Genevieve Theodora McNutt 2 3 Abstract This thesis examines the work of antiquary and scholar Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) in publishing significant and influential collections of early English and Scottish literature, including the first collection of medieval romance, by going beyond the biographical approaches to Ritson’s work typical of nineteenth- and twentieth- century accounts, incorporating an analysis of Ritson’s contributions to specific fields into a study of the context which made his work possible. It makes use of the ‘Register of Manuscripts Sent to the Reading Room of the British Museum’ to shed new light on Ritson’s use of the manuscript collections of the British Museum. The thesis argues that Ritson’s early polemic attacks on Thomas Warton, Thomas Percy, and the editors of Shakespeare allowed Ritson to establish his own claims to expertise and authority, built upon the research he had already undertaken in the British Museum and other public and private collections. Through his publications, Ritson experimented with different strategies for organizing, systematizing, interpreting and presenting his research, constructing very different collections for different kinds of texts, and different kinds of readers. A comparison of Ritson’s three major collections of songs – A Select Collection of English Songs (1783), Ancient Songs (1790), and Scotish Songs (1794) – demonstrates some of the consequences of his decisions, particularly the distinction made between English and Scottish material. Although Ritson’s Robin Hood (1795) is the most frequently reprinted of his collections, and one of the best studied, approaching this work within the immediate context of Ritson’s research and other publications, rather than its later reception, offers some explanation for its more idiosyncratic features. Scholarship on Ritson has been cumulative, each successive account built upon, directly or indirectly, some subset of the previous work. This introduction begins with a brief overview of the features of Ritson’s biography relevant to the present thesis before providing an account of the ways in which Ritson’s life and work were presented, interpreted, and contested in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For many of Ritson’s early biographers and critics, the presentation of Ritson’s life and work was closely tied to their understanding of themselves and their own place in the study and publication of early English literature. As such, their accounts are an invaluable record of the reception of Ritson, and of the changing status of the study and publication of early English literature, but as a record of Ritson’s life and immediate context need to be approached cautiously. Bertrand H. Bronson’s biography, Joseph Ritson: Scholar-at-Arms (1938), remains an irreplaceable resource, providing thorough documentation of Ritson’s life and a comprehensive bibliography. I have been able to identify a very few archival resources unknown to Bronson, most significantly the ‘Register of Manuscripts Sent to the Reading Room of the British Museum’, which provides an invaluable record of Ritson’s research.1 However, like the earlier accounts, Bronson is narrowly focused on Ritson as an individual.

Signed Page 3 ABSTRACT This thesis considers the English parliamentary privilege of freedom from arrest (and other legal processes), 1603-1629. Although it is under-represented in the historiography, the early Stuart Commons cherished this particular privilege as much as they valued freedom of speech. Previously one of the privileges requested from the monarch at the start of a parliament, by the seventeenth century freedom from arrest was increasingly claimed as an ‘ancient’, ‘undoubted’ right that secured the attendance of members, and safeguarded their honour, dignity, property, and ‘necessary’ servants. Uncertainty over the status and operation of the privilege was a major contemporary issue, and this prompted key questions for research. First, did ill definition of the constitutional relationship between the crown and its prerogatives, and parliament and its privileges, lead to tensions, increasingly polemical attitudes, and a questioning of the royal prerogative? Where did sovereignty now lie? Second, was it important to maximise the scope of the privilege, if parliament was to carry out its business properly? Did ad hoc management of individual privilege cases nevertheless have the cumulative effect of enhancing the authority and confidence of the Commons? Third, to what extent was the exploitation or abuse of privilege an unintended consequence of the strengthening of the Commons’ authority in matters of privilege? Such matters are not treated discretely, but are embedded within chapters that follow a thematic, broadly chronological approach.

    'A Copious Collection of Newspapers' John Nichols and his Collection of Newspapers, Pamphlets and News Sheets, 1760–1865 Julian Pooley, University of Leicester Introduction John Nichols (1745–1826) was a leading London printer who inherited the business of his former master and partner, William Bowyer the Younger, in 1777, and rose to be Master of the Stationers’ Company in 1804.1 He was also a prominent literary biographer and antiquary whose publications, including biographies of Hogarth and Swift, and a county history of Leicestershire, continue to inform and inspire scholarship today.2 Much of his research drew upon his vast collection of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century newspapers. This essay, based on my ongoing work on the surviving papers of the Nichols family, will trace the history of John Nichols’ newspaper collection.     A Diet for a Sensitive Soul: Vegetarianism in Eighteenth-Century Britain Anita Guerrini While vegetarianism has a long history in Western culture, it reemerged forcefully in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Britain. Three main motivations for vegetarianism converged in this period: religious, medical, and moral. In addition, a vegetarian diet entered mainstream medical and popular thought in the works of the physician George Cheyne. By the time of Joseph Ritson's Essay on Abstinence from Animal Food in 1802, however, vegetarianism was about to rejoin the irrational fringe, exemplified in the nineteenth century by Sylvester Graham and his followers. 1 In this essay, I shall focus on three vegetarians of the period: the radical hatter Thomas Tryon (1634-1703), George Cheyne (1671-1743), and the man of letters Joseph Ritson (1752-1803). Cheyne's work, especially his Essay of Health and Long Life (1724) and The English Malady (1733), defined the nascent concept of the sensitive character and explicitly connected it to diet and lifestyle. To Cheyne, a vegetarian diet was preeminently a diet for the sensitive soul. Over the century, the sensitive soul negotiated a path from the overtly religious Tryon to the covertly religious Cheyne to the professedly antireligious Ritson. To each, in addition, vegetarianism was part of a wider critique of contemporary society. Other recent releases include Motown: A Journey Through Hitsville USA (2007), Love (2009) and Twenty (2011), marking their two decades in the music business. All three performers - baritone Nathan Morris and tenors Shawn Stockman and Wanya Morris – are original members of a singing group that has its roots in Philadelphia's High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
