she thought, and that people interpret it in different ways. Yet, Summer's need to be free and untethered to any one way of being clashes with her mother’s strict interpretation of the faith and causes a growing rift between them. When Summer meets Tahir, a fellow Muslim classmate who attends the same masjid, she is further drawn to the religion and especially to his parent’s fluid, freeing practice of it. As Summer and Tahir build a connection based in laughter, curiosity, and beef pepperoni, a budding sexual attraction ignites, causing a major conflict between physical desire and piety. About Nijla- Writer/Director Nijla Mu'min is a writer and filmmaker from the East Bay Area. Shakespeare Unlimited: How King Lear Inspired Empire Ilene Chaiken, Executive Producer Interviewed by Barbara Bogaev A Folger Shakespeare Library Podcast March 22, 2017 ---------------------------- MICHAEL WITMORE: Shakespeare can turn up almost anywhere. [A series of clips from Empire.] —How long you been plannin’ to kick my dad off the phone? —Since the day he banished me. I could die a thousand times… just please… From here on out, this is about to be the biggest, baddest company in hip-hop culture. Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the new era of Hakeem Lyon, y’all… MICHAEL: From the Folger Shakespeare Library, this is Shakespeare Unlimited. I‟m Michael Witmore, the Folger‟s director. This podcast is called “The World in Empire.” That clip you heard a second ago was from the Fox TV series Empire. The story of an aging ruler— in this case, the head of a hip-hop music dynasty—who sets his three children against each other. Sound familiar? As you will hear, from its very beginning, Empire has fashioned itself on the plot of King Lear. And that‟s not the only Shakespeare connection to the program. To explain all this, we brought in Empire’s showrunner, the woman who makes everything happen on time and on budget, Ilene Chaiken. She was interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. ---------------------------- BARBARA BOGAEV: Well, Empire seems as if its elevator pitch was a hip-hop King Lear. Was that the idea from the start? ILENE CHAIKEN: Yes, as I understand it, now I didn‟t create Empire— BOGAEV: Right, because you‟re the showrunner, and first there‟s a pilot, and then the series gets picked up, and then they pick the showrunner.
