Logical Investigations at the University of Pozna« in 1945 1955 Logical investigations at the University of Pozna« in 19451955 Roman Murawski¤ and Jerzy Pogonowski Abstract The paper is devoted to the presentation of logical investigations carried out at the University of Pozna« in the rst decade after its reopening in 1945. One of the problems considered in the paper is whether there was any continuation of the Lvov-Warsaw Logical School at Pozna« University. 1 Some introductory information The history of Warsaw Logical School (being an important part of Lvov-Warsaw Philosophical School) is well known.1 But logical investigations have been carried out also at other scientic and academic centers of Poland, not only in Warsaw. Hence the question how did they look like? What were the connections with Warsaw School? Were they connected with the tradition of Lvov-Warsaw School? We want to investigate those questions with respect to Pozna« University. We are interested in the period 19451955.2 To understand it better we shall start by describing briey logical investigations at Pozna« before the Second World War. The university in Pozna« was founded in 1919. This happened 400 years after the foundation of the Lubra«ski Academy and 308 years after the formal creation of the university in Pozna« by king Zygmunt III on the base of a Jesuit college (the university was not created then as a consequence of objections by the Cracow Academy). The initiators of the foundation of a university after the First World War were scholars gathered at Pozna« Friends of Scholarship (Pozna«skie Towarzystwo Przyjacióª Nauk; shortly: PTPN) existing since 1857. The university was founded as Wszechnica Piastowska (Piast University). In 1920 the name was changed to that of the University of Pozna«. ¤The nancial support of the Committee for Scientic Researches (grant no 1 H01A 042 27) is acknowledged. 1Cf. Grot 1971, 1972). Remembrances of some persons (former students of Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz), whose scientic career has started in the considered period as well as (rather few) existing papers on the activity of particular scholars were also used. 1 At the beginning there were two faculties: Faculty of Philosophy and Faculty of Law. Since 1925 there existed ve faculties: Law and Economy, Medicine, Humani- ties, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry. Already in 1919 at the Faculty of Philosophy a Chair of Theory and Method- ology of Natural Sciences and Humanities was founded. Its head was Wªadysªaw Mieczysªaw Kozªowski (18581935). He was scientically active in many domains: botany, history, theory of literature and others but he is known rst of all as a philosopher working also in logic. His main achievements in the latter are: an in- teresting and original classication of sciences and his works in the methodology of sociology. He was also the author of a university handbook in logic Podstawy logiki, czyli zasady nauk (Warszawa 1916). It was already a bit out of date when Kozªowski taught logic at the University of Pozna«, nonetheless it was the rst Polish handbook of logic in which Boolean algebras and the theory of relations were presented. The author formulated there the whole of syllogistic using the concepts of Boolean algebra augmented by a certain type of existential quantier. His follower at the chair was Zygmunt Zawirski (18821948) who studied philoso- phy, mathematics and physics at the Lvov University and received Ph.D. in Lvov in 1906 and Habilitation at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow in 1924. Since 1928 he was professor at the University in Pozna«. He worked in the methodology of physics as well as in the formal logic. In the latter he was interested mainly in possible ap- plications of logic, in particular in interrelations between many-valued logics and the probability theory. At the beginning of 1937 Zawirski moved to Cracow where he became ordinary professor at the Philosophical Faculty of the Jagiellonian University. The Ministry of Education asked all the relevant professors in Poland to suggest a candidate to ll the vacancy. Alfred Tarski (19011983) was unanimously recommended but was not appointed. The reason was the atmosphere in Pozna« always a stronghold of right-wing conservatism and dominated by the Catholic church, had, since Piªsudski's death in 1935, moved even further to the right and became outright fascistic and anti- Semitic. Because there was no way to appoint anyone else without making the reasons for denying Tarski the professorship patently clear, the position was eliminated.3 Before the war at the University in Pozna« worked also a philosopher and logician Adam Wiegner (18891967). He obtained his Habilitation in 1934 and was active mainly after the Second World War hence we will talk about him later. One can see that before 1945 there were no real investigations in logic sensu stricto in Pozna«. Logic was developed by philosophers interested mainly in the methodology. On the other hand mathematicians in Pozna« were not interested in logic at all. During the Second World War the university was closed by the German authorities. It existed and worked, however, as the underground Uniwersytet Ziem Zachodnich (University of Western Territories). 