Hayes III THE BULLETIN July, 1961 Number 22 ************************************************************************************* Date Lines The National Bureau of Standards in January set 5760 years as, the new, more accurate half-life of Carbon 14. This is almost 200 years more than the half-life of 5568 formerly used in calculating CI4 dates. Without rendering unusable the dates already published, the longer half -life weights the probabilities heavily toward the plus or older extreme. Thus a date given as 10,000 ± 250 years, using the longer half-life, is much more likely to be 10,250 years than 9750. Applying the above information to the date of 9652B. C. ± 600 years obtained from the Raddatz Rock Shelter in Wisconsin excavated and reported by Warren L. Wittry in "Wisconsin Archaeologist", Vol. 40, No. 2, we can see that primal occupation of this site approaches 12,000 years. It yielded an "Archaic" type of material described by Wittry (see NYSAA Bulletin 19) as falling into pattern with that of Modoc Rock Shelter in Illinois which, in its lowest level, using the longer C14 half-life, dates at about 11,000 years. The geology of Raddatz, as interpreted by Robert F. Black, shows that the vicinity became permanently ice-free and non-boreal about 10,000 years ago and soil levels thereafter lie in simple chronological super position. -

The first experiment observed free drawing after model presentation, using imitation task. From longitudinal observation of humans (N = 32, 11–31 months), the developmental process of drawing until the emergence of shape imitation was clarified. Adult chimpanzees showed the ability to trace a model, which was difficult for humans who had just started imitation. The sec- ond experiment, free drawing on incomplete facial stimuli, revealed the remarkable difference between two species. Humans (N = 57, 6–38 months) tend to complete the missing parts even with immature motor con- trol, whereas chimpanzees never completed the missing parts and instead marked the existing parts or traced the outlines. Cognitive characteristics may affect the emergence of representational drawings. The oldest representational drawings in existence are examining the drawing behavior of chimpanzees the upper Paleolithic cave drawings of Homo sapiens, (Pan troglodytes), humans’ closest living relatives. who drew animals with a variety of materials and Chimpanzees and humans share about 98.8% of the refined techniques (Beltran, 2000; Chauvet, Des- genome (Chimpanzee Sequencing and Analysis champs, & Hillaire, 1996). Wight, Dean of The Graduate School. ABSTRACT This dissertation utilizes life history theory to describe traits that are derived in humans through comparisons with other primate species. Modern human life histories are unique in that they are slower, exhibiting distinctly long postmenopausal life spans and later ages at sexual maturity as a result of a reduction in adult mortality since the evolutionary split the last Pan-Homo ancestor. Faster reproduction with shorter than expected interbirth intervals and earlier weaning ages are likely the result of cooperative breeding featuring postmenopausal grandmothers. Life history traits are distinguished from life history related variables (LHRVs) which are used to makes inferences about life history variables in extinct taxa. Body mass LHRV is a strong predictive life history proxy, but brain size and dental development are only weakly associated and inferences using them should be made with caution. -

14/9/2018 Gilf Kebir - Wikipedia Coordinates: 23°26′29″N 25°50′23″E Gilf Kebir Gilf Kebir ( ) (var. Gilf alKebir, Jilf al Kabir) is a plateau in the New Valley Governorate of the remote southwest corner of Egypt, and southeast Libya. Its name translates as "the Great Barrier". This 7,770 km2 (3,000 sq mi) sandstone plateau, roughly the size of Puerto Rico, rises 300 m (980 ft) from the Libyan Desert floor. The name Gilf Kebir was given to the plateau by Prince Kamal el Dine Hussein in 1925, as it had no local name.[1] It is known for its rugged beauty, remoteness, geological interest, and the dramatic cliff paintings-pictographs and rock carvings-petroglyphs which depict an earlier era of abundant animal life and human habitation. External links Geography and climate The Uweinat mountain range at the very south of the plateau extends from Egypt into Libya and Sudan. Climate Gilf Kebir Plateau lies in the heart of the eastern part of the vast Sahara Desert, and, thus, gets some of the most extreme climates on Earth. This is the driest place on the planet, not only because the area is totally rainless (the annual average rainfall amount hardly reaches 0.1 mm) but also because the geological aridity index/dryness ratio is over 200, which means that the solar energy received at the ground evaporate 200 times the amount of precipitation received.[2] Rainfall may fall every twenty years in Gilf Kebir. -
