He is the son of James Mulford and Maria Theresa Townsend. He was fond of his books and of the companionship of good friends as well, and youthful characteristics have remained constant. Gradu- ated from Yale in 1871, in a class that gave not a few eminent men to the professions, he continued his studies in the Yale Law School, along the line which nature seemed to have marked out for him. In 1874 he received the degree of LL.B, and immediately was admitted to the bar in New Haven County, and entered upon the practice of his pro- fession. -

A Collection of Ballads
A COLLECTION OF BALLADS INTRODUCTION When the learned first gave serious attention to popular ballads, from the time of Percy to that of Scott, they laboured under certain disabilities. The Comparative Method was scarcely understood, and was little practised. Editors were content to study the ballads of their own countryside, or, at most, of Great Britain. Teutonic and Northern parallels to our ballads were then adduced, as by Scott and Jamieson. It was later that the ballads of Europe, from the Faroes to Modern Greece, were compared with our own, with European Märchen, or children’s tales, and with the popular songs, dances, and traditions of classical and savage peoples. The results of this more recent comparison may be briefly stated. Poetry begins, as Aristotle says, in improvisation. Every man is his own poet, and, in moments of stronge motion, expresses himself in song. A typical example is the Song of Lamech in Genesis— “I have slain a man to my wounding, And a young man to my hurt.” Instances perpetually occur in the Sagas: Grettir, Egil, Skarphedin, are always singing. In Kidnapped, Mr. Stevenson introduces “The Song of the Sword of Alan,” a fine example of Celtic practice: words and air are beaten out together, in the heat of victory. In the same way, the women sang improvised dirges, like Helen; lullabies, like the lullaby of Danae in Simonides, and flower songs, as in modern Italy. Every function of life, war, agriculture, the chase, had its appropriate magical and mimetic dance and song, as in Finland, among Red Indians, and among Australian blacks. -

I contend that in both texts, fairies become intimately associated with conceptions of the ancient British past, and, more narrowly, with the idea of a specifically insular kingship that seeks its legitimization within that past. In Chapter One, I argue that Map’s longer version of the Herla narrative is his own synthesis of traditional materials, intended to highlight the continuity of a notion of British kingship that includes the pygmy king, Herla and Henry II. -

Cole A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the School of English in the University of St Andrews 17 December 2013 i ABSTRACT My thesis, ‘Fairy in Middle English romance’, aims to contribute to the recent resurgence of interest in the literary medieval supernatural by studying the concept of ‘fairy’ as it is presented in fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Middle English romances. This thesis is particularly interested in how the use of ‘fairy’ in Middle English romances serves as an arena in which to play out ‘thought-experiments’ that test anxieties about faith, gender, power, and death. My first chapter considers the concept of fairy in its medieval Christian context by using the romance Melusine as a case study to examine fairies alongside medieval theological explorations of the nature of demons. I then examine the power dynamic of fairy/human relationships and the extent to which having one partner be a fairy affects these explorations of medieval attitudes toward gender relations and hierarchy. The third chapter investigates ‘fairy-like’ women enchantresses in romance and the extent to which fairy is ‘performed’ in romance. -

WOMEN’S GATHERING: THE AUCHINLECK MANUSCRIPT AND WOMEN’S READING IN 14TH CENTURY LONDON A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Matthew Clinton McConnell January 2017 © 2017 Matthew Clinton McConnell WOMEN’S GATHERING: THE AUCHINLECK MANUSCRIPT AND WOMEN’S READING IN 14TH CENTURY LONDON Matthew Clinton McConnell, Ph.D. 2017 Women’s Gathering argues that MS Advocates 19.2.1 (Auchinleck) provides key evidence for understanding the early 14th century London literary scene that fostered Chaucer. Reading Chaucer and the Auchinleck side by side, I show that the manuscript’s sustained concern about women’s agency mirrors Chaucer’s, and that the complexity with which Chaucer treats that agency can be found in the Auchinleck too. Furthermore, I argue that the similarity is not due to a direct line of influence between manuscript and author, but stems from a mutually shared 14th century London literary microculture. The introduction argues that the Auchinleck scribes performed the process of textual collocation as a consciously literary act of gathering, not simply as a collection in a material object. Their collocation of texts spanning multiple genres informs our understanding of their own scribal activity and of Chaucer’s. This in turn requires that we acknowledge the London literary culture of the early—and not just of the late— fourteenth century for its contributions to our understanding of the romance genre, and of women’s relationship to it. Particularly with the texts that focus on women as agents in history and narrative, I argue that the manuscript genders the reading practices of its 14th century audience and is thus predicated on reading practices that circumscribed 14th century femininity. -

But lost in the arguments about what he means is the very basic question of what he is. This project aims to understand Grendel qua monster and investigate how we associate him with the monstrous. I identify for study a number of traits that distinguish him from the humans of the poem— all of which cluster around either morphological abnormality (claws, gigantism, shining eyes) or deviant behavior (anthropophagy, lack of food preparation, etiquette). These traits are specifically selected and work together to form a constellation of transgressions, an embodiment of the monstrous on which other arguments about his symbolic value rest. -

Here, I have used the basic concepts of general systems theory, the ab- stract systems concepts which underlie any systems approach, to develop a methodology for the study of literature particularly suited to the investigation of literary interrelationships at any level. The appli- cation here is to the interrelationship of the Christian and the Germanic elements in the Old English poem, The Dream Qf the Rood. Thus, two purposes emerge as central in this study: the development of a systems methodology for the study of literature and the clarification of the nature of the interrelationships of the Christian and the Germanic elements in The Dream <2f the Rood, both as a point of literary interest in itself and as a demonstration of the systems approach to a literary problem.
