Comedian Bill Engvall to Play Pikes Peak Center Thursday, October 10 Tickets Will Go on Sale on Friday, June 14 “Here’s Your Sign” Comedian Bill Engvall to play Pikes Peak Center Thursday, October 10 Tickets will go on sale on Friday, June 14 COLORADO SPRINGS (June 10, 2019) – Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum selling recording artist and one of the country’s top comedians Bill Engvall is coming to Colorado Springs to appear at Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, October 10. Most recently a contestant on season 17 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars where his popularity kept him on the show until the finals, Engvall is very well known for his platinum album Here’s Your Sign which held the No. 1 position on the Billboard Comedy Chart for 15 straight weeks. His second album, Dorkfish, also debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Comedy Chart. Engvall was part of the enormously successful Blue Collar concert films that sold more than nine million units and received a Grammy nomination. He also starred on the WB’s hit sketch comedy show Blue Collar TV and in several solo specials for Comedy Central. In 2012 Engvall reunited with Jeff Foxworthy and Larry the Cable Guy on the Them Idiots Whirled Tour, which aired as a special on CMT. Tickets for Engvall at Pikes Peak Center range in price from $39 to $119 plus applicable fees and will go on sale on Friday, June 14 at 10 a.m. at the Pikes Peak Center and The Broadmoor World Arena box offices; online at PikesPeakCenter.com, BroadmoorWorldArena.com and AXS.com; and via phone at (719) 520-SHOW. Engvall started his career as a disc jockey in Dallas, Texas, with plans to become a teacher, however while in a night club one evening he tried his hand at stand-up comedy and found that making people laugh was his forte. Engvall then moved to Los Angeles and soon starred in a Showtime special and made appearances on The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman. Outside of the rules and constraints of serious discourse and cultural production, these comedic corrections thrive on discursive and semiotic ambiguity and temporality. Comedic corrections offer alternate interpretations overlooked or silenced by hegemonic structures and operating modes of cultural common sense. The view that their effects are ephemeral and insignificant is an incomplete and misguided evaluation. Since this paper adopts Hegel’s understanding of comedy as the spirit (Geist) made material, its very constitution, and thus its power, resides in exposing the internal thought processes often left unexamined, bringing them into the foreground, dissecting them, and exposing them for ridicule and transformation. In essence, the work of comedy is to consider all points of human processing and related structuration as fair game. The phenomenological nature of comedy calls for a micro-level examination. Select examples from The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour (1968), The Richard Pryor Show (1977), Saturday Night Live (1990), and Chappelle’s Show (2003) will demonstrate representative ways that comedy attacks and transforms racial hegemony. Keywords: comedy, cultural sociology, popular culture, race and racism, resistance. During periods of social unrest, what micro-level actions are available to the public? Or, how does a particular society respond to inequities that are widely shared and agreed upon as intolerable aspects of a society? One popular method to challenge a hegemonic structure, and to survive it, is comedy.

    Movie review: ‘Cars 3’ NEW YORK — Fasten your seatbelts and start your engines for a wild (and often ear- splitting) ride in “Cars 3” (Disney), the latest installment of the family-friendly animated franchise. Six years after the initial sequel and 11 since the series began with “Cars,” the anthropomorphic autos are back with a vengeance. Director Brian Fee ramps up the racing action (and the roar of the engines) while introducing a fleet of new characters sure to please young viewers — not to mention toy manufacturers. Happily, there’s much more than the dizzying blur of NASCAR-like action. Screenwriters Kiel Murray, Bob Peterson and Mike Rich inject a nice amount of heart and pathos into the comedic plot, and add winning messages about second chances and the value of mentoring. The years have been kind to ace racer Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson). He’s still at the top of his game. But just over his shoulder is a new generation of faster vehicles, like the brash rookie Jackson Storm (voice of Armie Hammer). “Enjoy your retirement,” Jackson tells Lightning as he whizzes past. In a flash, Lightning is sidelined by an accident. Disillusioned and depressed, he retreats to his adopted home of Radiator Springs. There he draws on the support of his loyal tow-truck sidekick, Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy), and comely Porsche sweetheart, Sally (voice of Bonnie Hunt). Sally knows Lightning must look to the future. “Don’t fear failure,” she insists. “Take a chance. Try something new.” A spiffy fresh paint job by Ramone (voice of Cheech Marin) helps.

    Legal Lessons in On-Stage Character Development: Comedians, Characters, Cable Guys & Copyright Convolutions Clay Calvert⊗ ABSTRACT This article addresses the trials and tribulations faced by stand-up comedians who seek copyright protection for on-stage characters they create, often during solo performances. The article initially explores the current, confused state of the law surrounding the copyrightability of fictional characters. The doctrinal muddle is magnified for comedians because the case law that addresses the fictional character facet of copyright jurisprudence overwhelmingly involves characters developed within the broader framework of plots and storylines found in traditional media artifacts such as books, comic strips, cartoons and movies. The article then deploys the 2014 federal court ruling in Azaria v. Bierko as a timely analytical springboard for addressing comedic-character copyright issues. Finally, the article offers multiple tips and suggestions for comedians and actors seeking copyright protection in their on- stage characters. I.     Catalogue of Photographs of Performers and Shows in the Archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation The archives of the Embassy Theatre Foundation hold more than 3000 artifacts, including more than 600 photographs of vaudevillians inscribed to Bud Berger (long-time stage man- ager at the Embassy Theatre, known as the Emboyd until 1952); more than 300 posters, playbills, programs, stools, and even guitars signed by the stars and casts of shows that have played at the Embassy Theatre over the past forty years, rang- ing from classic and current Broadway shows to acrobatic groups, choral ensembles, dance shows, ballet, stand-up comedians, rock bands, country singers, travel films, silent films, theatre organists, and so on; and hundreds of publicity photographs of performers, shows, and events at the theatre, primarily from the period following the establishment of the Embassy Theatre Foundation and its rescue of the theatre from the wrecking ball in 1975; and a nearly complete run of the journal of the American Theatre Organ Society. The archive is now almost fully catalogued and preserved in archival housing. Earlier excerpts from the catalogue (available on the Archives page of the Embassy Theatre’s web site) cover the photographs inscribed to Bud Berger and the posters, playbills, programs, stools, and so on from later shows at the Embassy. This is the third excerpt, covering the public- ity photographs of the last forty-five years and a few photographs of earlier events, Bud Berger, and other members of the stage crew. Larry also co-starred with Ivana Milicevic, Yaphet Kotto, Peter Stormare, Joe Mantegna, Jenny McCarthy and Eric Roberts in Witless Protection. In this feature film, Larry stars as a small town sheriff who witnesses what he believes is a kidnapping, and rushes to rescue the beautiful victim, played by Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale). The film is currently available on DVD. Prior to Witless Protection, Larry starred in the film Delta Farce which was released by Lionsgate on May 11, 2007. The movie also starred Bill Engvall and DJ Qualls and is currently available on DVD. His first feature Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector was released by Lionsgate on March 24, 2006. The comedy starred Joe Pantoliano, Joanna Cassidy, and Tony Hale. The DVD was released by Paramount Home Video on August 8, 2006 and sold more than 1 million copies in the first week of release. Larry is the voice of Mater in the Golden Globe winning animated feature film Cars from Disney/Pixar. Cars was released on June 9, 2006 and opened at # 1 at the box office, and grossed over 200 million dollars domestically. Larry was part of the highly successful concert Blue Collar Comedy Tour, which grossed more than 15 million dollars.
