Ilana Löwy (CERMES; Paris; [email protected]) ORCID: 0000-0001-6963-0578 Fleck in Buchenwald In a 1948 Ludwik Fleck published an article “On experiments on human beings” which discussed the regulation of such experiments (Fleck 1948, 1052-1054). He pu- blished this text shortly after testifying at the Nuremberg trial about experiments which involved deliberate infection of healthy people with typhus (Flecks’ testimony at the knowledge of German war research on this disease. He spent the last part of World War I.G. Farben trial in Nuremberg, February 12, 1948/2007). Fleck himself has a first-hand II in Block 50 in the Buchenwald camp, where he and other prisoners produced a typhus vaccine for the German army. Block 50 was in the immediate vicinity of the infamous block 46, where Nazi doctors – the same who were responsible for the vaccine produc- tion – conducted experiments on human beings. “Experiments” may be an inaccurate word. Buchenwald was a criminal endeavor of a criminal state in an insane world whe- re no normal rules applied. The so-called “medical experiments” conducted in Block 46 had very distant relation to medical research, and very strong links with mass murder. On the other hand, the insane world of the concentration camp contained ele- ments which linked it to a more “conventional” science. Nazi doctors who conduc- ted barbarous experiments on prisoners aspired to a conventional professional ca- employed absolutely unacceptable means (read, assassination), but might have still reer. -

The Ideas of Ludwik Fleck and Their Application to the Eukaryotic Cell Cycle, the Restriction Point, and G1-phase Control Stephen Cooper Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Michigan Medical School Ann Arbor Michigan 48109-0620 e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The ideas of Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961) analyzing the conservative nature of scientific ideas are discussed and applied to the proposed G1-phase restriction point as a regulatory element of the mammalian cell cycle. Fleck proposed that ideas become fixed and difficult to change because criticisms of current and dominant models are either ignored or turned to support of the current model. The idea of a thought-collective leading to the stability of ideas is a central theme of the ideas of Ludwik Fleck. 1 Evidence conforms to conceptions just as often as conceptions conform to evidence. Ludwik Fleck, 1935 Introduction The continuum model of eukaryotic cell-cycle control is now almost 25 years old (1,2). This alternative view was actually generated a number of years earlier based on studies of the bacterial cell cycle (3). Since its first proposal, the continuum model has not made much headway against what may be called the G1-phase control model of the cell cycle, a model that is current, dominant, and accepted by a broad consensus of researchers in the field of eukaryotic cell-cycle studies. It is important to understand how the G1-phase control model has remained so dominant despite the success of the alternative continuum model view of the cell cycle in explaining myriad published experimental results on the cell cycle. -

BILIKIEWICZ CONTROVERSY Tadeusz Bilikiewicz, a scholar now somewhat forgotten, was in the 1930s active as an sociologist of knowledge. In 1931 he published a book entitled Jan Jonston, 1603—1677, Żywot i działalność lekarska (His Life and Medical Activity), Warsaw 1931, and a year later Die Embryologie im Zeitalter des Barock und des Rococo, Leipzig 1932. He was also author of many articles, still to be properly investigated. His theory of knowledge he himself called 'perspectivism'. In the Summer issue of the journal 'Przegląd Współczesny' of 1939, an argument was published between Fleck and Bilikiewicz which was overlooked by those concerned because of the outbreak of war, and which has not been taken note of by the bibliographies of Fleck's work. Yet this is an extremely interesting polemic, considering that Bilikie- wicz was an exponent of 'the naive epistemology' seeing the relation between subject and object as being of a 'reflective' nature and accepting only the 'heuristic' influence of environment upon science. He flatly rejected Fleck's conceptions describing it as subjective idealism, agno- sticism, relativism. My intention here is to recall briefly that polemic. I. THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE DISPUTE L. Fleck began to be interested in epistemology soon after his stay in Vienna when he published his Zur Krise der 'Wirklichkeit'i. Roman Ingarden and His Times https: //doi. org/10.12797 /9788381382106.04 DOMINIKA CZAKON NATALIA ANNA MICHNA LESZEK SOSNOWSKI Jagiellonian University in Krakow On the Difficult Academic and Personal Relationship of Roman Ingarden and Kazimierz Twardowski Abstract The present article has the character of a historical review concerning an import ant part of the biography of Roman Witold Ingarden. In his memoirs, Ingarden included several facts and accusations, and mentioned individuals who, in his opinion, had a negative influence on the development of his academic career, especially regarding his ability to obtain a position at Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. The reasons for this, which were various and numerous, appeared from the moment Ingarden obtained habilitation. Not without significance were the opinions of his fellow philosophers concerning phenomenology in general and Ingardens research papers in particular. In each case, the focal point at which all academic and organisational events concerning philosophy converged was the person of Kazimierz Twardowski. A discussion of the period of their collaboration in Lviv is preceded by a presentation of the situation some years earlier, in which Ingarden combined work as a middle-school teacher, original philosophical work, and, finally, work on habilitation. Ingarden kept Twardowski informed about private matters and turned to him for advice on academic, publishing, and occupational issues, the most important being the issue of habilitation. -