3Cf. Wole«ski (1995) as well as Feferman and Feferman (2004), pp. 102103. 2 The university was reopened in 1945.4 And now the situation of logic has changed: philosophers who moved to Pozna« (mainly from Lvov) were really interested in logic and scientically active in this eld and on the other hand mathematicians, in particular Wªadysªaw Orlicz (a collaborator of Stefan Banach in Lvov) who re- launched the mathematical center in Pozna« though not working in logic set a high value on it. In 1945 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences the Chair of Theory and Methodology of Science has been founded its head was professor Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz (who came to Pozna« from Lvov via Cracow). In 1951 its name was changed to Chair of Logic at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. Members of the chair were (in various periods): Seweryna uszczewska-Romahnowa, Roman Suszko, Tadeusz Strumiªªo, Franciszek Zeidler, Zbigniew Czerwi«ski, Andrzej Malewski. Researches led at the chair were devoted to epistemology, formal logic and method- ology. Beside the doctorate and Habilitation of R. Suszko (see below) two other procedures leading to Habilitation were carried out: by Henryk Mehlberg (on the basis of the dissertation Essai sur la theorie causale du temps) and by Maria Lutman (dissertation O wzglêdno±ci prawdy (On the relativity of truth)). Classes given by members of the chair were devoted to: main principles of logic and methodology (with exercises) (this course was obligatory for all students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences), mathematical logic (with exercises), logic (for students of other faculties), elements of set theory and mathematical logic, seminar on methodology as well as proseminars. Ajdukiewicz led also a seminar in logic for postgraduate and graduate students (see below). In 1945 at the Faculty of Humanities, the Chair of Philosophy was reactivated. It was renamed in January 1951 to Chair of the History of Philosophy. Since 1947 its head was Adam Wiegner. In 1951 Wiegner became the head of the newly opened Chair of Logic which, since 1952, was located at the Philosophical-Historical Faculty. In this chair were active among others Jerzy Giedymin (since 1953) and Zbigniew Czerwi«ski (from 1951 till 1953). An important role in the scholar life in Pozna« after the war was played by Pozna« Friends of Scholarship. Pozna« logicians repeatedly delivered lectures at meetings of the Philosophical Committee of this society (often held as joint meetings of PTPN and the Polish Philosophical Society). Among the invited speakers one nds also: Stanisªaw Ja±kowski, Tadeusz Kotarbi«ski, Tadeusz Cze»owski, Maria Kokoszy«ska- Lutmanowa, Izydora D¹mbska, Maria Ossowska.5 PTPN was also active by editing books and journals. Mieczysªaw Dybowski on Existentialism in psychology was given (30 persons were present). 3 meetings one nds some interesting information on editorial plans (as well as changes of them). For example, Ajdukiewicz intended to publish in October 1950 a work Krytyczna analiza idealizmu (Critical analysis of idealism) (10 printed sheets) (in the minute it was written: the subject of the work is of great world-view signicance). In plans for the fourth quarter of 1951 a work under the same title is planned in the size of 5 printed sheets only. In 1952 Ajdukiewicz withdrew a work (planned for this year) under the title Analiza klasycznej problematyki epistemologicznej (An analysis of the classical problems of epistemology) instead a paper by R. Suszko O an- tynomiach logicznych (On logical antinomies) (1.5 printed sheets) was planned. The latter was then moved in plans to 1953, next to 1954 (ultimately it was never pub- lished in Pozna«; Suszko published W sprawie antynomii kªamcy i semantyki jêzyka naturalnego (Concerning the antinomy of the liar and semantics of natural language) in Warsaw). Heated discussions were led concerning the question of publishing or rejecting a paper by T. Wªodarczyk Logika zda« u Dunsa Szkota i Pseudo-Szkota (Propositional logic by Duns Scotus and Pseudo-Scotus). Pozna« logical center was active also in publishing journals. Note that the rst volume of the new journal devoted to logic, namely Studia Logica has been prepared for publication in Pozna« in 1953.

