This ballet is a landmark event in the framework of the rich cul- tural exchange program for the year 2011 betwe- en Italy and India. The Accademia Teatro alla Scala shows a high level dance performing group of young artists which have met a remarkable success in Italy. Dance being a traditional form of artistic expression in India, I am conf ident that the Indian public will highly appreciate the elegant ways of dancing of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala interpreters and their ability to combine the art and tradition of the Italian Ballet with Indian fragrances and sounds.

Ipnos is a show inspired by a multitude of f lagrances that are collected in a sequence of scenes. The choreography by Davide Bombana responds to these evocations and the music by Riccardo Nova gives voice to such harmonies with a manifest call to the East, with the intensity of f lagrant spices and incenses. Contemplative atmospheres contrast with the fast, thumping rhythms that signify the neurosis of contemporary society. The hypnotic power of colours and f lagrances are utilized to recall the memories of situations and people. The sound of mrindangam, a traditional Indian instrument, is blended with that of the cello in a score which alternates the sounds of electronics, Suf i voices, percus- sion and strings. Throughout the dance scenes, extended archaic harmonies are composed. Set and Costumes have been designed and realized by Set and Costume Designers of the Acca- demia Teatro alla Scala.

The Accademia Teatro alla Scala Ballet is directed by Frédéric Olivieri. The Dancers take part in the most important of Scala productions and perform a show at the end of the academic year. In recent years, contacts with world renown choreographers and dancers have become regu- lar feature (for instance, Vladimir Derevianko, Patricia Neary, Suki Schorer or young artists as Francesco Ventriglia). Moreover, the contemporary repertoire has been widened significantly, thanks to choreography concessions made to the Accademia, which include works by such artists as , Matz Ek, William Forsythe, JiĜí Kylian and Angelin Preljocaj, just to name a few.