Every scientific theory is an entity of logically compact generalizations deduced from established scientific facts, the generalizations being connected with the contemporary state of science. The purpose of such a theory is to explain the cause or the system of causes, conditions and circumstances of the original phenomena of interest to us. The complexity is a scientific theory [2] which asserts that some systems display behavioral phenomena that are completely inexplicable by any conventional analysis of the systems’ constituent parts. These phenomena, commonly referred to as emergent behaviours, seem to occur in many complex systems involving living organisms, such as a stock market [3] or the human brain (…). Precisely how to model such emergence—that is, to devise mathematical laws that will allow emergent behaviour to be explained and even predicted—is a major problem that has yet to be solved by complexity theorists. 1 Apart from the definitions of complexity, some of them being mathematical while others-informal, there exist also different methods of investigation and description of complexity. Although the sciences of complexity explore relatively new theoretical field, we already, at this stage, find a whole spectrum of approaches to the complexity issue lying between computational approaches to complexity in the tradition of information theory and cybernetics and the more conceptual approaches that we find in organicism, emergentism and systems theory 2. -

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Izydora Da˛mbska was one of the most outstanding representatives of the Lvov-Warsaw School and a disciple of both the School’s founder Kazimierz Twardowski and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. Interest in the School was the result of Twardowski’s program of scientific philosophy, which was adopted by the vast majority of his students. This program assumed that the basic condition for prac- ticing philosophy in a scientific manner is the precise use of language by a philosopher. One of the scholars who devoted most attention to language was Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. Da˛mbska accepted that the philosophical program of the School was opposed to the trend shared by many contemporary schools at the time which belonged to the so called current of linguistic philosophy. According to this trend, language is the only object of philosophical investigation. The analysis of Ajdukiewicz’s concept of language is one of her most interesting achievements in the domain of philosophy of language. This concept, called by Da˛mbska ‘the immanent concept of language’, is the basis of Ajdukiewicz’s well-known radical conventionalism. Ludwik Fleck and His 'Thought Collectives' 11–14 April 2019 Program Venue: Center for Urban History of East Central Europe The workshop Ludwik Fleck and His 'Thought Collectives' aims at bringing together a person and the city/places/spaces, Ludwik Fleck (1896-1961) and Lviv where he was born, studied, worked, debated, contemplated, and wrote his philosophical and medical texts. It is focusing on the philosophic legacy of Fleck and on the historical context that generated his ideas. Workshop participants explore in details the social landscape of the interwar Lviv where different ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups co-existed and co-created; where various art communities and scientific collectives worked together. They trace changes and adaptations of his legacy in various disciplines and geographies. This scientific meeting will actualize the legacy of Ludwik Fleck, and open opportunities for its further application in the academic and extra-academic contexts. They were introduced on December 7, 1920, by Moses Schönfinkel. This is an exploration of the personal story and intellectual context of Moses Schönfinkel, including extensive new research based on primary sources. December 7, 1920 On Tuesday, December 7, 1920, the Göttingen Mathematics Society held its regular weekly meeting—at which a 32-year-old local mathematician named Moses Schönfinkel with no known previous mathematical publications gave a talk entitled “Elemente der Logik” (“Elements of Logic”). But we now realize that that talk gave the first complete formalism for what is probably the single most important idea of this past century: the idea of universal computation. Sixteen years later would come Turing machines (and lambda calculus). But in 1920 Moses Schönfinkel presented what he called “building blocks of logic”—or what we now call “combinators”—and then proceeded to show that by appropriately combining them one could effectively define any function, or, in modern terms, that they could be used to do universal computation. -