In the course of their debate, which took place in the 1930’s, they discussed some basic issues of epistemology, focusing on the problems of the sources of scientific knowledge, objectivity of knowledge, and truth. The aim of the paper is to place their debate in a the historical context and to demonstrate the novelty of Fleck’s arguments, especially in comparison with Thomas S. Kuhn’s later contribution. I also examine the dominant interpretations of Fleck’s theory of knowledge, as well as the reasons for which his philosophical ideas, especially Entstehung und Entwicklung einer wissenschaftlichen Tatsache (1935) have fallen into the philosophical obliv- ion. I argue that Fleck’s views, although innovative, were less radical than it is commonly thought. My comments focus on the polemic that ensued in the 1930s between Izydora Dąmbska and Ludwik Fleck. The authors involved in it either directly or indirectly referred to the fundamental questions of the theory of cognition: the question of the sources of scientific knowledge, objectivity of knowledge (its communicabil- ity), relative nature of scientific knowledge, truth. The small total volume of texts which directly referred to the views of the adversaries as well as the place where the dispute occurred (Lvov, a geographically peripheral part of the “civilised world” at the time) could suggest that this was just a minor episode in the history of thought, not worth mentioning.

In his memoirs, Ingarden included several facts and accusations, and mentioned individuals who, in his opinion, had a negative influence on the development of his academic career, especially regarding his ability to obtain a position at Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. The reasons for this, which were various and numerous, appeared from the moment Ingarden obtained habilitation. Not without significance were the opinions of his fellow philosophers concerning phenomenology in general and Ingardens research papers in particular. In each case, the focal point at which all academic and organisational events concerning philosophy converged was the person of Kazimierz Twardowski. A discussion of the period of their collaboration in Lviv is preceded by a presentation of the situation some years earlier, in which Ingarden combined work as a middle-school teacher, original philosophical work, and, finally, work on habilitation. Every scientific theory is an entity of logically compact generalizations deduced from established scientific facts, the generalizations being connected with the contemporary state of science. The purpose of such a theory is to explain the cause or the system of causes, conditions and circumstances of the original phenomena of interest to us. The complexity is a scientific theory [2] which asserts that some systems display behavioral phenomena that are completely inexplicable by any conventional analysis of the systems’ constituent parts. These phenomena, commonly referred to as emergent behaviours, seem to occur in many complex systems involving living organisms, such as a stock market [3] or the human brain (…). Precisely how to model such emergence—that is, to devise mathematical laws that will allow emergent behaviour to be explained and even predicted—is a major problem that has yet to be solved by complexity theorists. 1 Apart from the definitions of complexity, some of them being mathematical while others-informal, there exist also different methods of investigation and description of complexity. Although the sciences of complexity explore relatively new theoretical field, we already, at this stage, find a whole spectrum of approaches to the complexity issue lying between computational approaches to complexity in the tradition of information theory and cybernetics and the more conceptual approaches that we find in organicism, emergentism and systems theory 2.

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Izydora Da˛mbska was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Lvov-Warsaw School and a disciple of both the School’s founder Kazimierz Twardowski and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. Interest in the School was the result of Twardowski’s program of scientific philosophy, which was adopted by the vast majority of his students. This program assumed that the basic condition for prac- ticing philosophy in a scientific manner is the precise use of language by a philosopher. One of the scholars who devoted most attention to language was Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. Da˛mbska accepted that the philosophical program of the School was opposed to the trend shared by many contemporary schools at the time which belonged to the so called current of linguistic philosophy. According to this trend, language is the only object of philosophical investigation. The analysis of Ajdukiewicz’s concept of language is one of her most interesting achievements in the domain of philosophy of language. This concept, called by Da˛mbska ‘the immanent concept of language’, is the basis of Ajdukiewicz’s well-known radical conventionalism.     Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe), 2019, 9 (1–2), 37–45 DOI:10.2478/ebce-2019-0006 On the search for sources of good and evil in the Lvov-Warsaw School of Philosophy Stefan Konstańczak1 Abstract In this article, the author attempts to identify the sources of good and evil as undertaken by the Lvov-Warsaw School of Philosophy (LWSP) founded by Kazimierz Twardowski. Such attempts were undertaken by both Twardowski himself and his closest students and associates; Władysław Witwicki, Tadeusz Kotarbiński. Tadeusz Czeżowski, and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. The best-known approach is Kotarbiński’s independent ethics in which the author refers to Aristotle perceiving such potential in the characteristics of each individual as to distinguish elementary qualities in the form of opposites including opposition to good and evil. According to this approach, man acts in an evil manner because he stops following the natural voice of his own heart and instead implements set proposals provided by external factors. In the opinion of the author, the proposals formulated within the LWSP can form the basis for a rational explanation of the atrocities committed during World War II which modern ethics, being focused on neutral metaethical issues, fails to do. The aim of the paper is to show that the task of filling this gap is not without merit and to outline the way how to complete this task. Theoretical and methodological roots of theory of judgement of the Lvov School in philosophy lies in philosophy of Franz Brentano, whose views on logic have been identified as the first ever revolt against Aristotelian logic. This fact increases the theoretical and practical value of attainments in the theory of judgement of the School as one of the most potent centers of Brentano’s philosophy, and justifies the necessity to scrutinize and systematize them. In turn, taking into consideration the fact that for specific interpretations of judgement in the School there were mainly innovative constructions of logic, conducting such a study seems to be crucial not only from the historical point of view (as the reconstruction of an important period of history of Polish philosophy and logic in Lvov) but also can provide plenty of interesting issues and serve as the source of inspiration for contemporary logic and meta-logic research. Therefore the way how to complete the task of the paper is like following: (1) to reconstruct a full range of theoretical propositions in the theory of judgment devised in the Lvov School; (2) to explicate epistemic and ontic foundations of theoretical propositions of the School and (3) to find, analytically develop, and introduce to science so far unknown scientific materials (dissertations, readings and academic lectures, correspondences, etc.).

From Bolzano he took the ideas of abstract content and absolute truth; from Brentano the centrality of intentionality and the role of psychology, and from both an awareness of the historical depth of philosophy. These streams flowed together in and through him to form central doctrines, attitudes and practices of that School, from its origins in 1895 to its continuation in contemporary Polish philosophy. Prelude: The Geopolitics of Central – Eastern Europe Near the Polish city of Mysłowice, south-east of Katowice in Silesia, two small rivers flow together: the Black Przemsza from the north-west, and the White Przemsza from the north-east, forming the Przemsza, a short tributary of Poland’s main river, the Vistula. The confluence of the two tributaries of the Przemsza was, from 1871 to 1914, a geopolitical tripoint, where three empires met: the German Empire to the west, the Russian Empire to the north, and the Austro-Hungarian empire to the east, and it became known as Three Emperors’ Corner, Dreikaisereck, Trójkąt Trzech Cesarzy, Уголтрёхимператоров. I am using the flowing together, or confluence, of streams of water to form a new stream as a metaphor for the bringing together of two streams of thought to form a new stream, combining aspects of the two.

    Introduction. The School: Its Genesis, Development and Significance Urszula Wybraniec-Skardowska Abstract. The Introduction outlines, in a concise way, the history of the Lvov- Warsaw School – a most unique Polish school of worldwide renown, which pi- oneered trends combining philosophy, logic, mathematics and language. The author accepts that the beginnings of the School fall on the year 1895, when its founder Kazimierz Twardowski, a disciple of Franz Brentano, came to Lvov on his mission to organize a scientific circle. Soon, among the characteristic fea- tures of the School was its serious approach towards philosophical studies and teaching of philosophy, dealing with philosophy and propagation of it as an intellectual and moral mission, passion for clarity and precision, as well as ex- change of thoughts, and cooperation with representatives of other disciplines. The genesis is followed by a chronological presentation of the development of the School in the successive years. The author mentions all the key represen- tatives of the School (among others, Ajdukiewicz, Leśniewski, Łukasiewicz, Tarski), accompanying the names with short descriptions of their achieve- ments. The development of the School after Poland’s regaining independence in 1918 meant part of the members moving from Lvov to Warsaw, thus pro- viding the other segment to the name – Warsaw School of Logic. The author dwells longer on the activity of the School during the Interwar period – the time of its greatest prosperity, which ended along with the outbreak of World War 2. Attempts made after the War to recreate the spirit of the School are also outlined and the names of continuators are listed accordingly.

The paper notes that the main sources of inspiration in the early 20th century included Leon Petrażycki, Bronisław Wróblewski, Czesław Znamie- rowski and Jerzy Lande, who exerted a great influence on the first generation of Polish post-War legal theorists. The Lvov-Warsaw school of analytical philosophy also had a huge impact on Polish jurisprudence, as the school to a large extent determined the research questions posed by Polish legal theorists. Indeed, analytical legal theory can be said to have dominated Polish jurisprudence from the 1950s up to the end of the 1980s.
