The aim of this study was to characterize high exopolysaccharide (EPS)-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from mustard pickles in Taiwan for potential probiotic applications. Among 39 collected LAB strains, four most productive EPS-producing strains were selected for further analysis. Comparative analyses of 16S rDNA genes rpoA and pheS sequences demonstrated that these strains were members of Lactobacillus plantarum-group (LPG). NCD 2, NLD 4, SLC 13, and NLD 16 showed survival rates of 95.83% ± 0.49%, 95.07% ± 0.64%, 105.84% ± 0.82%, and 99.65% ± 0.31% under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, respectively. No cytotoxic effects on macrophage RAW 264.7 cells were observed when they were treated with a low dose (1 μg/ml) of stimulants extracted from the tested LAB strains. The production of nitric oxide in RAW 264.7 cells incubated with various LAB stimulants showed a dose-dependent increase. Among the four strains, SLC 13 showed higher inhibitory activity on growth of Enterococcus faecalis (BCRC 12302) and Yersinia enterocolitica (BCRC 10807).

ABSTRACT: All other things being equal, questions arise as to whether the location of firms in distinct regions will result in variations in their technology capabilities, and what the nature of the local industrial environment is that determines regional technology gaps. This study investigates these issues from a perspective of industrial agglomerative dynamic externalities, examining the roles played by three influential assertions on regional technology gaps, namely, the Marshall-Arrow-Romer (MAR), Porter and Jacobs hypotheses. The results tend to favour the contention of Porter hypothesis on the contribution of the nature of local industrial agglomeration to the production technologies of information and computer technology (ICT) firms. 1. INTRODUCTION Over the past two decades, there has been some considerable resurgence in interest in the discussion of the phenomenon of industrial agglomeration. The attention of regional and industrial public policy has also been drawn to the successful development of so-called ‘new industrial districts’ or ‘industrial clusters’, such as the electronics industries in Silicon Valley in the US, the clothing industry in Northern Italy and the Hsin-chu Science-based Industrial Park in Taiwan. Theoretically, the agglomeration of firms would provide effects of external economic benefits.     Annual Report 2009 Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Taipei, Taiwan The Republic of China Foreword Fai-nan Perng, Governor The worldwide recession continued to affect Taiwan's economy during the first half of 2009. During the second half of the year, the turnaround in the U.S. and Europe, coupled with the local government's stimulus package, gradually lifted Taiwan's external trade, private consumption and investment. Economic growth resumed in the fourth quarter but remained at negative 1.87 percent for the year as a whole. The annual unemployment rate also rose to 5.85 percent. Meanwhile, weak domestic demand, on top of falling international commodity prices, led consumer prices to decline by 0.87 percent for the year, a relatively stable level among major countries. To boost domestic demand, the Bank twice lowered policy rates during the first two months of 2009, as part of the rate cut cycle that began in September 2008. A total of 237.5 basis points were slashed on seven occasions during the cycle. Lower interest rates helped reduce the funding costs of individuals and enterprises and encourage private consumption and investment. In addition, the Bank engaged in open market operations to keep reserve money and the interbank call-loan rate at accommodative levels. It also helped enhance the capacity of the Small and Medium Enterprise Credit Guarantee Fund to meet funding demands of SMEs. These measures helped create an environment conducive to economic recovery. Bolstered by monetary easing actions, and net foreign capital inflows in the second half of the year, M2 grew by 7.21 percent in 2009, breaching the upper limit of the Bank's 2.5 percent to 6.5 percent target zone.
