Researcher Institute o f Migration Turku, Finland Abstract From the last part o f the 19th century, Finnish immigrants in North America were in volved in a variety of cultural activities. Among the many interests the immigrants had were music and songs, which were a natural part of their existence. My intention here is to give a brief overview of this area of tradition which is less known in every way. I will provide an idea o f the Finnish-American identity described in the songs o f Finns in America between the years 1900 and 1930. Sometimes only written by hand, published in a small booklet or printed by a Finnish-American organization as a songbook, or sung on major- label records, in these songs there can still be found traces of the individual mind and group voice o f these immigrants. The identity itself has a double meaning and is very well suited as a focus when discussing these songs. As we all know, one meaning of identity is sameness and another is distinctiveness, where the latter seems to refer to individual identity and the former has to do with a sense of commonality between several persons who constitute a group.' The song texts in question often more or less follow these given identity patterns. I am simply trying to find an answer to the following question: What was the identity that an individual Finn or Finns as a group wanted to manifest to other ethnic groups during the “golden years“ o f Finnish-American culture in the United States. -

We felt from the beginning that, generally, it HISTORICAL RECORDINGS 47 was not sufficient to have just a voice reading the text, and that, as in film, music can be used imaginatively to set the period and the BOX SETS 48 atmosphere of a story. -
Emily Dickinson Poems Commentary
Emily Dickinson was twenty on 10 December 1850. There are 5 of her poems surviving from 1850-4. Poem 1 F1 ‘Awake ye muses nine’ In Emily’s youth the feast of St Valentine was celebrated not for one day but for a whole week, during which ‘the notes flew around like snowflakes (L27),’ though one year Emily had to admit to her brother Austin that her friends and younger sister had received scores of them, but his ‘highly accomplished and gifted elderly sister (L22)’ had been entirely overlooked. She sent this Valentine in 1850 to Elbridge Bowdoin, her father’s law partner, who kept it for forty years. It describes the law of life as mating, and in lines 29-30 she suggests six possible mates for Bowdoin, modestly putting herself last as ‘she with curling hair.’ The poem shows her sense of fun and skill as a verbal entertainer. Poem 2 [not in F] ‘There is another sky’ On 7 June 1851 her brother Austin took up a teaching post in Boston. Emily writes him letter after letter, begging for replies and visits home. He has promised to come for the Autumn fair on 22 October, and on 17 October Emily writes to him (L58), saying how gloomy the weather has been in Amherst lately, with frosts on the fields and only a few lingering leaves on the trees, but adds ‘Dont think that the sky will frown so the day when you come home! She will smile and look happy, and be full of sunshine then – and even should she frown upon her child returning…’ and then she follows these words with poem 2, although in the letter they are written in prose, not verse. -

Who might or might not think to ask their parents: “Where does love come from?” 4 5 This book contains a collection of traditions and rituals, to be performed by aspiring rationalists on Solstice Eve. Ritual is a complex, interesting and potentially powerful force. It’s difficult to create from scratch - it order to be effective, it needs to have a timeless quality about it. It doesn’t have to actually BE timeless - there are some good Christmas songs that are only 50 years old. But it needs to have the feel of something that’s extremely familiar, and personal. In the wild, rituals evolve from family to family, adapting in the face of memetic selection pressure to fill specific niches, often with bizarre injokes and absurdities. The absurdities help bind a community together. -
