NORTHWEST 50 PLUS | MARION POLK March 2021 5 A Long Distance Grandparent Needn’t Be Distant A circle of life lined with love ... and food by Candy Puterbaugh Looking back over her 52 years, Kari Anderton says she was always gathering ingredients for the successful at-home cooking school, Kari’s Kitchen, that she started 10 years ago. The ingredients came from a mix of memories: . family Christmas Eve crab dinners, a tradition of her grandfather’s, a commercial fisherman . almond crescent cookies, canned pickled herring and currant jam, specialties of her Norwegian grandmother’s . homemade breads, jams, canned fruits, and daily family dinners prepared by her creative mother A passion for cooking and a bubbling personality sealed her recipe for success. “As a kid, I didn’t really cook myself but was surrounded by good food,” says Kari. “I liked the outdoors, climbing trees, picking berries and gardening. I didn’t really see Kari’s Kitchen coming when I was younger.” It all started when her two sons were in grade school. “I’d chat on the playground with other parents,” Kari recalls. “The conversation centered around, ‘What’re you cooking for dinner?’ We needed to come up with menus. I liked to cook so I started doing in-home workshops with hands-on cooking.” Up to 15 people came to Kari’s home Monday nights to learn how to make appetizers, two entrees and a dessert. After cooking, they dined together. 6 NORTHWEST 50 PLUS | MARION POLK March 2021 After three years of leading workshops for In 1998 she married Dave, a CPA, in her book groups, girls’ nights out, and corporate team childhood home. This piece is my friend’s version of life represented in Origami where 2456 pieces of small paper are individually folded and interlocked together without any glue. She folded each paper in the cab, metro, flight and train while people stared at her trying to figure out what she’s up to without even looking at the pieces in her hand. She would continue to do so even if you blind fold her. She used 33 shades of colours to ge the best Ombré of life. How life transitions from birth with a pure white soul of a baby embracing various stages and colours of life and eventually goes down to a death a blunt black reality.

In the most recent Bond films, in particular, the female characters have become more powerful than the early characters and their roles within the narratives have changed with their characters taking on stronger and more integral roles. This thesis seeks to examine the films of the 007/James Bond franchise and how the rhetoric of the franchise's costume design affects the representation of femininity and power in regards to the Bond Girls. After an overview of Bond history and costume theory, two films are analyzed as case studies: Dr. No (1962) which marks the beginning of the film franchise and Casino Royale (2006), which marks the more recent turn the films have taken. This thesis examines how the representations of Bond Girls and the use of costume design for their characters have changed over the course of the franchise from the days of Sean Connery to the recent reboot of the franchise with Daniel Craig as 007 James Bond.
