History of EU-Turkey Relations1 1.1. Turkish EU membership – no topic before Lithuania joined the EU Before evaluating Lithuania’s position on EU-Turkey relations historically, it is important to note two historical facts. Firstly, Lithuania accessed the EU in 2004. There was little debate on Turkey’s EU membership before Lithuania’s accession for all the attention was paid to Lithuania’s fulfillment of the Copenhagen criteria and other integration issues. Secondly, Turkey was already a NATO member when Lithuania accessed the Alliance in 2004. Therefore, Lithuania considered Turkey as a strong partner in the security and defence area. 1.2. Building mutual partnership When we look at the public attitudes towards EU-Turkey relations after 2004, more positive than negative discourse is evident. Firstly, this could be explained by the fact that Turkey has supported Lithuania’s NATO membership and politicians have underlined a strategic partnership between the two countries. Thus, the security narrative played an important role and the Lithuanian government has also acknowledged Turkey’s geo-strategical position with regard to the whole continent. Secondly, economic relations between the EU and Turkey and the value of an already implemented free trade regime was acknowledged. Thirdly, via diplomatic channels a Turkish message has been transferred right after 2004: it is important for Turkey to be supported by Lithuania and all the attempts of support for the Turkish-EU dialogue are highly valued by the 2 Turkish people. -

Issue 52 » The New Sultan and the Crisis of Modern Turkey by Soner Cagaptay Tuesday, July 31, 2018 The failed coup of July 15, 2016 has irreversibly transformed Turkish politics. Although the coup attempt was thankfully thwarted, the path that Erdogan chose to take after the coup—using the state of emergency powers he was given to go specifically after coup plotters, to embark instead on a much broader campaign against all dissidents, many of whom possessed no ties to the coup in any form— highlights an unfortunate truth about the country: Turkey is in a deep crisis. The country is polarized between supporters and opponents of Erdogan, who has won successive elections in Turkey since 2002 on a platform of right-wing populism. Erdogan has demonized and cracked down on electoral constituencies that are not likely to vote for him, a strategy that has Image credit: Poster Collection, Cairo Punch 0111, Hoover dramatically worsened polarization in Turkey, which is now sharply split between pro- and anti-Erdogan Institution Archives. camps: the former, a conservative and Turkish-nationalist right-wing coalition, believes that the country is paradise; the latter, a loose group of leftists, secularists, liberals, and Kurds, thinks that it lives in hell. More alarmingly, terror groups such as the hard-leftist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the jihadist Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are taking advantage of this chasm in Turkey, adding bloodshed and sharpening the divide even further. Between summer 2015 and the end of 2016 alone, Turkey suffered 33 major ISIS and PKK terror attacks, which killed almost 550 people. -

Cypriot Population Turkish Is the The demography of north Cyprus is one of the most contested issues related to the island’s division. In particular, the number of indigenous Turkish Cypriots and Turkish immigrants living in the north has long been a source of dispute, not only among the island’s diplomats and politicians but also among researchers and activists. Until recently, the political use of demog- raphy has hindered comprehensive study of the ethno-demographic make-up of the north, while at the same time making a thorough demographic study all the more imperative. The present report addresses this situation by providing an analysis of the results of the 2006 census of north Cyprus, comparing these fi gures with the results of the previous census. The report focuses mainly on identifying the percentage of the population of north Cyprus who are of Turkish-mainland origin and also possess Turkish Cypriot citizenship – an important factor given claims that such citizens play an signifi cant role in elections in the north. In addi- tion, the report examines the arrival dates of Turkish nationals in order to analyze patterns of migration. This, in turn, is indicative of the numbers of naturalized Turkish Cypriot citizens who have arrived in Cyprus as part of an offi cial policy. The report also presents estimates for Turkish Cypriot emigration to third countries, based on immigration and census fi gures from the two main host countries: the United Kingdom and Australia. Following analysis of these latter fi gures and the results of the 2006 census, it is argued that claims of massive emigration by Turkish Cypriots to third countries are largely misleading. -

By 1993, W Armenian forces were in control of 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory, 1 million Azerbaijanis were refugees, Azerbaijani industry was collapsing, inflation exceeded 1,000 percent a year, and a civil war had erupted. The situation began to stabilize, however, when Haidar Aliyev assumed the presidency in 1993. The new government set several priorities: strengthening Azerbaijan's independence and democracy, ending the civil war and the war with Armenia, and opening up the country to investors in order to strengthen economic potential. > Since 1993, most of these objectives have either been met or are on the path toward being met. Azerbaijan is truly independent; it is the only former Soviet republic without any Russian military presence. In fact, there are no foreign military bases in Azerbaijani territory. The internal warfare is over and Azerbaijan now stands as arguably the Caucasus's most stable country. A cease-fire has governed Azerbaijan's relationship with Armenia for the past four years; progress was being made on a final peace settlement until the rise of radical forces in Armenia brought it to a halt. A new constitution was adopted, presidential and parliamentary elections were held, and the death penalty was abolished. Independent newspapers and television stations have proliferated. Economic development has been significant: Azerbaijan's gross domestic product grew by 8 percent last year, and privatization has been proceeding well. Most of all, Azerbaijan leads all former Soviet republics in bringing in foreign investment. -
