Proverbs 8:22-30

The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first before the beginning of the earth. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth – When he established the heavens, I was there when he drew a circle in the face of the deep when he marked out the foundations of the earth then I was beside him like a master worker, an artisan, I was daily his delight.

Dear Friends,

Robert Lax and Thomas Merton, dear friends, treasured and understood circles – and circuses.

The tents for our anniversary celebration have barely been taken down and here we are tonight lighting up the Premier Banquet Center like a great circus tent for Auction 2015! The above quote from Proverbs is for me especially celebratory. Mt. Irenaeus is a lot like a cosmic circus and we are blessed to continue to be beside the Master Worker as artisans with one another and daily his delight!

When we think of the years we might think of eons – that take us beyond time into the wholeness and fullness of God's creative activity and celebrations in family life in our time tonight. God “drew a circle” and circles us up tonight like a circus.

We welcome and celebrate another great Mountain Auction! As you and I know, you have been joining us over the years… if you have not joined us before, 1,000 welcomes to you! We gather from near and far, but most of us from right here in the area, to create a feeling of family and community as we benefit Mt. Irenaeus and “bring the circus to town!”

Father Lou uses a phrase that comes to mind as I write this letter now, “it is all a flow.” We extend a welcome to you and invite you to enter the flow… “the fountain” of Mountain life, the circle of love and life that has been given to us “before the world began.” Enjoy yourselves and help us out as much as you can by appreciating what we have here and considering it a treasure you will take home or give to someone else.

Our life at the Mountain and here is truly a treasure, God-given, and we celebrate it this way as we delight in the first moments of Creation and these moments tonight as we create this time with one another.

Our evening begins with our festive celebration of the Eucharist in the midst of everything! You may know and remember that “Eucharist” in Greek means “to give thanks” or “thanksgiving.” We are not waiting until later in November, we give thanks and praise for you and especially tonight for our exceptional Auction Committee that has come together now for months to form and shape this celebration, to create this circus of love and generosity for all of us.

Possibly you have been part of a gift gathering party and so we thank you for that as well; for your interest and commitment to Mountain life, as Br. Joe says, “for the Mountain is not only on the Mountain.” So now let us settle in and move up and around, let us rejoice in life as it is given to us and as we begin to make our own offerings for the Mountain.

Now, here tonight, and with one another, let us remember all those who are wandering and not feeling included in circles, the refugees and others who are distant and distraught on the face of our earth. May we hold them, as we find ourselves to be, as God’s own “daily delight.”

Blessings and enjoy the evening.

“As happens when we fall in love with someone, whenever Francis would gaze at the sun, the moon or the smallest of animals, he burst into song, drawing all creatures into his praise.” - Pope Francis, “Laudato Si’”

Much love and God's peace,

Dan Riley, ofm For the Mountain Family

What is Mt. Irenaeus?

Mt. Irenaeus is a not-for-profit Franciscan mountain retreat located in the scenic Enchanted Mountains of southwestern State, outside West Clarksville, N.Y. “The Mountain” is celebrating our 30th anniversary! This special place had its beginnings when a few members of the St. Bonaventure University community began a search for a place where members of the community could get away for a weekend of rest and reflection. In June 1982, the not-for-profit Franciscan Mountain Retreat Inc. was formed to pursue this vision. During the summers of 1983 and 1984, Collins Hall, a University-owned building on Union Street in Allegany, served as the Mountain’s first home. In November 1984, the searchers found the current site, and more than 200 acres of land outside West Clarksville was purchased. Construction of the first cabin, named Sunrise, began in summer 1985. Cabins were added in 1987 and 1988, the same year ground was broken for Holy Peace Chapel, which was dedicated in April 1990. Also in 1990, Holy Peace Friary, a large community house with space for gathering, for prayer and meals, was completed to house the friars and their guests. Today the Mountain’s 304 acres include, in addition to Holy Peace Chapel and Friary, several cabins and five miles of trails. This spectacularly beautiful and peaceful setting provides an opportunity for serenity and prayerful reflection to guests from near and far. Morning and evening prayer services, the celebration of the Eucharist, and time for solitude and sharing are all part of daily life at the Mountain. The Franciscan Friars and their friends in this ministry of peace and prayer welcome people of any tradition who seek to experience the abiding presence of God in their daily lives.
