Uefa Europa League UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE - 2020/21 SEASON MATCH PRESS KITS Stadion der Stadt Linz - Linz Thursday 26 November 2020 18.55CET (18.55 local time) LASK Group J - Matchday 4 Royal Antwerp FC Last updated 24/11/2020 17:21CET Match background 2 Legend 3 1 LASK - Royal Antwerp FC Thursday 26 November 2020 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stadion der Stadt Linz, Linz Match background LASK and Royal Antwerp are locked together on six points as they go head to head for the second time in UEFA Europa League Group J, with the Austrian side bidding to make it two wins out of two against their Belgian opponents. • Antwerp won their first two matches in the section – 2-1 at Ludogorets and 1-0 at home to Tottenham – but were stopped in their tracks on Matchday 3 as LASK beat them 1-0 in Belgium, with a first European goal from German striker Johannes Eggestein, to form a three-way tie, including Tottenham, at the top of the group table. Previous meetings • LASK's first UEFA contest with Belgian opposition did not occur until last season, when they lost both legs of their UEFA Champions League play-off to Club Brugge (0-1 h, 1-2 a). • Antwerp's record in Austria is W1 L2, the victory coming against Admira Wacker in the second round of their run to the 1992/93 European Cup Winners' Cup final, Alex Czerniatynski scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 first-leg win. Form guide LASK • Fourth in the 2019/20 Austrian Bundesliga, LASK enjoyed the longest and most successful European run in their history last season, stretching from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Europa League round of 16. • LASK made their debut in the UEFA Europa League group stage last term, topping a group containing three European stalwarts in Sporting CP, PSV Eindhoven and Rosenborg before overcoming AZ Alkmaar in the round of 32 in what was the club's first experience of springtime European football. Eliminated by Manchester United in the round of 16 (0-5 h, 1-2 a), they are back in the group stage this term following big qualifying wins against DAC Dunajská Streda (7-0 h) and, in the play-offs, Sporting (4-1 a). Both were club record wins in this competition. • The team from the Danube city have won nine of their 11 European home games over the past three seasons, scoring 30 goals in the process. They recorded three home wins out of three in last season's group stage and made it four out of four at this juncture of the competition with a 4-3 victory against Ludogorets on Matchday 2. Antwerp • Antwerp beat champions Club Brugge 1-0 in the 2019/20 Belgian Cup final – the club's first victory in the competition for 28 years – to secure a place in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time. • Last season the club returned to European competition for the first time in a quarter of a century but were unable to negotiate their way through UEFA Europa League qualifying, going out in the play-offs to AZ after extra time (1-1 a, 1- 4 h) following an away goals extra-time win in the third qualifying round against Viktoria Plzeň. • The Great Old had not won away in Europe since that 4-2 victory at Admira Wacker in 1992 (D3 L4) until they beat Ludogorets 2-1 in Bulgaria in this season's UEFA Europa League opener. Links and trivia • Antwerp are one of six clubs making their UEFA Europa League group stage debut in 2020/21, the others being CSKA-Sofia (Group A), Granada and Omonoia (E), Leicester City (G) and Sivasspor (I). They are the eighth different Belgian club to appear in the competition proper. 2 LASK - Royal Antwerp FC Thursday 26 November 2020 - 18.55CET (18.55 local time) Match press kit Stadion der Stadt Linz, Linz Legend Competitions Club competitions National team competitions UCL: UEFA Champions League EURO: UEFA European Football Championship ECCC: European Champion Clubs' Cup WC: FIFA World Cup UEL: UEFA Europa League CONFCUP: FIFA Confederations Cup UCUP: UEFA Cup FRIE: Friendly internationals UCWC: UEFA Cup Winners' Cup U21FRIE: Under-21 friendly internationals SCUP: UEFA Super Cup U21: UEFA European Under-21 Championship UIC: UEFA Intertoto Cup U17: UEFA Under-17 Championship ICF: Inter-Cities Fairs Cup U16: UEFA European Under-16 Championship U19: UEFA Under-19 Championship U18: UEFA European Under-18 Championship WWC: FIFA Women's World Cup WEURO: UEFA European Women's Championship Competition stages Other abbreviations F: Final GS: Group stage (aet): After extra time pens: Penalties GS1: First group stage GS2: Second group stage No.: Number og: Own goal 3QR: Third qualifying round R1: First round ag: Match decided on away P: Penalty R2: Second round R3: Third round goals agg: Aggregate R4: Fourth round PR: Preliminary round Pld: Matches played AP: Appearances SF: Semi-finals QF: Quarter-finals Pos.: Position Comp.: Competition R16: round of 16 QR: Qualifying round Pts: Points D: Drawn R32: Round of 32 1QR: First qualifying round R: Sent off (straight red card) DoB: Date of birth 1st: first leg 2QR: Second qualifying Res.: Result ET: Extra Time round sg: Match decided by silver GA: Goals against 2nd: second leg FT: Final tournament goal t: Match decided by toss of a PO: Play-off ELITE: Elite round coin Rep: Replay 3rdPO: Third-place play-off GF: Goals for W: Won PO - FT: Play-off for Final GS-FT: Group stage – final gg: Match decided by golden Y: Booked Tournament tournament goal L: Lost Y/R: Sent off (two yellow Nat.: Nationality cards) N/A: Not applicable f: Match forfeited Statistics -: Denotes player substituted +: Denotes player introduced *: Denotes player sent off +/-: Denotes player introduced and substituted Squad list D: Disciplinary *: Misses next match if booked S: Suspended QUAL: All UEFA qualifiers UEL: Current season total UEFA Europa League appearances from the group stage onwards prior to the current matchday UEL: Total appearances in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final only UEFA: All-time total appearances in UEFA club competition including qualifying Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness. What happened on 29 May 1985 at the Heysel stadium in Brussels was the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions. Disaster struck the final of the Champion Clubs’ Cup between Juventus and Liverpool before a ball had even been kicked, leaving 39 spectators dead and injuring many more during what should have been a celebration of football. Whilst this tragedy could have called into question the future of the major European football competitions, particularly the Champion Clubs’ Cup, it soon became clear that defeatism was not the best way to pay tribute to the victims.

  • Kicking Through the Wall: Football, Division, and Entanglement In
Kicking Through the Wall: Football, Division, and Entanglement in Postwar Berlin By Emmanuel Hogg, BA (Hons), MA A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2016, Emmanuel Hogg Abstract Seldom is the German capital referred to as a “Fußballstadt” (“football-city”). When Berlin and football are mentioned together, themes of corruption, hooliganism, the Stasi, and scandal dominate. And yet, Berlin holds a rich footballing history that dates back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and has long played an important role in the lives of Berliners as spaces for sociability. In the postwar period, two divergent states emerged, each with their own competing structures of football. Whereas in the Federal Republic football remained an autonomous but not apolitical space, it was explicitly politicized in East Germany. As an important form of “soft power” during the Cold War, the people’s game reveals the extent to which the Iron Curtain was much more porous and elastic than the imagery of the Berlin Wall suggests. Rather than view football as “war without the fighting”, a microcosm that interprets the German and Cold War past as simplistic, reductive, and dichotomous, this dissertation analyzes the sport’s inherent dynamism that presented Berliners on both sides of the Wall with unique spaces for social interaction. Although both German states tried to use the sport to assert their own interests, this dissertation argues that football simultaneously provided fans with a relatively free space authorities could not effectively control, opening the opportunity for German- German interactions.