Pitt (ABSTRACT) This thesis examines the rhetorical, analytical and critical efficacy of reflexivity and sociological theory as means for reconciling the normative and descriptive functions of the rhetoric of science. In attempting to define a separate research domain within Science Studies, rhetoric of science has borrowed Strong Program and constructivist principles and descriptions of scientific practice from the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge (SSK) as a basis for analyzing scientific discourse. While epistemological claims in the social sciences have been considered inherently self-referential and subject to reflexive analysis and critique, rhetoricians have generally taken these claims on face value and applied them to a treatment of scientific practice. Accordingly, rhetoricians have maintained a natural ontological attitude to sociological theories and descriptions supporting an understanding of scientific discourse as implicitly rhetorical. Recently, however, the concept of "rhetoric" in rhetoric of science has come under scrutiny. This thesis will connect arguments involving the relation of the "irreducibly social" nature of science, to a concept of scientific discourse as rhetorical "without remainder,” to the philosophical commitments of reflexive analysis. -

Conversely, fundamentally new facts can be discovered only through new thinking. (Fleck, 1981: 50–51; translated by Fred Bradley and Thaddeus J. Trenn). Introduction Serbian archaeology offers fertile ground in which to apply Fleck’s con- cepts of thought-collectives and thought-style.1 To this end, this chapter seeks to delve into Fleck’s theories on knowledge production to study how they function in practice in the history of archaeology, as based on empirical data consisting of various texts and citation relations that are used to track a particular thought-collective in a clearer, more visual manner. In doing this, a further aim of this chapter is to introduce new theoretical tools for the history of ideas as well as how they may be implemented as inherent to specific methodological strategies. Kuhn’s concept of a paradigm is limited in its applications since its broad expanse proves too unwieldy to apply to all aspects of a localised phenomenon. Paradigm shift is an appropriate term to describe significant changes that encompass totalities, but not for analysing the specifics of one non-generalised change (Kuhn, 1970). As a matter of consequence, in order to take an initial step into researching the history of localised ideas (such as the history of archaeology), it is necessary to find an approach adequate to understanding the sociology of knowl- edge production and archaeological epistemology. -
On the Search for Sources of Good and Evil in the Lvov-Warsaw School of Philosophy
Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe), 2019, 9 (1–2), 37–45 DOI:10.2478/ebce-2019-0006 On the search for sources of good and evil in the Lvov-Warsaw School of Philosophy Stefan Konstańczak1 Abstract In this article, the author attempts to identify the sources of good and evil as undertaken by the Lvov-Warsaw School of Philosophy (LWSP) founded by Kazimierz Twardowski. Such attempts were undertaken by both Twardowski himself and his closest students and associates; Władysław Witwicki, Tadeusz Kotarbiński. Tadeusz Czeżowski, and Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz. The best-known approach is Kotarbiński’s independent ethics in which the author refers to Aristotle perceiving such potential in the characteristics of each individual as to distinguish elementary qualities in the form of opposites including opposition to good and evil. According to this approach, man acts in an evil manner because he stops following the natural voice of his own heart and instead implements set proposals provided by external factors. In the opinion of the author, the proposals formulated within the LWSP can form the basis for a rational explanation of the atrocities committed during World War II which modern ethics, being focused on neutral metaethical issues, fails to do. In everyday language ethics deals with good and evil. Nevertheless, philosophers often acknowledge that the indefinability of the concepts used in ethics is a sufficient basis to deny it a scientific status.
