Davis, PhD ABSTRACT Love & Hip-Hop (LHH) is known to be the highest rated reality TV show, producing more than 400,000 viewers on the season premiere of Love & Hip-Hop: Miami and continues to be one of the most talked about cable series across Facebook and Twitter (Etkin, 2018). Considering the demographic that LHH speaks to, 74% of women between the ages of 18-49 tune into LHH weekly and 81% of viewers are Black with an average media age viewership of 36 (Etkin, 2018). Additionally, this study explores the ways in which misogynoir is fluid in the performances of the characters on VH1’s Love & Hip-Hop (LHH) and how the characters and viewers claim agency and space through their involvement in the Hip-Hop industry and social media. This study will investigate the new phenomena of emerging hip-hop reality tv culture and its nuance in Black women’s involvement in Hip-Hop that defies respectability politics. Richardson Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089, USA Legacy media coverage of the Civil Rights Movement often highlighted charismatic male leaders, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while scores of Black women worked qui- etly in the background. Today’s leaders of the modern Black Lives Matter movement have turned this paradigm on its face. This case study explores the revamped communi- cation styles of four Black feminist organizers who led the early Black Lives Matter Movement of 2014: Brittany Ferrell, Alicia Garza, Brittany Packnett, and Marissa Johnson. Additionally, the study includes Ieshia Evans: a high-profile, independent, anti–police brutality activist. In a series of semi-structured interviews, the women shared that their keen textual and visual dismantling of Black respectability politics led to a mediated hyper-visibility that their forebearers never experienced. The women share the advantages and disadvantages of this approach, and weigh in on the sustain- ability of their communication methods for future Black social movements. By connecting the historical exploitation of Black female bodies to the way Black female deviant identities are manufactured and consumed currently, I was able to show not only the evolution of Black women’s attitudes towards sexuality, but also the ways in which these attitudes manifest when policing deviancy amongst each other. Chapter 1 gives historical insight to the way that deviancy has been inextricably linked to the construction of Blackness. Using the Post-Reconstruction Era as my point of entry, I demonstrate the ways in which Black bodies were stigmatized as sexually deviant, and how the use of Black caricatures buttressed the consumption of this narrative by whites. I explain how countering this narrative became fundamental to the evolution of Black female sexual politics, and how ultimately bodily agency was later restored through sexual deviancy. Chapter 2 interrogates the way “authenticity” is propagated within the genre of reality TV. Black women are expected to perform deviant identities that coincide with controlling images so that the “authenticity” of Black womanhood is consumed by mainstream audiences.

Gelms As our digital environments—in their inhabitants, communities, and cultures—have evolved, harassment, unfortunately, has become the status quo on the internet (Duggan, 2014 & 2017; Jane, 2014b). Harassment is an issue that disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color (Citron, 2014; Mantilla, 2015), LGBTQIA+ women (Herring et al., 2002; Warzel, 2016), and women who engage in social justice, civil rights, and feminist discourses (Cole, 2015; Davies, 2015; Jane, 2014a). Whitney Phillips (2015) notes that it’s politically significant to pay attention to issues of online harassment because this kind of invective calls “attention to dominant cultural mores” (p. 7). Keeping our finger on the pulse of such attitudes is imperative to understand who is excluded from digital publics and how these exclusions perpetuate racism and sexism to “preserve the internet as a space free of politics and thus free of challenge to white masculine heterosexual hegemony” (Higgin, 2013, n.p.). While rhetoric and writing as a field has a long history of examining myriad exclusionary practices that occur in public discourses, we still have much work to do in understanding how online harassment, particularly that which is gendered, manifests in digital publics and to what rhetorical effect.

We are all in the business of selling illusions, as we move various products—including our own sexuality—but we often stand accused of selling out. Denean Sharpley-Whiting Introduction In 2005, Karrine Steffans’ memoir Confessions of a Video Vixen debuted on bookstore shelves across the country. Steffans book was the first of its kind. She used her knowledge of privileged information contained inside the “Good Ol’ Boys Club” of hip- hop to transform herself from video vixen to a self-proclaimed “modern day Mata Hari.”2 With the publication of her book, Steffans violated an unspoken but well-known rule in hip-hop by “refusing to curb her tongue.”3 She aired her rendezvous with some of hip- hop’s power players, and she did not spare any details.

    The University of Texas at Austin Beyoncé Feminism, Rihanna Womanism: Popular Music and Black Feminist Theory AFR 330, WGS 335 Flags: Cultural Diversity in the US, Global Cultures Spring 2020 Prof: Dr. Traci-Ann Wint Course Description Beyoncé’s fifth live album Homecoming chronicled her performance as the first black woman to headline the Coachella festival. As with Lemonade, the film and performance put Beyoncé’s music in conversation with luminaries such as Toni Morrison and W.E.B. DuBois. Beyoncé’s contemporaries Rihanna and Lizzo similarly center black culture in their music and are unapologetic about their work’s engagement with issues specific to black womanhood. By engaging the music and videos of these and other Black femme recording artists as popular, accessible expressions of African American and Caribbean feminisms, this course explores their contribution to black feminist thought and their impact on global audiences. Beginning with close analysis of these artists’ songs and videos, we read their work in conversation with black feminist theoretical works that engage issues of race, location, violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression. The course aims to provide students with an introduction to media studies methodology as well as black feminist theory, and to challenge us to close the gap between popular and academic expressions of black women’s concerns. Course Goals The course aims to provide students with an introduction to Black feminism, Black feminist thought and womanism through an examination of popular culture. At the end of the course students should have a firm grasp on Black Feminist and Womanist theory, techniques in pop culture and media analysis and should be comfortable with the production of scholarly work for a popular audience.
