City of Riviera Beach LivCom Awards 2012 Fact Sheet

The International Awards for Liveable Communities (LivCom Awards) was launched in 1997. The prestigious LivCom Awards is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and coveted by communities around the globe. The LivCom Awards is the world’s only awards competition that focuses on international best practices regarding the management of the local environment. In pursuit of its mission, the LivCom Awards seeks to accomplish multiple objectives, including: To encourage best practices, innovation and leadership. To maintain an international network of cities that share innovative programs with each other. To improve the quality of life of individual citizens through the creation of liveable communities. To recognize innovative projects which demonstrate sustainability and environmental awareness, and have a positive impact on the local community and environment.

The LivCom Awards is a non-political organization that embraces all nations and cultures. In fact, more than 50 countries have been represented within the awards. The LivCom Awards is managed by the LivCom Management Company, a United Kingdom Registered Charity.

Dates and Location of LivCom Awards 2012 The LivCom Awards 2012 will be held November 22 – 26, 2012. Al Ain City in the United Arab Emirates is the host city for the LivCom Awards 2012.

Delegates Tony Brown and Annetta Jenkins will represent the City of Riviera Beach as delegates. Delegate invitations were extended to Lockheed Martin, Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, Viking, Port of Palm Beach and Riviera Beach CRA and Riviera Beach Community Development Corporation (CDC) board members. The event is being held during the week of Thanksgiving which was problematic for most invitees.

Awards Competition The LivCom Awards presents awards in several categories. The Riviera Beach Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) submitted entries to compete in two (2) LivCom Award categories, Whole City Award and Bursary Award. Even though there were a record number of entries, the LivCom Awards Judging Panel selected the City of Riviera Beach as a finalist for the Whole City Award and Bursary Award.

Whole City Award The Whole City Award entries are assessed on six (6) judging criterion including: Enhancement of the Natural and Built Landscape; Arts, Culture and Heritage; Environmental Best Practices; Community Participation and Empowerment; Healthy Lifestyle; and Strategic Planning.

City of Riviera Beach LivCom Awards 2012 Fact Sheet For the Whole City Award, the Riviera Beach CRA is presenting its approach to neighborhood engagement and revitalization as part of an overarching community redevelopment strategy that addresses the needs of poor, disadvantaged residents who are being impacted by major redevelopment projects in the Riviera Beach Heights neighborhood. Moreover, our oral presentation will focus on the City of Riviera Beach and Riviera Beach CRA’s programs, projects and initiatives that align with the judging criteria. Whole City Award Finalists In the Whole City Award category, the City of Riviera Beach is competing in Category B, which includes other cities across the globe that have resident populations of 20,001 to 75,000. Bursary Award The Bursary Award is designed for communities to submit neighborhood projects that have a maximum capital cost of £20,000 (≈ $31,944); advance the objective of the LivCom Awards to create a livable community; and satisfy one or more of the LivCom Awards judging criteria.

City of Riviera Beach LivCom Awards 2012 Fact Sheet The Riviera Beach CRA Bursary Award entry focuses on a proposal to design, construct and manage a community garden on a derelict, vacant lot in the Riviera Beach Heights neighborhood. The garden will beautify this challenged area; improve the environment by growing plants and flowers; produce healthy and affordable food for the community, in conjunction with the Riviera Beach Market at the Marina; create job opportunities for low-income youth; and reduce crime by eliminating a haven for illicit activity.
